Sightings…

SPOTTED: The Mark Plotkin Edition

D.C. had a big college basketball weekend. While Georgetown destroyed Syracuse, George Washington University faced a big game, themselves with their final home game against the Dayton Flyers. After the game went into overtime, GW scored with a thunderous dunk, with less than 2 seconds remaining, that won the game.

As the happy crowd streamed out of the arena, our spy snapped a pic of former WTOP political commentator, Mark Plotkin. You may remember that Plotkin was canned from the station for his repeated angry outbursts.

Upon first viewing, we weren’t sure if it was actually Plotkin, since the subject in the photo seems to have less hair. Then again, the history of Plotkin’s rage issues may explain the balding.

‘Real Housewives’ Tamra Barney Poses With Ugly Doggie at D.C. Liquor Store

Tamra Barney, cast member of “The Real Housewives of OC,” flew into D.C. last week to promote Cuca Fresca rum. We’re not avid watchers, but we’ve come to understand her reputation among viewers is that she’s a crazy you-know-what.

That wasn’t the case Friday at 1 West liquor store in Dupont Circle, where she signed bottles for fans.

She was nice enough, even though she was placed in a poorly-lit basement to pose for pictures with women who take her show too seriously (“Are you two still fighting?!” one enthusiastic fan, eyes ablaze, asked Barney). She even posed for the most awkward photo when one woman walked in with quite possibly the ugliest dog Dupont has ever seen… Read more

Spotted: WMAL’s Brian Wilson at Bob Evans

Sighting: Morning man and co-host of  105.9 FM/630AM WMAL’s “Mornings on the Mall,” Brian Wilson. He was seen eating breakfast this morning at a Germantown, Md. location of Bob Evans. Our spy didn’t catch his order, but reported that he spent a good chunk of time tapping away at his iPhone with the sound ON. Someone should tell Wilson to keep that phone on vibrate in the middle of a restaurant. The loud noises didn’t deter someone from snapping this photo of him reading on his phone.

Our spy also remarked that Wilson was, “shockingly tall.” It appears that he is wearing a “Sun Records” baseball cap, which earns him high marks in our book.

CNN’s McPike On Metro Beside Gaseous Baby

Spotted on Metro’s green line in the direction of Greenbelt Saturday night: Erin McPike, formerly of RealClearPolitics, now with CNN.

Though covered in a bubbly jacket, McPike looked dressed to impress at 10:15 p.m. She exited at the U St. stop, a night scene with lots of bars, restaurants and live bands.

While on the train, McPike tapped away on her phone. All the while, the woman to McPike’s right repeatedly asked a baby in a stroller whether he had “passed gas.” The baby, between 1 and 2 years old, nodded his head “yes” each time.

NBC’s Willie Geist Keeps It Real, Uses Subway

He’s still Willie from the block. NBC Today‘s Willie Geist has settled into his new cushy gig as co-host of the show’s 9 a.m. but the promotion apparently hasn’t gone to his head.

Many hosts and anchors in the network TV business opt for a car service to and from work. We’re told, however, Geist was spotted this morning at 10:30 a.m. riding the 1 train in New York City somewhere by 50th St. He was seen toting an iPhone and an unidentified book.

Geist on the dirty subway system. Just like a regular Joe.

We’re happy to see that Geist hasn’t forgotten the little people.

Spotted: MSNBC’s Richard Wolffe at Pennsylvania Ski Resort

The suits at NBC will be proud to learn that MSNBC.com VP and Executive Director Richard Wolffe never leaves his work far behind. He was spotted, not on the slopes, but typing away on his laptop at the Whitetail Ski Resort Starbucks in the mountains of Pennsylvania. He was seated at a table with an unidentified male.

Whitetail Resort, located in Mercersburg, Pa., offers everything from skiing, snowboarding and tubing to free snowcones for kids on Sundays, Adventure Camp and fly fishing and golf in warmer weather.

We reached out to Wolffe just in case he has a comment. UPDATE: He replied, “It’s true, I was. I love Whitetail. The skiing instructors there are the best. For someone who grew up in a country where it rains 95 percent of the year, I need all the instructor help I can get. Sadly this year I have too much work. But next year I’ll be back on the slopes.” Wolffe grew up in Birmingham, England.

Fear and Loathing in Tunnicliff’s Tavern

We’ve had our issues with WaPo’s Gene Weingarten in the past. While Gene is capable of brilliant writing, his weekly column has been as stale as the beer spilled on a barroom floor. Each week, he churns out recycled, hackneyed garbage that isn’t funny or interesting. So, we take a look at his ramblings and analyze them in our weekly feature, “What’s Weingarten Writing?”

After months of covering Gene, I felt like I knew the man. But, I’d never actually had to come face to face with the legend until Thursday evening. Read more

Spotted: Sec. of Labor Shuts Down Neighborhood for Hair Apppointment

Earlier today around noon Sec. of Labor Hilda Solis was spotted walking out of Michael Anthony Salon at Eastern Market. When asked if her hairdo looked good, our spy replied, “Hell yeah, girl!” Traffic in the neighborhood was blocked off.  “Her hair looked normal.  Nothing major,” the tipster noted. “Probably just a blowout.”

A blowout at the salon costs between $42 and $55. A shampoo set is $50.

Spotted: Politico Head Honchos at Four Seasons

This morning at approximately 9:30 we spotted Politico‘s Editor-in-Chief John Harris (a rather distant, unfriendly bloke in person), reporter Alexander Burns and Mike Allen in the luxurious Four Seasons dining room. They were all dressed meticulously in suits and ties. Allen scampered up the stairs after Burns and Harris, so unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to engage him in light banter. Other publication communications executives such as Beth Lester were spotted in the dining room. They were warm and smiled. When asked, Burns, who would only engage in friendly chatter with us when Harris wasn’t around, said they were there to meet with “Embassy” personnel. Whatever that means.

(Pssst…anyone know what they were really doing there? Write us at fishbowldc@mediabistro.com or Betsy@mediabistro.com.)

Whose Shoes: Revealed

Yesterday we held one of our famed “Whose Shoes” contests for two female media types. The photograph was taken by ABC7′s Rebecca Cooper at a recent district sale. The shoes in question belong to BrandLink’s Barbara Martin (owner of the sandals) and Poshbrood travel blogger Elizabeth Thorp (owner of the tiger print low heels).

Several readers guessed correctly, but some thought the sandals belonged to Washingtonian‘s Kate Bennett.

Now for details on the shoes.

Barbara’s sandals: “Shoes are Pucci.  I think they were $300?  I got them at the Gilt Warehouse Sale.”

Elizabeth’s Tiger print heels: “My shoes are also from GILT can you believe it? Got them online 2 years ago and they are the Kenneth Cole G series pumps (looks like a pump feels like a sneaker kind of thing…)  I believe I got them for $250? Typically they’re around $400 or $500.”
