Writing for TODAY.com, contributing correspondent Jenna Bush Hager offered an essay dedicated to her “Gampy,” President George H.W. Bush, with childhood photos including 41.

In the piece, she shares 5 things she’s learned from her grandfather, a man she says “has really always astonished me,” and reflects on his recent 90th birthday and skydive.

On the importance of service, Bush Hager recalls a 1997 letter he wrote on advice from his mother: “Be honest. Tell the truth. Be kind. Care about the other guy — help him. Don’t look down on anyone. You have an obligation to help others”
