FLASH: More People Read A Newspaper!

You might remember, from time to time, that the Post isn’t the only newspaper in Washington–in addition to the City Paper, the Blade, the Georgetowner, the Hill, Roll Call, the Examiner, and a bunch of others, there’s actually another daily. You might have even heard of it: The Washington Times. (And, yes, it’s different than the New York Times.)

Yesterday, the Wash Times’ staff marked the paper’s 23rd anniversary with cake, champagne, and the announcement that it actually saw its audited circulation rise in the last six months. The Audit Bureau’s numbers show that for the six-month period ending March 31, the newspaper’s weekday circ climbed to 103,017, about a 3 percent increase over the previous year.

The paper’s Editor-in-Chief, Wesley Pruden, said: “We’re scoring important exclusive after exclusive…. I think Washington, official and otherwise, is realizing that The Times is the lively newspaper in town, packing a terrific punch as the indispensable source of news, and we’re enormously pleased that this is so. Newspapers, like humans, can suffer hardening of the arteries, and we’re determined not to let that happen to us as we approach the completion of our first quarter of a century as an important part of the life of the nation.”

Um, yes. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Just for comparison, even with its recent declines, the Post is about seven times as large, the Examiner is printing about 2.5 times as many, and even the Express is double that big.
