Paul Bedard Whispers “Sweet” Somethings

Hubba! Hubba! Paul Bedard is “sweeter” than you might think. But it’s not because the mind behind “Washington Whispers” is going sweet in his column. When Bedard isn’t exposing Washington’s insider secrets for US News & World Report, you just might find him beekeeping in Purcellville, Va.

Bedard’s honey harvest is known as “Hubba Hubba Honey” and this year’s bounty is ready for the buy. Paul says “after a somewhat tough year of beekeeping,” he and Michele “have bottled a very nice summer vintage of medium-colored honey with the trademark citrus finish.”

The price for the hush-hush honey? It’s six buck a bear – still $1 less than the farmer’s market honey shipped in from NY and Pa. And, yes, local honey is good for fighting allergies. Sweet!

FishPoolDC: Our Insider’s Notes from Today’s Press Briefing

Not Quite Ready for Back-to-School: On the heels of Monday’s WH daily guidance that noted, “The president will continue his vacation through the end of the week,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs reported for duty in the briefing room as POTUS took an afternoon jaunt to the links with a few of the usual suspects. When RG was asked about POTUS’s seemingly inactive role in health care in recent days, he quipped that if he “hits Marvin [Nicholson]” he’ll be more active in health care. He followed by saying POTUS has held meetings today on the issue, and will make calls this week. “Just because the president might be doing something else doesn’t mean he’s not focused on health care,” Gibbs added. Congress returns to the classroom next Tuesday. (Any legislators with fun “What I did on my summer vacation” stories?)

Booyakasha!: Gibbs responded to questions about Dick Cheney’s Sunday Fox News appearance by calling the former VP’s comments the “same song and dance” from the early days of the Obama WH. (Anyone else really want to know what that song and dance would look like?) Cheney “clearly had his facts on a number of things wrong,” RG said, noting that the detainee review group (HIG) and not the WH will make decisions on the issue. RG added that former Bush-era DHS Secy Fran Townsend has applauded the group’s formation, Sen. John McCain’s remarks on interrogation have been “tremendously illuminating,” and Cheney’s track record on foreign policy “hasn’t borne a whole lot of fruit.” When Helen Thomas pressed for answers on reported continuation of “black sites” for interrogation, Gibbs denied that detainees were being tortured, and then carefully noted that detainees were sent to other countries to be tried where they violated laws but “not shipped in the dark of night to be tortured.”

And The New Cabler is… CQ‘s Josh Rogin to Foreign Policy Mag

Foreign Policy mag announced Laura Rozen‘s replacement at “The Cable” today– CQ‘s Josh Rogin. Rozen left the web column for a gig at Politico earlier this month.

Rogin had been a staff writer at CQ, focusing on defense and foreign policy, and he grabbed our attention at FBDC this summer when he got over 60 Congressional to sign a cast on his broken arm.

Foreign Policy‘s memo making the announcement:

We’re very pleased to announce that Josh Rogin will join Foreign Policy as our new columnist for The Cable, ForeignPolicy.com’s signature blog covering the making of American foreign policy in the age of Obama. Josh brings a zeal for scoops and a proven record of getting them as a defense and national security reporter for Congressional Quarterly, not to mention infectious energy and enthusiasm for the job and an extensive background on these subjects. We expect Josh to continue expanding The Cable and offering readers new regular features that will take them even deeper inside the people and institutions – as well as the ideas – that are shaping the national security debate. In just a few months since its launch under Laura Rozen’s great leadership, The Cable has become a daily must-read for FP’s influential audience in Washington and internationally (and, we should note, it’s still a fast-growing audience with ForeignPolicy.com on its way toward finishing August with a record count of around 5 million pageviews), and Josh is filled with exciting ideas for how to serve those readers even more original news and ahead-of-the-curve insight. Over the last few years at CQ, he’s been out front on everything from missile defense to the Pentagon’s budget wars to discovering that the predictive market Intrade was being manipulated to boost John McCain’s presidential prospects. A former defense reporter for Federal Computer Week magazine, Josh also worked as a Pentagon staff reporter in the Washington bureau of Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s leading daily newspaper. An international affairs graduate of GW, Josh speaks Japanese, “some” Korean and hails from outside Philadelphia. He’ll be working out of our offices here and planning to start filing starting Monday, September 14, so please join us in welcoming him.

– Moises Blake & Susan

>>MORE: Just heard from Rogin via email, who says, “It’s just a great opportunity to write about a whole range of topics and a chance to be part of a really aggressive and innovative new media project at foreignpolicy.com. Laura Rozen did an amazing job building up The Cable’s audience and reputation, so my job will be to keep The Cable growing and evolving. Should be a lot of fun, too!”

