Essley took the top prize in Tuesday’s “Dateline Awards” competition of the DC chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The reporter was awarded the Robert D.G.
Write About D.C. Newlyweds for The Nest

“Happily ever after” is a phrase that most of us have written off as cliché, unrealistic and, most importantly, confined to the realms of Disney movies. However, the editors at The Nest believe that wedded bliss can indeed exist, and they’ve accumulated plenty of tips for new spouses into a print and digital magazine, book series and more.

New online pieces are published five times a day, so there’s a constant need for content. The topical areas are the same as the mag — food, décor, recipes, relationships, health, real estate — with more space to delve more deeply into each subject area. That’s a win for freelancers, who now have even more opportunities to help Nest readers reach the elusive happily ever after.

For pitching etiquette and editors’ contact info, read How To Pitch: The Nest.

Fishbowl5 With FP CEO David Rothkopf

This week Susan Glasser, Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Policy Magazine for the past three years, dropped a bombshell on her staff and announced that she was leaving the publication for Politico, where she will head up a longform magazine-style writing department that will reportedly cost Publisher Robert Allbritton a good chunk of change. In recent weeks, FP has lost top writers like Josh Rogin to The Daily Beast and Kevin Baron to Atlantic‘s new Defense One. What’s more, the mag recently parted ways (amicably, we’re told) with Ed Diller, the publisher, as did the sales rep he brought over from the WSJ.

An FP source explained to FishbowlDC, “Ed was based on the West Coast, the other rep in NYC, and they were both extremely talented and good at their jobs. It just made sense for FP to redouble its efforts at its headquarters here in DC, and so that’s what happened. It certainly isn’t a reflection on their abilities and they both left the company on good terms.”

Sources tell us Rogin and Baron also left on good terms. “Baron is an excellent reporter – he was well-liked by his colleagues, he broke stories, worked his ass off, and did everything he was supposed to do. He may be able to provide more context regarding his departure. Rogin left to take the job at The Daily Beast. It was just a really good opportunity for him, and he’d done a lot here at FP.”

So how does FP CEO David Rothkopf feel about all the changes? Well, we asked him. And it turns out he had a hell of a lot to say.

It can be tough when an Editor-in-Chief leaves or it can be a bright spot, a sense of relief. What was your gut reaction when Susan Glasser told you she was leaving FP for Politico? I have a lot of respect for Susan and all she has accomplished not only at FP but also at the Washington Post. Her contributions to Foreign Policy—bringing it into the Internet Age, if you will—were enormous. But there are also creative cycles within organizations. Sometimes it can be helpful to hit the reset button, reevaluate and embark on the next period of change. This is a 44-year-old company that has gone through a number of such cycles and emerged stronger from each. That is what our intention is now. We have some big changes on the horizon—expanding coverage, new products, deepening the relationship with our readers in important ways—and so this can certainly be seen as a win-win moment. Good for Susan. And the beginning of new, great things for the FP community.

At least some of the staff appeared to be surprised by the news. Were they not given warning about it? This was handled just as it would be in any organization. Susan and I discussed for a couple of weeks. When we decided on what was going to happen we developed a plan to coordinate the messages from FP and Politico to ensure that this was seen as what it was, an amicable change that would begin important new eras at both publications. We then told top staff and made sure everyone in the organization was informed before the news broke publicly. We had a team meeting on Monday and the mood was just what you would hope for—appreciation for Susan and enthusiasm about the great opportunities that lie ahead.

Who will replace Glasser? Does Rothkopf know yet?

Get Your Kid Stories Published in Parents

The tagline of “Healthy kids, happy families” encompasses both Parents‘ content and attitude. The magazine is primarily a service magazine, and editors deliver what readers initially come to the magazine for: information about children’s health, safety, nutrition, discipline and development. However, editors also want to help readers enjoy family life (not escape it), delivering positive stories about keeping a marriage happy and celebrating the holidays.

Parents has “a nice balance between the content related to children and content related to being a parent,” said deputy editor Diane Debrovner. And, lucky for writers, almost every section of this service pub is open to freelance pitches, and there are numerous ways for newbies to break into the book.

Write for Working Mother, Land $1 Per Word (and Up!)

Unlike most parenting magazines, Working Mother focuses on moms instead of kids. The service mag aims to help moms throughout a busy work day, and there are plenty of opportunities for freelancers to break in. The feature well is especially friendly, and a well tailored pitch could land your byline in one of the columns, too.

