The Atlantic’s Green Admits Headline Obsession

Today’s lead comes from The Atlantic‘s Joshua Green.

Hurricane season is upon us, and that means blaring, all-caps 72-point headlines from Matt Drudge, who is obsessed with them. I am, too. And I’ve always found Drudge’s alarmist headlines enjoyable, in the same way that whacked-out New York Post headlines are enjoyable. One of his best is “KILLSTORM.”

Read the full post here. It’s a contest, really, in which he asks readers to send him Drudge-esque headlines.

Internal Memo Says TWT to Sell for $1

U.S. News & World Report‘s Paul Bedard has an internal memo claiming that the 30-day impending deal to sell The Washington Times is for $1.

Michael Marshall, UPI editor and TWT adviser, wrote the memo. Bedard’s writes, the sale will be completed within 30 days and that “many of the former Times officials who were fired by Preston Moon, who has been financing the paper for the past several months, will be reinstalled.” Preston Moon is the son of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon the South Korean spiritual and head of the Unification Church.

The story indicates there is no official word on what will happen with TWT Editor Sam Dealey, who had no comment just yet.

Read the memo here.

Intern Zonks Out During Morning Journo Chat

A rough day, indeed. First, you spend the morning at C-SPAN visiting with Founder Brian Lamb. Then you sit around a conference table at the Boston University House on Connecticut Avenue in Woodley Park listening to 90 minutes of details and guidance about the fall internship you’ll be doing.

Some 20 Miami of Ohio interns endured what proved to be a grueling schedule this morning designed by Fox News’s Congressional Reporter Chad Pergram, who has been mentoring his alma mater’s D.C. summer interns for several years, but was not there today. During the classroom chat, The Hill‘s Washington Scene blogger and In the Know gossip columnist Christina Wilkie gave interns what Pergram describes as a “pastiche” of what to expect here in Washington.

One intern didn’t fare so well. He fell fast asleep during the classroom chat, but at one point jarred himself awake to ask a question about starting a literary/poetry blog. Thankfully the remaining interns stayed awake. Luckily the designated future intern for The Hill kept it together and took notes.

Pergram says he has never witnessed an intern with this program zonk out in the past. Cheryl Gibbs, the Miami of Ohio journalism professor who is leading the fall internship program, concurred, saying that this kind of situation is not typical. “There may be a medication side effect,” she told FishbowlDC. “It’s frustrating for me. If it is medically related, that’s what we have to deal with. When you’re in a program like this, you deal with the whole person. And it doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s a problem we’re trying to work through.”

White House Scribe Reveals Fave Food and Embarrassing Moment on Job

NJ’s “The Hotline” recently featured The Hill‘s White House correspondent Sam Youngman. Youngman provided what appeared to be brutally honest answers, mentioning his mother, Hunter S. Thompson and prison (not necessarily in that order and no, he never did any hard time). We hope this tantalizing picture of cinnamon rolls doesn’t distract Youngman too much this afternoon or send him on a cinnamon roll bender.

Here’s a sampling of his interview:

If you could have an endless supply of any food, what would you get? Harris Teeter mini-cinnamon rolls. Twice as addictive as meth-filled cigarettes laced with crack. And Gulf shrimp. Lots and lots of Gulf shrimp.

What’s your most embarrassing on-the-job moment? (Or as embarrassing as you’d like to reveal?) There have been so many, but the first time President Obama called on me to ask a question in the Oval Office. I was pool, and my hands were shaking too bad, because I was nervous, to take notes. Problem was, my old recorder screwed up badly. My pool report contained an incorrect characterization of one of his answers. Turns out he wasn’t telling me we were in a second Great Depression.

We’d bring you the rest of the interview, but we can’t – it’s behind that pesky pay wall. If you do have a subscription, the rest of Youngman’s responses is worth the read.

WaPo Suspends the Wise Guy

WaPo sports columnist Mike Wise has been suspended for a month for fabricating news Monday. What got him into hot water came in the form of invented tweets.

Wise delivered news of his suspension on his radio show Tuesday.

His last tweet was written 22 hours ago when he wrote, “I just got an e-mail about The Post’s guidelines on the use of Twitter. Weird. I wonder why?”

Mr. and Mrs. Moneybags in Congress – Who are They?

