Different Eyes, Different Views

If you’re not a regular Richard Prince reader, he’s the industry must-read as to all issues of diversity and race in journalism.

In his most recent column, Prince looks at how the Post’s new self-critiquing exercise is allowing members of the staff to raise issues of minority concern in a way they’ve never able to before.

The concerns run from potentially racist portrayals to the desire to be more culturally sensitive in certain reporting situations, but the different views are at least broadening the paper’s internal perspective.

Ed Thiede, the Post’s AME for news who heads up the experiment, says that overall the experiment seems to be working: “They tend to be a little long sometimes and a little off message sometimes, but I have made changes in policy based on what has been suggested. Do I think they influence how we cover stories? It is too soon for that. But they may….”