“Our readers are striving to find work-life satisfaction. They’re a driven bunch who are juggling not only work and children, but often aging parents, pets, you name it,” said editorial director Jennifer Owens. “They’re also highly social, communicating with us directly through LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram.”

Pitch Timely D.C. Stories to JET

Launched back in 1951, JET has been the authority on news in the black community for decades. With a loyal readership of over 7 million, freelancers with the right pitch will get prime real estate for their bylines.

Since the pub is largely news based, editors are looking for local stories from stringers who live in different parts of the country and can report on influential, headline-making topics in their own areas. They want to hear about news-making trends, like the outbreak of bigotry among fans at high school sporting events. So if you spot a breaking topic, pitch it with a vision for what the story will look like. “I’m always on the lookout for new trends at both the regional and national level,” said editor-in-chief Mitzi Miller.

Incest Desk: In the Acceptable Sense of the Word

TNR has story today with a fun, incestuous twist to it. It’s by Reid Cherlin, a former flack to Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), who knew Weiner in only the ways a staffer or maybe a reporter could in the back halls of Congress. He’s also a former White House aide. And now, crossing boundaries and borders, he’s a writer unraveling his thoughts on Weiner and why he is no longer the unpalatable “skeez” of a politician he once was.

His description of him is dead on: “In the flesh, he is all beak and sharp angles, the narrowness of his cheekbones and shoulders seeming to knife through his surroundings.”

In short, Cherlin not only feels for Weiner, but he’s now rooting for him. He says he’s over Weiner’s “dickish” personality. “Even if we’re forced to relive those episodes in vivid, cotton-bulging detail—as no doubt we will be—the major takeaway for me is what I already knew: The guy’s kind of a dirtbag,” he writes. continued…

Except “profiled” is usually a word reserved for people who let you in and see at least some of what makes them tick. Baron won’t say what makes him tick. He’ll hardly say anything. It’s even a wonder he agreed to have a story written about him. “Baron is almost a kind of D.C. antimatter,” Frates writes. “He does not talk about himself. He does not discuss much of himself, his personal life or, more important, how he runs The Post…” But what readers do learn about Baron is that he’s a middle-of-the-road, no frills “newsman” in every traditional sense of the word. “Human Ritalin,” as Frates describes it.

“Morning Joe” is “what’s wrong” with MSNBC?– Salon‘s Alex Pareene has a thing for “Morning Joe.” Namely, he hates it. He regularly calls the show’s main host Joe Scarborough a hack, but then again he has an annual hack list in which lots of journalists are hacks. He picks up on any controversial remark. There’s nothing discernibly nice that Pareene has ever written about the show. That pattern continued Monday when Pareene wrote that the reason for MSNBC’s recent decline in overall ratings can be encapsulated in “Morning Joe.” “Every other TV morning show is mostly fluff and weather,” Pareene writes. “’Morning Joe,’” instead of entertainment news updates, has a former member of Congress wave a newspaper at Mark Halperin for a while. MSNBC’s target audience may just be much less interested in listening to people talk about politics in spring 2013 than they were during an election year.”

Former CBS White House Correspondent was once lifted into the air by Shaq– In a column for The Atlantic, co-host of CBS’s “This Morning” Norah O’Donnell details her media diet.
President Obama’s Senior Prom Date

Today TIME magazine brings us President Obama‘s senior prom date. No doubt Obama’s cursing his old classmate for releasing these priceless pictures. The year: 1979. Seems he may have had a thing for his buddy’s date, whom he called “foxy” in a yearbook message.

Washingtonian Mom Comes to Town

Washington mommy bloggers watch out, there may soon be a new sheriff in town.

Washington Business Journal is reporting that Washingtonian‘s parent company, Washingtonian Media, is adding a new magazine for area moms. The straightforward name — Washingtonian Mom — will have Washingtonian‘s fashion editor Kate Bennett at the helm.

The new mag will be published quarterly.

Asked what the feel of the new publication will be, Bennett explained to FishbowlDC, “I think we just saw a need in the region for a slightly higher-end publication that speaks directly to moms who are savvy and insightful. The content will run the gamut from fashion and beauty, to lifestyle, health and wellness, food, newest/latest/greatest places to go and things to do. We’ll also include profiles of local moms, thoughtful first-person essays and home and living. We’ve been thrilled with the positive feedback we’ve received since we started talking about this new publication.”

