David Shuster: The FishbowlDC Interview

shuster34.jpgDavid Shuster is a correspondent for MSNBC.

How many suits do you own? Allow me to rephrase the question so I don’t have to get into issues associated with the chaos that is my closet. I have about a dozen different suits that are in the Shuster rotation.

What word do you routinely misspell? I don’t misspell words. But my boss claims that I routinely use … in my copy when I should be using — .

Did you see Brokeback Mountain? Yes

Did you see The Da Vinci Code? Yes

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? Hail to the Victors (Michigan fight song)

What time did you get up this morning? 8am

When did you last cry and why? Yesterday, as my beloved convertible broke down for the 3rd time in the last two weeks. The last time I cried for real was last month when I watched a community theater production of Anne Frank. Ariel Goldman (sister of my fiance Julianna) had the starring role. When tears started rolling down her cheeks in the final scene, there wasn’t a dry eye among her family or in the entire audience.

Which of the seven deadly sins are you? Pride

Beach, city or country? If I had to choose… I’d say “beach.”

Would you say you’re cute? Pretty? Hot? Beautiful? I wouldn’t spend time thinking about it.

What color is your bathroom? My favorite bathroom at home has taupe wall paper with an interesting white pattern.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? About 250.

What’s your opinion of New York City? I love New York City.

What’s your favorite letter? J

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? Chris Matthews. The four years I’ve been working for him have been the most rewarding and meaningful of my career. I know that everybody has an opinion about CM after watching him on the air. But what you probably don’t know is that off-camera, CM cuts right to the heart of a story faster and better than anybody; plus he is a terrific copy editor, a wonderful mentor, and a throwback to the old days when journalists were smart, agressive, muckrakers who let the chips fall where they may.

Have you ever downloaded a podcast? If so, which one? Yes… The Daily Show/John Stewart.

Who’s your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? Constantine. I never saw him on the show… but I saw him at a party once in DC. His girlfriend was totally wasted. So, he hailed a cab for her and went back into the party. He had the look of somebody who doesn’t shower very often…weird guy… but definitely memorable and somehow “appropriate” for American Idol.

When’s the last time you volunteered? Where? Last week at a community charity fundraiser in Montgomery County.

Who is your favorite active journalist? Brian Williams. I’ve admired his work for years… long before he became an anchor star. And last year, I had the opportunity to work with him during NBC’s coverage of hurricane Katrina. No journalist is better… tv or print. And no journalist cares more about our profession than Brian.

What did you have for breakfast? Cereal, toast, yogurt, banana, and OJ.

What’s your favorite item of clothing? My tennis shoes.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? Despite my friends’ contention that I would die without hair care products… I’ll say, “toothbrush.”

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? Superpower hearing… the kind that would let me listen in through walls, buildings, and etc.

Better role model: GIJoe? Barbie? GI Joe

Add to this sentence, begun by the Houston Chronicle’s Julie Mason: “Shamerock…” suits
