Highlights from the 9.14.14 Sunday Shows

sunday-shows_304Secretary of State John Kerry on CBS’s “Face the Nation” : “This is a strategy coming together as the coalition comes together and the countries declare what they are prepared to do. But I want it to be absolutely clear out of this discussion we’re having that every single aspect of the president’s strategy, and what is needed to be done in order to accomplish our goal, has been offered by one country or multiple countries and all bases are covered.”

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough on ABC’s “This Week” : “We will be very candid with the American people, as the president has been. We will work very closely and consult with Congress on this effort. And we believe that we have the right strategy that the president laid out for the country on Wednesday night, to make sure that we degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL.” Read more

Highlights from the 9.7.14 Sunday Shows

sunday-shows_304Chuck Todd on NBC treatment of the ousted David Gregory on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” with Brian Stelter: “I don’t know everything that happened. I was more out of the loop than I think some people would like to believe. I know — I’ve learned in my seven years now in the television business: this is hard. This is a tough business.”

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) on ABC’s “This Week” : “ISIS, at this point, is primarily focused on Iraq and Syria. I think the real threat from ISIS is the foreign fighters from the United States and other western countries that have gone to Syria to fight with them who then may come back. But they pose a threat more as lone wolves than as sort of any sort of organized plot. There’s no evidence at this point that ISIS is plotting and planning in the way that bin Laden was doing for 9/11.” Read more

Highlights from the 8.24.14 Sunday Shows

sunday-shows_304Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO) on ABC’s “This Week” : “Tomorrow we will bury Michael Brown and I think this past week with the presence of Attorney General Holder, he brought a calming force here to St. Louis to Ferguson and it kind of reinforced people’s trust that at least on one track there will be an above board, thorough investigation on the part of the federal government, especially with the FBI here as well as the U.S. Department of Justice.”

Rep. Clay on CBS’s “Face the Nation” : “I am not really concerned about the funeral reigniting the tensions. I guess what I am most concerned about, and I made a promise to Michael Brown’s parents that I would do everything to bring all of the resources of the federal government to this investigation so that it is transparent, so that it is a viable investigation and we get to the truth. Now, I am more concerned that if we do not get to the truth and get to what actually happened and bring justice to this situation, then there is going to be a problem in the streets.” Read more

Quotes by John Kerry on 7.20.14 Sunday Shows

Screen Shot 2014-07-21 at 09.44.05Secretary of State John Kerry on CBS’s “Face the Nation” : “What we have is a lot of evidence that points in the direction that raises very, very serious questions, including the fact that a few weeks ago, we have 150-vehicle convoy coming from Russia, going into the east of Ukraine with tanks, artillery, multiple rocket launchers, armored personnel carriers, turned over to the separatists.”

Secretary of State John Kerry on ABC’s “This Week” : “Russia — there are — I mean some of the separatist leaders, George, are Russian.  Russia has armed the separatists.  Russia has supported the separatists.  Russia has trained the separatists.  Russia continues to refuse to call publicly for the separatists to engage in behavior that would lend itself to a resolution of this issue.”

Secretary of State John Kerry on NBC’s “Meet the Press” : “There’s a story today confirming that. But we have not, within the administration, made a determination. But it’s pretty clear, when, you know, there’s a build-up of extraordinary circumstantial evidence. You know, I’m a former prosecutor. I’ve tried cases on circumstantial evidence. It’s powerful here. But even more importantly, we picked up the imagery of this launch. We know the trajectory. We know where it came from. We know the timing. And it was exactly at the time that this aircraft disappeared from the radar. We also know, from voice identification, that the separatists were bragging about shooting it down afterwards.”

Secretary of State John Kerry on CNN’s “State of the Union” : “And on Thursday of the event, we know that, within hours of this event, this particular system passed through two towns right in the vicinity of the shoot-down. We know, because we observed it by imagery, that, at the moment of the shoot-down, we detected a launch from that area, and our trajectory shows that it went to the aircraft.”

Secretary of State John Kerry on “Fox News Sunday” : “Drunken separatists have been piling bodies into trucks and removing them from the site.  We only had 75 minutes of access to the site on Friday.  Three hours of access yesterday.  Despite Mr. Putin and Russia saying they were going to make every effort to make sure there’d be a full and fair investigation, thorough, and the site would be protected.  Because of Russia’s linkage to these separatists, they have a greater ability to exert influence, and we need Russia to become part of the solution, not part of the problem.”

Best Quotes from 7.13.14 Sunday Shows

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,”: “No, I will commit to everything and anything that would provide credible assurances for the international community that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons, because we are not. We don’t see any benefit in Iran developing a nuclear weapon.”

Attorney General Eric Holder said on ABC’s “This Week” : “The immigration laws are being enforced, though we are faced with an extraordinary situation where thousands of people, young people especially, are fleeing Central America for economic reasons to get away from really endemic violence in their countries…The president has put together a proposal to Congress asking for almost $4 billion.  We are surging immigration judges to the border to process all of these people.”

On CBS’s “Face the Nation” with Israel Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer : “Hamas is deliberately targeting our civilians; they want to keep as many civilians in Israel as possible.  Thankfully, we have an iron dome to protect our civilians, but as the Prime Minister said, they’re actually using their civilians as human shields…They play missile barriers next to mosques, schools, hospitals, it makes it very difficult for our military to right this war in a surgical way, but we’ll do it and we’ll continue to uphold the highest standards.” Read more

Quote of the Day

Jimmy Carter to CNN’s Erin Burnett on Oliver North’s recent comments that Obama is “Jimmy Carter on steroids:

I don’t pay any attention to Oliver North and I’m kind of sorry to hear you quote him. You know, he was a criminal during the Iranian Contra crisis and was convicted of betraying the best interest of our country. And of course he is famous now because he is a constant critic of the democratic party and the democrats. But I don’t worry about that. As of a matter of fact, I don’t think anyone could have moved more strongly against the Soviet Union when they went into Afghanistan than I did.

Quote of the Day

Tina Brown on Bloomberg TV about Newsweek launching their new print edition today with a cover story on Bitcoin inventor (we think?) Satoshi Nakamoto:

I’m so glad I’m not the editor. But actually, I’m very supportive of their desire to get a print product out. I actually always thought there should have been a print component to the digital Newsweek. A small print component. But it is very hard. The ship has sailed. It really is a hard thing to bring it back. However, I do wish them well because I want every magazine that is out there to survive.

Quote of the Day: Greenwald Coming Back to US

GlennGreenwaldIn an interview with Huff Post Live’s Alyona Minkovski today, Glenn Greenwald swore that he would come back to the United States, Polk Award in hand, whether or not he faced legal challenges over his role in the NSA leak stories:

“I’m going to force the issue just on principle, and I think coming back for a ceremony like the Polk Award or other forms of journalistic awards would be a really good symbolic test. We’re still figuring out exactly how we’re going to do it and when, but there’s no question we’re going to come back to the US and test the First Amendment.”