As for the look, it’ll be “slightly oversized, thicker paper, more in line with our Washingtonian Bride & Groom publication,” said Bennett. “We’re working with the award-winning firm Design Army on the overall design of the premiere issue.”

Bring the D.C. Music Scene to The FADER

The FADER prides itself on being first on the scene when it comes to up-and-coming artists and music trends. Among the musicians who got their first mag covers at The FADER include Kanye West, MIA, The Strokes, Drake, Bon Iver, Frank Ocean and more. The magazine also holds the distinction of being the first publication to be distributed as a PDF through iTunes.

“We’re always interested in hearing more ideas from outside of our immediate field of vision. If you live outside of New York City and something unusual is happening local to you, that is what’s exciting,” said editor-in-chief Matthew Schnipper. “We’re interested in what we wouldn’t know about otherwise.”

Land $1.50 a Word (and Up) at Wired

Over 70 percent of Wired is freelance written, and, once you’ve scored a byline, you’re well on your way to landing more assignments. Senior editor Sarah Fallon urges writers to think of Wired‘s coverage as a continuum: “Science leads to technologies. Technologies spawn businesses and whole industries. Businesses flourish and end up influencing and changing culture,” she said.

Based in San Francisco, Wired has a laid-back but focused West Coast feel and a sensibility that welcomes everyone from the worldly generalist to the Vine junkie. There’s plenty of room for freelancers, too, so long as you’re pitching fresh meat. “We want to cover stories that you wouldn’t find in any other magazine,” Fallon explained. “If you’re going to pitch something mainstream, make sure you have a unique angle.”

Mika Brzezinksi Shows Boob Shot on ‘Morning Joe’

As they showcased the upcoming issue of GQ on this morning’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, Co-host Mika Brzezinski wondered about all the boobage in the magazine. We’re talking full-on breast shots that she flashed for the TV screen.

The story with the naked breasts concerned five-day cruises with Kid Rock.

The hosts were appropriately disgusted and outraged and quickly crumpled the magazine so the boobs were hidden. But not before Brzezinski flashed viewers with this bold shot. Those are Joe Scarborough‘s fingers at the top crease of the magazine.

One question. If nudity isn’t allowed on national cable TV, are pictures of naked breasts acceptable?

See the other shots and chyron that helped hide the picture of the guest holding up the nudy feature. continued…

Kim Jong Il’s Sushi Chef Talks to GQ

Although former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il golfed 38 under par, turns out he wasn’t so good at racing jet skis. But he didn’t mind going to the sauna. Naked. With his chef.

Hmmm….

In a story appearing in GQ next week, the former sushi chef and confidant to the Shining Star of Paektu Mountain, Kenji Fujimoto, dishes on what life was like with “Shogun-sama,” as Fujimoto called him.

Fujimoto says the “Dear Leader” took a particular liking to him. The man of a million titles – Ever-Triumphant General, Highest Incarnation of the Revolutionary Comradely Love — regularly demanded affection from Fujimoto.

“Every time Shogun-sama said to me, Do you like me? I answered, Of course, I like you so much. I was thinking about making a joke—I don’t like you, I despise you. I wanted to say that as a joke, but I had no courage. Shogun-sama said, If you like me, why don’t you kiss me on the cheek? I don’t remember h ow many times I kissed him. A hundred times? A hundred kisses. We would go to the sauna together, naked. Shogun-sama said, Oh, you have a good body, a masculine body. I said, I’m good at sports. It’s not too much to say I was a good playmate for Kim Jong-il. And every time he asked me to kiss his face, he always said to me, If you betray me, you will… Then he would go silent and make a gesture of a knife going into my stomach.”

As a test of loyalty, Jong Il once challenged Fujimoto to a jet ski race. The sushi chef and nanny to Jong Il’s son, Kim Jong Un, thought about purposely losing the race, but since the Great Sun of Life had told him to do his best, he kept the lead.

Though the average North Korean would have been executed for embarrassing Jong Il, Fujimoto said he spared him (probably because of his “good body”) and simply told him, “you won.”

Fujimoto also gives himself credit for Jong Un’s love of the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls. More from the piece… continued…
