WaPo Names Managing Editor

WaPo announced today that Emilio Garcia-Ruiz has been named managing editor. According to a release, he will be responsible for digital initiatives and operations, video, the presentation departments of photo, graphics, and design, and the multiplatform editing desk.

He was previously WaPo‘s digital strategy editor. He began working for WaPo in 1987 as a night copy editor in Sports. He left in 1990 and spent 11 years at the Orange County Register, LAT and St. Paul Pioneer Press. He returned to WaPo in 2001 as assistant sports editor.

“As editor for strategic projects for the past two and a half years, Emilio has been immersed in our digital efforts across all platforms,” said Marty Baron, Executive Editor, in a long, meandering, boring quote. “He was instrumental in bringing the embedded developer team to the newsroom, a move that helped The Post emerge as an industry leader in innovation, releasing more than a dozen new digital products in the past year. He also brings to this position deep and impressive experience as a journalist and a newsroom leader, a background that has allowed him to work intimately with photography, design, graphics, and the full range of editors and reporters. ”

Afternoon Shocker: Politico’s Jonathan Martin Leaves the Womb

Politico is so funny when they lose someone they actually like. In this case, it’s Jonathan Martin, their Senior Political Reporter and one of the publication’s original hires, who’s off to the New York Times. They issue a gynormous memo and Editor-in-Chief John Harris explains why the move is as good for them as it is for the other publication. He says things like this:

“Jonathan told us today that he is leaving home to take a big and challenging job as national political correspondent with the New York Times.” …From the POLITICO perspective, this is a day less for regret than excitement. We have an opportunity—indeed, from both Robert Allbritton and Fred Ryan we have an unambiguous order—to use this moment as a springboard.”

Leaving home? Anyhow, a colleague cracked, “Hoo boy… Can’t wait till the Times discovers his temper and penchant for speaking down to colleagues.”

White House Correspondent Gets Tall Order

House and Senate Leadership Editor and White House Correspondent?

A tall order, but this is what CQ Roll Call is doing with White House Correspondent Steven Dennis. They’re promoting him to Leadership Editor and making him perform his regular White House duties.

Does he plan on sleeping?

Dennis will report to Deputy Editor Emily Pierce. He started at CQ eight years ago and moved over to Roll Call in 2007. In 2011 he became a Senate reporter and later that year was promoted to White House Correspondent.

“Roll Call has always been known for its incisive coverage of congressional leadership, and I am thrilled to take on this new challenge leading our team while continuing to cover the White House,” Dennis said in a release.

Atlantic’s Defense One Names Exec. Editor

Foreign Policy‘s Kevin Baron is headed to Atlantic Media where he’ll be Executive Editor of Defense One, a new brand set to launch this summer.

“Kevin Baron is a rising star in defense media, and we are thrilled to have him leading Defense One,” said Tim Hartman, president of Government Executive Media Group, the division of Atlantic Media responsible for launching Defense One. “Kevin’s innovative digital approach, deep expertise, and pursuit of journalistic excellence make him a perfect fit to lead Defense One’s editorial team.”

Baron is a two-time George Polk Award winner. At Foreign Policy he was a national security reporter and authored the E-Ring blog, covering the Pentagon, defense and national security.

CNN Hires New Religion Editor

Last week Daniel Burke joined CNN as co-editor of the site’s Belief Blog. He comes to CNN from Religion News Service, where for the past seven years he covered everything from Amish funerals to the Zen of Steve Jobs. His work has appeared in WaPo, USA Today and NYT, and he has been recognized by the American Academy of Religion and the Religion Newswriters Association. He’s based out of the network’s DC bureau and reports to Meredith Artley, VP and managing editor of CNN Digital.

Kiplinger Snags HuffPost Travel Editor

Kiplinger has hired Rebecca Dolan away from HuffPost, where she was Associate Editor of HuffPost Travel. She will be Kiplinger‘s Community Editor. According to a release, Dolan will perform all the normal social media duties as well as include regular web chats featuring personal finance experts.”

In her past…Previous stints include AOL Travel, AOL City’s Best, Jacksonville Magazine in Jacksonville, Florida, and Medill News Service. A graduate of William and Mary with a M.S. in Journalism from Medill at Northwestern, Dolan has written about health and science, environment and energy, performing arts and travel.

Barbara Walters Wants to Sit on ‘Sunny Field’

ABC Host of “The View” Barbara Walters is scheduled to announce on this morning’s program that she will retire next summer. She will remain executive producer of the show she created in 1997.

“I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain,” she said in a release from the network. “I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women—and okay, some men too—who will be taking my place.”

Washington Examiner Gossip Columnist Begins Transition

Nearly two months ago Washington Examiner “Yeas and Nays” gossip columnist Nikki Schwab was notified that as part of the publication’s restructuring, she would be one of many staffers let go. We hear she has until early June at the Examiner, but she’s already on the move.

At the start of May, Schwab began posting at The Daily Download, the web media site run by Lauren Ashburn and publicized by Howard Kurtz. Schwab has written four posts to-date on topics like new YouTube and LinkedIn features and a smartphone application that allows users to mimic Michelle Obama‘s fashion.

