AP CEO Outlines Steps to Press Freedom

AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt gave a speech today at the National Press Club to lay out a plan to ensure press freedoms in the aftermath of DOJ secretly seizing AP phone records.

He outlined five steps to safeguarding freedoms. They include a chance to be heard before docs are taken, judicial oversight, updated guidelines at DOJ (he says they’re antiquated), enacting a federal shield law and assurance of follow-up to what AG Eric Holder has stated regarding reporters: “The Justice Department will not prosecute any reporter for doing his or her job. The Department should not criminalize — or threaten to criminalize — journalists for doing their jobs, such as by calling them co-conspirators under the Espionage Act, as they did Fox reporter James Rosen. This needs to be part of an established directive, not only limited to the current administration.”

Pruitt’s full remarks are on the AP website. See them here.

WaPo Wine Tasting: ‘Please Check With Your Supervisors Before Attending’

WaPo‘s internal memos can be a hoot.

Today The Washington Post launches its Wine Club. To celebrate, they’re inviting employees to a wine tasting from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The party takes place at the “New Ventures space” or “4th Floor Lennox” where workers will be able to sample wines from the publication’s first shipment.

Our favorite line: “Please check with your supervisor before attending.”

What are they, 12? We think employees are responsible enough to decide if they can attend, don’t you?

As a perk… continued…

Breitbart’s Boyle Gets Applause at Presser

Breitbart News‘ Matthew Boyle is occasionally needled by members of the media for his in-your-face ways and reporting tactics. But today he can throw all that in their faces as he received applause at a morning presser on immigration outside the Capitol.

Afternoon Reading List 06.19.13.

Bill Clinton is holding Hillary back — In her Bloomberg column with the headline “Hillary Has to Dump Bill Now,” Margaret Carlson examines Hillary Clinton’s “return to the living.” Carlson runs through a list of Clinton’s recent doings: unveiling her Twitter account (where she acknowledged the pantsuit), not being tan, being rested and ready and picking a “rocking photo.” The emergence of “Hillary 2.0” came at a poor time, however, during her the week long annual celebration of her husband’s Global Initiative, where she says Bill Clinton was “surrounded by his cast and on his turf.” During this period, it was Bill who made the headlines, with loose remarks about President Obama’s involvement in Syria (he said the president looked like a “wuss.”). Carlson basically states that if Clinton has any shot at the White House, she needs to learn how to control her husband.

First Couple looking to fill Friday nights — The young Obamas are growing up, and as the President said, “Now that my girls are getting older, they don’t want to spend that much time with me anyway.” So to keep him and FLOTUS from getting lonely, Peter Nicholas reported for the Wall Street Journal, President Obama is filling the couple’s time by hosting casual Friday dinner parties, which have often continued into Saturday morning. The White House did not disclose who has been invited, but according to sources familiar with the dinners, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault and Carlyle Group co-founder David Rubenstein have all been guests at the soirées. A White House official said the couple is inviting guests not necessarily of political prominence, but any interesting people. Obama has been criticized in the past for giving Washington’s social life a cold shoulder, but he now appears to be embracing the party scene.

What kind of horses are the New Hampshire senators like?

In Memoriam: Michael Hastings

Michael Hastings, a writer for Buzzfeed and Rollling Stone best known for the career-ending profile of Gen. Stanely McChrystal, was killed yesterday in a car crash in Los Angeles.

News of Hasting’s death first came Tuesday afternoon from BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith, who posted a note on the site that said,”We are shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone.”

“Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians,” Smith said in his note. “He wrote stories that would otherwise have gone unwritten, and without him there are great stories that will go untold.”

Rolling Stone followed with an obituary a few minutes later.

Hastings’ hallmark as reporter was his refusal to cozy up to power. While other embedded reporters were charmed by McChrystal’s bad-boy bravado and might have excused his insubordination as a joke, Hastings was determined to expose the recklessness of a man leading what Hastings believed to be a reckless war.

Buzzfeed has a full story about Hastings here, there are tributes from the Buzzfeed staff here and finally, a collection of remembrances from other journalists, here.

A TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL HASTINGS: “Michael Hastings was really only interested in writing stories someone didn’t want him to write — often his subjects; occasionally his editor. While there is no template for a great reporter, he was one for reasons that were intrinsic to who he was: ambitious, skeptical of power and conventional wisdom, and incredibly brave. And he was warm and honest in a way that left him many unlikely friends among people you’d expect to hate him.” — BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith. More… “We fought, first, over the adjectives in his stories — ‘discredited’ was a favorite — and then over his theories, which were typically the opposite of whatever I was hearing from my Washington sources. In the meantime I marveled at his talent and at the thing I hadn’t particularly expected: his generosity.” Read the full story here.

