MSNBC As “Liberal” … Some Thoughts …

  • As for the Times’ “MSNBC is leaning left” piece (which, trust us, is all network types are talking about this morning), we have to note this: If MSNBC doesn’t want to be seen as leftish, why this extensive listing of Democratic credentials for Matthews on its “Hardblogger” site?

Matthews spent 15 years in politics, working in the White House for four years under President Jimmy Carter as a Presidential speechwriter, as the top aide to Speaker of the House Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Jr. for six years and in the U.S. Senate for five years on the staffs of Senator Frank Moss (Utah) and Senator Edmund Muskie (Maine).

Does MSNBC want to accentuate Matthews’ Democratic street cred?

  • With Matthews appearing to be increasingly pegged by conservatives as a liberal, is this ruining any chance he has to eventually take over “Meet the Press” from Tim Russert (assuming Matthews wants it and is offered it)?

  • Considering that Jon Stewart recently told Matthews

STEWART: So you’re suggesting that the key to success for people is, even if no one believes a word you say, you can be successful.

      MATTHEWS: Yes.

…what will Stewart make of this Matthews quote:

“I really do take on people with power,” he said. “Deceit is what drives me crazy, either by Bill Clinton or the hawks in this administration.”