Schwab is with Daily Download on a freelance basis. She will also be freelancing for Washington Life. “Yes, just doing some freelance, trying to figure out what’s next for me,” she told FishbowlDC.

Roll Call Reporters Get New Beats

Today’s memo from Roll Call Editor David Rapp announces the news of two reporters taking on new assignments. They are Emma Dumain, who is moving from the campus beat to House leadership reporter, and Emily Cahn, who moves from the publication’s Hill Life section to the politics team.

CQ Roll Call’s Drucker to Washington Examiner

CQ Roll Call’s David Drucker is making the leap and leaving for a job as Senior Congressional Correspondent at the Washington Examiner, which will soon be a political online news outlet with a weekly print magazine. It’s no secret the pub leans right and will continue to do so. With CQ Roll Call in the midst of recent buyouts and some layoffs, Drucker is the second CQ Roll Caller this week to jump ship. He did not get laid off, nor did he take a buyout. On Monday, Jonathan Strong announced that he, too, was leaving the publication for National Review.

“David is exactly the kind of journalist we’re recruiting for the new Washington Examiner,” Examiner Editor Stephen Smith wrote to FishbowlDC. “He’s done a lot campaign reporting, he’s covered the workings of Congress, and he’s written extensively about policy — notably immigration and Obamacare.

“He understands where and how all these things intersect. He’s a California native who wrote about state politics and issues for the Los Angeles Daily News, and he has a Californian’s sense of how government policy plays out in the real world.”

Foreign Policy Replaces Josh Rogin

As of Monday, John Hudson will replace Josh Rogin in manning Foreign Policy magazine’s “The Cable” blog, according to a newsroom memo by Editor-in-Chief Susan Glasser.

No doubt he has big shoes to fill.

“[W]e’re sure he’ll have a terrific impact on it, as he has helped boost Passport over the last few months since he joined Foreign Policy after a great run at the Atlantic Wire and the Daily,” assures a memo from Editor-in-Chief Susan Glasser.

It was announced earlier that Rogin would be leaving FP for The Daily Beast to work as a senior correspondent covering politics and national security.

Two Journos Upped at Roll Call

Two editors, Emily Pierce and Shira Toeplitz, have risen within the ranks of Roll Call. Pierce, formerly Senate and White House Editor, will now be Deputy Editor. Pierce has been at Roll Call for a decade. Toeplitz, meanwhile, who has been acting Politics Editor and formerly a political reporter, has been officially named to the position of Politics Editor. She has worked at the publication since 2007.

National Review Gets Strong New Reporter

Jonathan Strong has left Roll Call to join National Review. Strong, who covered House leadership for Roll Call, isn’t taking one of their buyouts, nor was he laid off. Strong previously worked as an investigative journalist for The Daily Caller.

Layoffs Hit CQ Roll Call

In addition to the buyouts of five CQ Roll Call staffers announced Thursday, there have been layoffs of several other employees, FishbowlDC has learned.

A source familiar with the layoffs, who asked to speak on condition of anonymity, could not confirm the number of outgoing staffers but said it was “less than five.” We hear one person shown the door was staff photographer Chris Maddoloni, who won two awards earlier this year from the White House News Photographers Association. Maddolini did not return request for comment.

While the buyout package offered to staffers Thursday is believed to include roughly five months worth of pay (it depends on how long a staffer has been with the company), it is unclear if the laid off employees received any severance deal. Our source says laid off staffers at CQ Roll Call generally do receive something but it depends how long they’ve been with the company.

The layoffs are not related to the buyouts, according to the source. They are part of the long-term strategy CQ Roll Call, a company with about 400 employees, has adopted in shifting its resources from its print product to the digital side.

Update: A separate source, also speaking on condition of anonymity, contests the assertion that the layoffs are not related to the buyouts. This source says “at least one” of the staffers laid off was eligible for the buyout, but did not request it before being shown the door.

Update #2: Another layoff is Todd Kapner from the Advertising Dept., FishbowlDC has learned. A source tells us he did not receive the buyout.

CQ Roll Call Staffers Take Buyouts

Five employees at CQ Roll Call have been given buyouts at the publication, according to a newsroom memo sent out by Editorial Director Susan Benkelman obtained by FishbowlDC.

The employees are: John Bicknell, editor of CQ Weekly; Robert Healy, senior editor; Melinda Nahmias, deputy editor of CQ Weekly; Lauren Whittington, leadership editor; and Randy Wynn, chief news editor.

We hear that part of the buyout is roughly five months-worth of pay.

“We’re going to set a date for an appropriate, official celebration of these employees’ long and wonderful careers, most likely the third week in May, and we’ll make sure everyone is aware of those plans,” Benkelman wrote in the memo. “In the meantime, please wish them well on this next phase of their lives and careers. We’ll also have some snacks and drinks in the newsroom late tomorrow for these employees’ last day. I’ll bring the wine, and the Kleenex.”

FishbowlDC reported Thursday that several staffers had submitted requests for buyouts and that decisions could come by the end of the day. It looks like that panned out.
