A Journo Interviews Weiner’s Ex-Phone Sex Girlfriend: What Was it Like?

Heading to Vegas to hunt down former Rep. Anthony Weiner‘s (D-N.Y.) ex-phone sex girlfriend isn’t the worst gig in the world. Her name: Lisa Weiss. She’s a blackjack dealer who works at a major casino on the strip. The casino has threatened her with termination if she does additional media interviews. But what the hell? Throw caution to the wind. This was a documentary film, and The Hill‘s political reporter Alex Bolton was up for the task. His employer allowed him to take a break from his congressional duties to freelance for Stateless Media, a new Washington, D.C.-based film company that produces short films on political and international matters.

Many of the questions he asked were concocted before he flew out there. For the shoot, they had to line up a cameraman and a sound guy, and Weiss insisted on Stateless Media getting someone to do her makeup. Her nocturnal schedule allowed for a late-night interview that stretched out for nearly three hours, lasting until 1 a.m. Naturally they smoked cigs and drank wine throughout.

“Hey, it was Thursday night in Vegas — the city is one big party and what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas,” Bolton told FishbowlDC.

Weiss did not want her sexting chats with Weiner exposed. “Lisa Weiss was leery of sitting down for an on-camera interview after she felt she had been burned by Radar Online. One of the interesting things I learned is that she did not want the steamy details of her online chats with Anthony Weiner to become public and tried to limit what was published,” he said. “She said Radar Online printed those private discussions verbatim on what she called a flimsy pretext.”

So for Stateless Media it took coaxing to get her to agree to an interview. “It quickly became clear during our chat that she is still one of Anthony Weiner’s biggest fans,” he said. “She emphasized in our interview that she was sorry that she played a part in his political downfall. She wants to see him redeemed in politics and even said she would vote for him if she lived in New York.”

Why her as opposed to the others? “It was important that we include a female voice that was not repulsed by Weiner,” said Peter Savodnik, founder of Stateless Media. “It’s easy to find women who think Weiner is repugnant or creepy, but it’s more interesting to speak with someone who thinks there’s something alluring about him. That kind of perspective is unusual, and it casts a different sort of spotlight on Weiner’s personality and our ideas about him. And that is the real point of Stateless Media — to surprise constantly.”

What about the sex? “She was reluctant to talk about sex but eventually shared a few details about their racy chats,” said Bolton. “She said she was more entertained than turned on by their online exchanges. She would be doing laundry or watching TV while Weiner conjured X-rated scenes over his keyboard.

Did she have any regrets? “She seemed remorseful,” he said. “She apologized to Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, during our interview and said several times that she did not in any way intend to hurt Weiner by letting their conversations become public.”

What about her sincerity? “I think Lisa was very frank with me and I felt empathy for her for the intense scrutiny she endured because of her role in Weinergate,” he said.

Bolting from D.C. for a little while. “It was a great opportunity to get away from Washington’s perennial debates over budget cuts, ObamaCare and sequestration to cover the year’s most interesting political race,” he said, noting that he flew out to Vegas for just one night.

And how was it dealing with Weiner? “Even while Weiner’s poll standing sunk quickly, he remained a charismatic and unpredictable candidate. He has a real ability to connect with voters,” he said. “Somehow he remains charming even while he’s mocking you or displaying his characteristic braggadocio. He’s a talented politician, making the mistakes of his personal life all the more tragic. Unfortunately for him, it doesn’t look like he’ll follow in Bill Clinton’s footsteps as the Comeback Kid.”
