Cronkite with a ‘Kansas Twang’

The DC Examiner today profiles PBS’ Jim Lehrer, spending some time talking with him about his bus collection, presidential debates, and the different type of show that Newshour is. As the article begins,”For the Washington cognoscenti, Jim Lehrer is the ultimate anchor: avuncular, steady and calm.”

The McDonalds-loving anchor also has this to say about his toughest interviews:

“The biggest was that first interview with Bill Clinton the day the news came out he had a relationship with a 21-year-old intern. I’ll never forget that. I ended up asking him ‘the’ question. That was a little hairy. The presidential debates – that’s scary stuff. It’s not like screwing up on a TV show; you make a mistake on one of those things, you can affect the presidential stakes. But it’s an exhilarating experience and an honor.”