As of 6 a.m. today, The Hill has named its second annual list of 50 Wealthiest Members of Congress based on 2009 disclosures. Sen. John Kerry comes in at number 1.

In today’s list in The Hill, Kerry is up from last year’s list, when he was also number 1.

An excerpt:

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) tops the list for the second year in a row. His minimum net worth was $188.6 million at the end of 2009, up by more than $20 million from 2008, according to his financial disclosure form.

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” featured the list this morning by having Managing Editor Bob Cusack on as a guest. Co-host Joe Scarborough joked that when he was in Congress he used to stay up late at night reading these lists and eating Ramen Noodles. “I love Ramen Noodles,” agreed co-host Mika Brzezinski.

Cusack said some members will make their wealth and then run for Congress. “Some of them obviously self-finance their campaigns,” he said. “It is a concern that a lot of people say, ‘Hey, the average Joe can’t get into Congress.’”

Scarborough perked up and said, “I got in … with my Ramen Noodles.”

The Hill isn’t the first publication to try to stake the richest members of Congress as an annual feature. Roll Call has named “The 50 Richest Members of Congress” for 22 years, a publication source told FishbowlDC, adding that it’s one of Roll Call‘s “signature” lists. Kerry ranked 1 in both 2008 and 2009 on Roll Call’s lists. In 2009, he rolled in with $167.55 million, after having an identical net worth in 2008.

Scribes Organize Bash for ‘Popular’ Jennifer Loven

An e-mail to White House scribes made the rounds this weekend to announce a party Wednesday at Old Ebbitt Grill for AP’s Jennifer Loven. She’s moving on to The Glover Park Group.

The subject line: Save the Date: A Celebration for Jennifer Loven. AP White House Reporter Julie Pace and AP White House Correspondent Ben Feller are the party’s official organizers.

Quick update on the details for Jennifer’s party, which will be Wednesday from 7-10pm at Old Ebbitt. We have a space reserved in the atrium, which is at the back of the restaurant with food, cash bar, and lots of good people. Again, it would be helpful if you could let me know if you’re able to make it so we have a general idea of the head count. But it’s also no problem if you just show up! Thanks, and look forward to seeing everyone Wednesday!

A later e-mail added, “As you can tell from this invite, Jen is quite popular! If you think you’ll be able to make it and could email Julie back to let us know, that would really help us keep tabs on the head count. No worries if you don’t know at this point, please come anyway! Look forward to seeing everyone next week.”

WaPo’s Mui Returns to her New Orleans Roots

NEW FEATURE

Today we debut a feature that focuses purely on writing. This gives us a chance to showcase the best of the best out there amongst Washington D.C. and political writers when it comes to writing leads. The goal is for this to become a daily staple of FishbowlDC. There will be no set time to it – when we find what we think is an exceptional lead, we’ll post it. This will not be partisan in nature, although at times we may feature the lead of a column, editorial or story that leans one way or another. Please don’t be shy. Send us your leads or those of your coworkers at fishbowlDC@mediabistro.com or directly to me at fishbowlBetsy@gmail.com.

Our first featured lead is by WaPo‘s Ylan Mui, a WaPo business writer who wrote a story for the WP Magazine that ran Sunday:

I bumped into my past one steamy afternoon in June at a snowball stand just outside of New Orleans.

WaPo Sports Columnist Mike Wise Turns Into Literal Wiseguy

How does a journalist up his Twitter fan club following these days?

One option is to dot your copy with the word p—y, as expertly done by WaPo humor columnist Gene Weingarten. (He was mimicking author Buzz Bissinger, who has an affinity for dirty tweets and often dropping the f-bomb.) Another is to outright fabricate stories, which is how WaPo sports columnist Mike Wise tried to tackle Twitter.

The sports site, SBNation.com’s Mike Prada has the details on Wise’s phony tweeting. Wise was trying to play a joke on readers – namely by inventing sports facts and hoping more readers would follow him. He even bragged about it on his radio show.

Wise’s Twitter handle is: @MikeWiseguy. And the handle appears to be fitting.

SBNation.com reports that Wise fessed up and tweeted this apology:

“As part of a bit on my show today, I tried to test the accuracy of social media reporting. Probably not the best way to go about experiment. But in the end, it proved two things: 1. I was right about nobody checking facts or sourcing and 2. I’m an idiot. Apologies to all involved.”