“I am no Michael Hastings and I probably never will be. My temperament and orientation is different. I approach my subjects from a different angle and I ask different questions. I do pretty well for myself. But when I’m in the arena with people like Hastings, I’m always forced to check myself.” — The Week’s Marc Ambinder.
Code and Theory is a creative agency behind publishing websites like “The Verge,” and “Interview” magazine. They also have an odd fondness for the Dewey Decimal System.

Managing partners Steve Baer and Mike Treff took the mediabistroTV crew on an Olde Timey New York meets modern design tour of their fifth floor offices. The guys showed how they added wide open spaces, planned randomness and hip wood floors to the windows, the wood and the brick that originally came with the building built by the Astor family in 1886. Then there were the books, the many, many, many books.

‘Force of Nature’ Linda Douglass Out at Atlantic Media; Emily Lenzner In

Here’s a bit of a shocker.

This morning we learn that Linda Douglass, Atlantic Media‘s head of communications, is leaving at the end at the month. She will stay on board in an advisory role. “I will miss her very much,” said spokeswoman Natalie Raabe in an email. “But a terrific person will be taking her place: Emily Lenzner.”

Emily Lenzer had her own consulting firm, before that she was managing director at SKDKnickerbocker. And before that she handled publicity for ABC News.

Here in the Fishbowl, this is rough news. We’ve had spirited discussions with Douglass over the past three and a half years and despite the occasional friction that occurs between publicists and journalists (let’s put it this way: if you haven’t been on the receiving end of a stinging Douglass email you haven’t lived) we have enjoyed working with Douglass a great deal and admire her humor, smarts and toughness.

See the glowing and touching internal memo from Atlantic‘s President Justin Smith… continued…

NPR Shows Off New Facility

NPR recently moved from Chinatown into its new 400,000 square-foot home on North Capitol, and they’re excited about it. Eager to show off the new facility, the organization offered a tour to members of the media Tuesday morning, starting with breakfast from their in-house chefs, along with some talking points from CEO Gary Knell, who outlined some impressive features of the space.

The news broke today when Byron Tau, Politico’s lobbying and influence reporter, sent an email inviting colleagues to a soirée in Mak’s honor, with a promise to “celebrate the man, the myth, the legend,” this Friday night.

AnonymASS Tipsters of the Day

Not just one of you, but two (two!) of you have so little to do with your time that you made it a point to get in touch and express disapproval of yesterday’s spotted feature, wherein Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, paid a visit to The City Church.

Dynamite post of the week (then again, it’s onlybMonday): Spotted: Sen. Harry Reid at City Church. With a great back of the head photo that could have been a zillion other people. Needless to say, I was riveted

As were we. We would’ve said enthralled, though, but riveted works, too.

Re: Reid photo choice: You’d be a great selection to head the photo staff at the Chicago Sun-Times

Ha. Good one. But seriously? How is it that you don’t recognize the back of Reid’s head? Are you really Washington journalists? We don’t think you’re really Washington journalists.

All Clear At CBS News’ Washington Bureau

Those on site reported that police brought in a robot an an x-ray machine before giving everyone the all-clear to go back inside.

Politico’s Gaskell To Join Defense One

Defense One, a new site from Atlantic Media, announced that Politico’s Stephanie Gaskell will join the site as a senior reporter and associate editor.

“Stephanie is a true pro, well-known across the military beat for her no-nonsense style and fair voice,” Kevin Baron, Defense One’s executive editor, said in a news release. “Having covered New York City, two wars, and now Washington, D.C., from the Pentagon to Congress and industry, Stephanie was an obvious fit for Defense One, which will benefit tremendously from her respected track record of unabashed journalism and eye for the stories that matter to readers.”

TNR Asks About Politico’s Sexism, Gets VandeHei’s Media Savvy Wrath

Politico’s Editor-in-Chief John Harris and Executive Editor Jim VandeHei recently sat down with The New Republic’s senior editor Isaac Chotiner for a two-hour interview. They talked about Politico’s role as an insidery conversation driver, about market corrections in politics (as in the flame outs of Sarah Palin, Herman Cain) and who on Capitol Hill is savvy when it comes to the media (not many, says VandeHei).

It seemed like a pretty ho-hum if not overly positive interview, at least until Chotiner brought up the charge that some women find Politico a difficult place to work. Harris responds rather matter of factly and tosses in a little deflection. He tells TNR that in the beginning, Politico was a startup and it was a difficult place for everyone to work, not just women. If that sounds like a PR-crafted soundbite, it just might be because VandeHei says sort of the same thing, just not so tactfully and with an obvious air of being on the defense. “Wait a second,” he says to Chotiner. “I want to add to what John said. I find this critique both offensive and wrong.”

From there, things went downhill. What was that about who has media savvy and who doesn’t?
