Inclusive. That’s the word I’d select to summarize the Washington Post Magazine‘s recent redesign. The new Sunday supplement doesn’t drop until this weekend but FishbowlDC got our hands on the first copy of the revamped rag to leave the newsroom. Here’s my take…
Editor Debra Leithauser, Art Director Janet Michaud and GM Jenny Abramson hit a home run. Flipping through the fresh but familiar pages of the new WaPo Mag is kind of like sitting down with an old friend for cocktails — only, your friend got really hot since the last time you saw them. The features are fast but fulfilling reads. The tone is personal, not preachy. And the design is sexy yet sensible. The outcome? A truly solid product for Columbia Heights hipsters, McLean mommies and everyone in between.
Besides the apparent artistic, graphical and brand changes, new features include:
Whatever Happened To: Kind of a “where are they now” update on previously featured Wapo stories that left readers wondering “what ever happened to..”.
Our Town: Insightful illustrations from two Post artists who recount on-the-scene experiences from a variety of destinations in the D.C. Metro area.
Unspun: a more personal than policy interview with a politician.
The Breakdown: photos, graphics, fun facts and quirky details about the parts that make up an object (from monster trucks to walk-in closets).
Trend Report: a weekly take on “real world” fashion and beauty that features local boutiques, services and reader-applicable advice.
Behind the Lens: the story behind a unique or powerful photograph from the Washington Post.
But fear not, die hard Date Lab readers. Date Lab, First Person Singular, restaurant reviews from food critic Tom Sietsema, Gene Weingarten‘s “Below the Beltway,” Second Glance, Crossword puzzles and the insightful long-form pieces are still alive and well in the new WP Mag.
