Mike Allen: The FishbowlDC Interview

mikeallen1.jpgSay hello to the Politico’s Mike Allen, who is the first to take the updated and revised FishbowlDC Interview.

What word do you routinely misspell? Dude, you should have retired this question.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? “Profiles (Normal)” — a first for me.

What time did you get up this morning? I work for Jim VandeHei — early. We try to post “Politico Playbook,” our guide to what’s driving the day, by 7 or so.

When did you last cry and why? I’m lucky that most of my tears are happy. But it was tough to hear the coverage of “Pomp and Circumstance” at Tech this year. And Joseph Anzackk, father of one of the missing soldiers, on “Today”: “It just made me realize how much unfinished business that we have.”

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? I always send and get one too few. There’s someone who would have appreciated being reached out to, and there’s somebody who should have sent me something they didn’t!

What’s your favorite letter? Anything from Paul, but let’s go with Philippians.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? Ham Smith Charles Rowe Gail Nardi Michael Steele Ed Newland Len Downie Dan Balz Carl Lavin Drummond Ayres Al Siegal Nancy Sharkey Rick Berke Jim Kelly Rick Stengel Priscilla Painton Jay Carney Michael Duffy Nancy Gibbs Fred Ryan Robert Allbritton John Harris. No commas, so it’s a single, generous person.

When’s the last time you volunteered? Where? I’m fortunate to have the chance to mentor in Lincoln Heights, in Northeast D.C. I’ve learned there are very few bad kids, but lots of bored kids. Something as simple as a pick-up game or a trip to McDonald’s — half an hour — changes their week.
