Highlights from the 8.10.14 Sunday Shows

Sen. Dick Durbin on NBC’s “Meet the Press” : “Only Iraq can save Iraq. The president has stepped in because it has threatened genocide. I support that. Bringing food and water to these people who are dying on that mountaintop, of course the United States should do that. And when it comes to the Kurds, yes, they have been the adults in this neighborhood, the grownups. And I think that we ought to help them preserve their capital against this ISIS invasion. And we also want to make certain that the Americans that are on the ground are protected. The bottom line is this: there is so much that we can do to help the Iraqis help themselves. But ultimately, they have to save their own country.”

Gen. Carter Ham, former U.S. Commander in Mosul, said on ABC’s “This Week” : “I think the initial strikes are already having some effect.  A few strikes by the United States, many more by the Iraqi air force which is encouraging, it appears to have at least given pause to the Islamic extremists as they seek to advance toward Erbil and other cities, but much more effort will be required to achieve a positive outcome longer-term.”

Amb. James Jeffrey on CBS’s “Face the Nation” : “If ISIS people march out of their Sunni Arab hot land that they’ve taken over into Shia, into Kurdish area, they’re going to be stopped by a combination of people on the ground who are willing to fight, such as the Peshmerga, and American air strikes, such as we’ve seen.  We’ve done this in Libya in 2011, Kosovo, Bosnia, all around the world.  And it works if we have other people’s boots on the ground and our air supporting them.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on “FOX News Sunday” : “To every member of Congress, you’ve been told by every major intelligence leader in our nation that we’re threatened. The homeland is threatened by the presence of ISIL in Iraq and Syria.”

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on CNN’s “State of the Union” : “While the president has continued to say this is an Iraqi problem, this is an Iraqi problem, but it’s a United States problem and it is a threat to our national security. And I say that with the full backing or the quotes from our director of national intelligence, our secretary of homeland security, the director of the FBI, and even the attorney general of the United States. This is turning into, as we had predicted for a long time, a regional conflict which does pose a threat to the security of the United States of America, and launching three strikes around a place where a horrible humanitarian crisis is taking place, meanwhile, ISIS continues to make gains everywhere, yes, is clearly very, very ineffective, to say the least.”
