Nevin Martell’s Latest Freak Show Without a Tent is a Perfect Summer Introduction

Nevin Martell Courtesy of Photographer Scott SuchmanJust in time for the summer months comes DC food and culture writer Nevin Martell‘s Freak Show Without a Tent: Swimming with Piranhas, Getting Stoned in Fiji and Other Family Vacations, a memoir chronicling his globetrotting family’s misadventures to far-flung corners of the world. Not only is it the perfect beach read, it will add a level of excitement and danger to the much needed R&R you have planned for the months ahead. And should something more thrilling be on your mind, it is no doubt chock-full of ideas.

While it sounds like it’s all fun and games, Martell recalls, ”On our regular adventures, my sister and I often found ourselves thinking, ‘Buy the ticket, take the ride and hope we survive — so we can tell our therapists all about it later.”

Fiji. The Rio Negro. And Vanuatu. This is the chronicle of my childhood adventures…My dad had a thirst for adventure and wanted our family to explore the farthest reaches of the known, and unknown, world. Freak Show Without a Tent is the story of our family vacations. Forget Disney Land and Club Med. We lived on the edge.”

And for those who just owning a book isn’t enough (we get it, you only do signed copies), Martell will be signing away this Sunday, June 29th from 1 – 3 pm at Trohv (232 Carroll St. NW) in Takoma Park.

Either way, check it out, on bookshelves today.

Martell regularly contributes to DC and national outlets include The Washington Post, NPR’s blog “The Salt,” Wine Enthusiast, TravelChannel.com, Plate, and others, and has most recently authored The Founding Farmers Cookbook: 100 Recipes for True Food & Drink.
