Weekend birthdays: Campaigns & Elections’ Bill Beaman, NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Heritage’s Rob Bluey, Navigator Todd Harris. Also: Ray Bradbury, Morton Dean, H. Norman Schwarzkopf and Steve Kroft. Most of you think that Obama won’t pick Biden. Yesterday’s Playbook told us it was Joe Mathieu‘s birthday. CBS announced, “This weekend on SUNDAY MORNING — as he prepares for the Democratic National Convention in Denver — Chief Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer takes a look at political conventions past and present … the good, the bad and the just plain baffling. Schieffer also recounts some his own favorite experiences at the conventions, among them, getting a lesson in meditation from poet Allen Ginsberg in 1972.” TVNewser asks, “Does CNN Have a Challenger to its Best Political Team on Television?” Today’s “Angry Journalist” rant of the day: “I’m angry because the reporters I edit are more respected than I am, and half of them can’t write their way out of a paper fucking bag”.   • The AP reports, “In an Aug. 19 story about the Press Club of Dallas resuming a once prestigous journalism contest, The Associated Press, citing club officials, erroneously reported that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was among the Texas newspapers that agreed to participate. The Star-Telegram subsequently said it will not take part in this year’s Katie Awards, which were suspended in 2007 due to alleged judging irregularities.”

  • An ABC release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research for the week of August 11, 2008, ABC News’ ‘Nightline’ placed second for the sixth week in a row among the key Adults 25-54 demographic, outperforming CBS’ ‘Letterman.’ This marks ‘Nightline’s’ sixteenth victory over ‘Letterman’ among the key A25-54 demographic this season.”

  • A NBC release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research data, ‘Meet the Press’ was the most-watched Sunday morning public affairs program, winning the week ending Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008 in all categories. Due to Olympic programming, ‘Meet the Press’ had lower coverage of 89% and aired out of the usual time slot in many areas. The program was No. 1, averaging 3.233 million total viewers”.

  • A CNN release announced, “For all four days of the convention from Monday, Aug. 25, to Thursday, Aug. 28, CNN anchors Wolf Blitzer, Campbell Brown and Anderson Cooper, along with the Best Political Team on Television, will provide comprehensive insight and analysis during the network’s prime-time coverage, with Larry King wrapping up each day’s events at midnight. John Roberts in Denver and Kiran Chetry in CNN’s Election Center in New York will offer the most convention news in the morning on American Morning. Throughout the convention, CNN will operate sky booths as interview locations, production rooms and work space to accommodate CNN.com, CNN International, CNN Radio, CNN en Español, CNN Newsource, and TV Asahi.”

  • A release announced, “During the weekend of October 3rd-5th, The New Yorker will present its ninth annual Festival, a three-day series of events that brings together an eclectic array of writers, artists, actors, directors, musicians and politicians at venues throughout the city. This year’s Festival takes place one month before the Presidential election, and there will be a special emphasis on politics in the Festival’s programming, as well as a weekend-long voter-registration drive. In past years, Festival events have sold out quickly, drawing more than seventeen thousand people from around the world. The full program guide of fifty events will be included in the September 15, 2008, issue of the magazine, on newsstands September 8th, and will be available at http://festival.newyorker.com.”

  • Radar reports, “Soldiers at war rarely write magazine stories. But on July 13, 2007, a 24-year-old army private named Scott Thomas Beauchamp who had been serving in Iraq for about 10 months published a short, pseudonymous essay in the New Republic magazine that created a media firestorm.”

  • A Reporters Without Borders release announced, “Although Chinese police have attacked or manhandled around 10 foreign journalists since the start of the Beijing games, they were told not to obstruct the international press in directives sent to police stations at the end of July, of which Reporters Without Borders has obtained a copy. These directives nonetheless clearly instruct them to investigate the Chinese who talk to the foreign media, and another directive on 7 August (also obtained by Reporters Without Borders) orders them to deal quickly with religious demonstrations.” Read the directives on www.rsf.org
