Dinner With Women, Coffee With Wolf

Fishbowl operatives crashed the annual gala and Helen Thomas Award dinner at the Fairmont Hotel last nigth. The event, hosted by the American News Women’s Club, featured a roast of Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee, emceed by Judy Woodruff and Al Hunt.

The chief roasters were Chris “Better Late Than Never” Matthews and his wife, Kathleen, James “Republicans Suck” Carville and Mary “Democrats Blow” Matalin, Bob Woodward, and Richard Cohen. Matalin, who roasted everyone in sight, landed perhaps the night’s best zing: “Richard’s here with his favorite date: Himself.”

Matalin also clarified that Judy Woodruff was not actually “D.C.’s first lady of journalism”: “If there really were a first lady of political journalism it would be Jeff Gannon.”

As much fun as the A-list head table was, though, they looked out over a “geriatric convention” in the audience, where many members spent the evening recounting the glory days of the Hoover administration. One sighting of note in the audience? The Examiner’s Karen Feld, complete with poodle Campari–one of the two of them was a guest of Northrup Grumman, but no one’s sure which. Question: Is it every appropriate to bring a pet to a black tie dinner?

The raffle prize of the evening? Two in-studio seats to watch a live Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, followed by coffee with Wolf. According to the program, the estimated retail value was….priceless.
