What Were ‘Kike’s’ Parents Thinking?

For the love of God. Riddle me truly perplexed.
There are troubling names (Dick Swett, etc..) and then there are TROUBLING names.

C-SPAN’s “Q & A” Sunday at 8:00 / 11:00 PM
This week’s “Q&A” male guest is Venezuelan-born Kike Arnal, photographer and author of “In the Shadow of Power”.

The intro for Arnal’s book (thank heavens we can use his surname here) was written by Ralph Nader. The book is a visual expose of the “harsh social and economic realities” of Washington D.C.

But seriously. What about the harshness of his name? It’s difficult to imagine a reporter having even a basic conversation with him. It could go something like this:

Reporter: Hello, Kike, nice to meet you. I’ve got a couple of questions.
Kike: Sure, my pleasure.
Reporter (at the close of the interview): See ya later Kike, thanks for your time. Good luck with your photographs.

Profanity Lands Senator Entire Story

No doubt, sometimes it takes cussing to get a person’s thoughts across. And if it’s a senator, all the better.

Such was the case for Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), who is not known to be the warmest, fuzziest of senators. He earned himself an entire story for his foul language.

Bunning could opt to join the “No Cussing Club”. We don’t recommend it, but it’s an option. We hear White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is a founding member.

WaPo’s Sally Quinn to Receive Award

WaPo’s Sally Quinn, who saw the death of her print column this week, will receive an award.

As a pitch letter to FishbowlDC asked, “Where can you find Vanity Fair’s Maureen Orth, Quinn, Asst. Sec. of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Dept. of Veterans Affairs Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) all in one room at one time?”

The answer: At the Women’s Center Leadership Conference on March 13 with the theme, “The Power to Inspire”.

The Conference, which has been held for 25 years ,has attracted the likes of the late Katherine Graham, newswoman Jane Pauley, Senate hopeful Carly Fiorina and actress Olympia Dukakis to address a crowd of seven hundred plus.

Nat’l Enquirer Weighs Opening D.C. Bureau

The National Enquirer may strut its stuff and open up a Washington office, FishbowlDC has learned. The supermarket tabloid is riding the wave of busting the affair and subsequent baby girl of former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) and Rielle Hunter.

In fact, said National Enquirer Executive Editor Barry Levine, credibility would be at an all-time high in the nation’s capitol, since the publication just received the nod from Pulitzer to be nominated for prizes in two categories.

Levine told FishbowlDC that he’d seriously consider Politics Daily columnist Emily Miller for the job of opening the bureau, considering it was she who persuasively convinced him to submit the necessary materials to be considered for a Pulitzer. He referred to Miller as a “pit bull” reporter.

“One day I hope she would possibly consider joining the Enquirer,” Levine said. “If we entertain plans to start a Washington bureau she would be an ideal candidate for the job. I think it’s something that we’ll certainly think about and look into. It could be a bounty of stories based on [our] credibility now in the nation’s capitol.”

How often do you Google yourself? I have Google alerts for “news” and “blogs” once a day-a healthy amount of self-obsession, but not too over the top.

Who is your favorite working journalist? Tom Wolfe.

Did you see “Twilight” and “New Moon?” If so, who is more your type, Edward or Jacob? I’ve seen both, and actually have an answer: Team Edward. Maybe it’s my inner goth, too much listening to the Cure as a teenager, but I’ll always side with the gaunt, nattily-dressed Victorian-looking vampire over the more jock-like wolf pack.

Who would you rather have dinner with – First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Being vegetarian, I’d be nervous about having to hunt for my dinner. So to be safe, I’ll go with Michelle.

When did you last cry and why? Watching the last game of the Mets 2007 season.

What word do you routinely misspell? Occasionally.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? Ringer_Bonjour.

What swear word do you use most often? Zounds!

What word or phrase do you overuse? “Spar,” “slam,” and “bash.” But they’re just so useful in POLITICO headlines!

What TV show do you have to watch? Lost. Sadly, not for much longer.

Spam Demon Sends Out Dirty Twitter Messages

Unless journos in this town are turning wildly inappropriate, Twitter is involuntarily sending out porn-laden messages to people’s private inboxes.

I’ve received several such messages from political types and scribes around town. Others on Twitter are warning their fan clubs that it’s happening, trying to pre-apologize before it reaches a recipient.

Here’s a sampling of what’s being sent out (To protect the innocent, I’m not attaching names to the quotes considering there’s no way they sent them intentionally and they are known names around town):

1. “hey, i’ve been having better sex and longer with this here.”

2. “hi, i’m 24/female/horny… i have to get off here but message me on my windows live messenger name BLANK@hotmail.com.”
