The Washington Examiner has made a hire on that second Yeas & Nays gossip columnist post that needed to be filled.
Noteworthy backstory: Editor Steve Smith grew frustrated in the process of replacing former columnist Tara Palmeri, who’s now at NYP‘s Page 6. We’re hearing that if this hire hadn’t happened, Smith briefly considered shifting the hiring responsibility to editor Jacque Bland. Smith tried to hire Nick Ballasy, who apparently said he wanted to continue to do more “serious” journalism (to which some at the Examiner rolled their eyes in response). Ballasy works for the news web site Cybercast News Service.
See Smith’s announcement e-mail after the jump. It includes a second hire, Lisa Gartner, who will cover the less flashy beat of “Virginia.” She comes highly qualified and is also award-winning…
I’m pleased to announce two additions to the Washington Examiner editorial staff.
Katy Adams, a four-time Emmy winner, will be joining Nikki Schwab on our Yeas & Nays team. Katy comes to us from FOX 5, where she has worked the last four years after stints at two stations in West Palm Beach. She spent most of her TV career as an investigative producer and also has covered features and political news. She produced election specials and live field coverage of the Presidential Inauguration for the FOX network. She is known in Washington for her keen news sense, enterprising reporting, and capacious Rolodex. She starts at the Examiner on August 16.
Also arriving on the 16th is Lisa Gartner, who will be covering Virginia. A graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern, Lisa comes to us from New Times, a weekly in south Florida. She has done internships at Conde Nast Traveler, Chicago Magazine and Texas Monthly. At Medill, she was editor-in-chief of North by Northwestern, an SPJ award-winning daily Web magazine. Lisa finished third, one spot behind our Hayley Peterson, in Hearst’s 2010 national news writing competition, and took second place in the features category in 2009. The Hearst awards are often called the Pulitzers of college journalism.
