Last night on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” former White House press secretary Jay Carney joined as a guest while the show’s host read off several of Carney’s past responses to members of the WH Press Corps.
Referring to times he used, “No comment,” Carney told Letterman, “I tried to make it a complete sentence.” “The Late Show” host continued with several other non-answers the former Press Secretary occasionally provided and then delved into the freedom of the press.
“Well we do have freedom of the press, and reporters absolutely should come after to public officials and demand answers,” said Carney. “But there is, rightfully, a protected area of classified information, where if some public official decided to divulge that to a reporter, he or she is breaking the law.”