Good morning FishbowlDC! Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line.

What know and what we’re reading this Monday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | ONLINE | BOOKS | NEWS NOTES | JOBS

NEWSPAPERS

The Boston Globe printed an editorial Friday supporting appointing an interim replacement to Senator Kennedy’s vacant seat. The paper writes: “There is no mourning period when it comes to ensuring adequate representation for Massachusetts residents in the US Senate. Important votes on health care and climate change draw near. Surely the governor can find a temporary replacement whose views are consistent with those of Kennedy and the Massachusetts voters who kept faith with him since 1962.”

Just how far in advance do newspapers write obituaries? Slate has the answer here.

And on a lighter note, WUSA sports anchor Brett Haber will be penning a sports column for USA Today.

Freedom Communications, Inc., which owns the Orange County Register is expected to declare bankruptcy this week and news layoffs are apparently imminent at the San Francisco Chronicle.

TV

CBS’ Bob Schieffer already knows what he’s doing May 21st, 2010… giving a commencement speech at the Rochester Institute of Technology in NY. The school year is only just starting and commencement seems far off, but the school must be proud- they’ve already sent out the press release.

Were you looking for Katie Couric during Senator Kennedy’s funeral coverage this weekend? She explains on Twitter that she dropped her daughter off at college for her freshman year.

Fox News’ Julie Banderas tied the knot.

ONLINE

HuffPost is on the move in DC again. The growing website has moved its bureau three times- from K St. to Dupont Circle, now finally settling on 17th and Pennsylvania Ave., right across the street from the White House (so Nico Pitney can just run over when he gets called for a question– we kid, we kid!)

BOOKS

A new “encyclopedia of journalism” is being released under the direction of GWU School of Media and Public Affairs professor Christopher Sterling. The encyclopedia will be a six-volume set of books covering print, broadcast, Internet journalism, U.S. and international perspectives, history, technology, legal issues and court cases, and ownership and economics.

NEWS NOTES

CBS’ Cami McCormick, who was injured in Afghanistan last week, is in stable condition after undergoing successful surgeries. TVNewser has more.

WEST WING REPORTAGE

Fox News’ Major Garrett took your questions from Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard.

ABC White House producer Karen Travers took on the very difficult task of taste testing Obama-ritas and Barack-My-World ice cream this week on Martha’s Vineyard.
Former First Daughter Becomes “Today” Correspondent

A brunette Jenna Bush Hager will be joining the “Today Show” and working as a correspondent out of NBC’s Washington bureau, the AP reports.

She’ll contribute education stories about once a month and her first piece should air some time in September. Jenna’s 27 now, living in Baltimore and working as a teacher.

“Today” executive producer Jim Bell apparently approached the former first daughter with the idea after a few appearances on the show to promote her book “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope.”

“I think she can handle it,” Bell said in an interview with AP’s David Bauder. “I think she knows something about pressure and being under some scrutiny. When she came here for a handful of appearances, she knocked it out of the park.”

Jenna won’t be covering politics or talking about her experiences in the White House. “I don’t think it’s that interesting,” she said in this AP article. “I’m pretty normal.”

“Meet” Interviews Maria Shriver for Sunday’s Show

David Gregory interviewed Maria Shriver, Senator Kennedy’s niece and daughter of Eunice, for tomorrow’s “Meet the Press,” the hour of which will be dedicated to Senator Kennedy. Shriver is a former NBC correspondent.

The Shriver interview will air in its entirety tomorrow. FBDC has these excerpts for now:

Shriver: I think both of them (Ted Kennedy and Eunice Shriver) are incredible testaments to how long it takes– how hard one has to work to accomplish something. And I think we’ve lost sight of that in this country in all professions, whether it be journalism or politics. People expect you to get elected president and solve all the problems immediately. And I think if they look at people like Teddy or like Mummy, they see how long they had to stay in there and keep hammering away and hammering away. And I think that that gives us hope– when people get disillusioned that they didn’t get something done right away. If you look at people like that and say, “Wow– they accomplished a lot but it took a long time.”

And:

Gregory: What was that final year like for him?

Shriver: Well, I think it was, for me, watching this final year was– beautiful. Because I think– you know, there have been a lotta things written about Teddy over the years. And it hasn’t all been complimentary. And I think– for someone to have that kind of love come at you is a very powerful thing that very few people I think ever experience in their lifetime.

Check FBDC’s listings of all this Sunday’s shows here.

>>MORE: Shriver says watching her uncle’s final year was “beautiful.”

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

And after the jump, Shriver discusses the accomplishments of Senator Kennedy and her mother who died just two weeks ago, in a second video clip…
