Highlights from 7.27.14 Sunday Shows

Hillary Clinton on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” answering what Vladimir Putin is ‘like as a man’ : “Well, he’s very tough. He’s a very arrogant person to deal with, which I think is a combination of this vision of Russia and some fundamental insecurity because when you are dealing with him, he often acts as though he couldn’t care less, he’s not interested, even talking with him about getting Russia into the World Trade Organization which is something the Obama administration was determined to do because we want to have a rules based order in so far as possible.”

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on President Putin on CBS’s “Face the Nation” : “I think that Putin is living in his own world.  He has made up an awful lot of lies in terms of who is responsible for the fact that the Soviet Union disintegrated. He actually called that the greatest disaster of the 2oth century. Hard to believe, when there were two world wars that killed millions of people; among them, Russians. So that’s the first lie. And then he has, in fact, propagandized all that to his own country, and then into central and Eastern Europe. I think what he wants to do is to reestablish himself as the identification of Russian nationalism. And then also to do everything he can to kind of reestablish something akin to the Soviet Union, obviously not that, but a grouping of countries around Russia that are completely subservient to him and to Moscow. And until he can get that, he’s going to work to destabilize Eastern Europe.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on NBC’s “Meet the Press” : If you had 2,500 rockets falling on your cities, if you had terror tunnels dug underneath your border to reach your kindergarten, if you had attacks by land, by sea, and by air, of course  take action. You take action, you take military action aplenty. I have no doubt that you would. So does Israel.”

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) on “FOX News Sunday” : “It’s ironic, we’re here in Congress right now, and the president doesn’t want to work with us while we’re in town. He wants to wait until we’re gone. The president has a lot of time on his schedule to secure fund- raisers. He has no time to secure the border. He has not taken his job seriously in this regard. The House is willing to lead. The House has laid out what we’ll do to solve this problem. The president wants to sit back and play politics. He’s flying around doing fundraisers. He doesn’t have time to come and sit down and work with Congress. We’re going to get this problem solved.”

Council on Foreign Relations president Richard Haass on NPR’s “Weekend Show Saturday” discussing President Obama’s desire to ‘reset’ policy with Russia : “The United States embarked on a reset. You could say it may have worked for a while. We got some cooperation with Russia in the supplying of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, there was some limited cooperation against terrorism, some progress in arms control. But the phase of collaboration or cooperation has essentially come – not entirely – but largely to an end, and Mr. Putin seems to have embarked on a different foreign policy trajectory and instead he’s going to have an alternative universe, one of a quote-on-quote ‘greater Russia.’ One of the interesting things will be to see whether he can survive or live with forces he seems to have unleashed.”
