New Hires At CQ

CQ Editor Mike Riley has a few new hires to announce this afternoon. Maura Reynolds joins CQ as a senior editor from the Washington bureau of the LA Times and Dayo Akinwande, previously at Morningside Partners, was named CQ Transcripts editor today.

Riley’s internal email announcing a few more future changes after the jump…

There are two new faces in the office today. Please welcome:

Maura Reynolds, who joins the staff of CQ Weekly as a senior editor. Maura spent the past six years in the Washington bureau of the Los Angeles Times covering the White House, Congress and the economy. She previously spent more than five years as a correspondent in Moscow, first with the Associated Press and then with the L.A. Times. (She was a Pulitzer finalist in foreign reporting in 2001.) Before that she was an editor on the AP international desk in New York.

Dayo Akinwande, who joins the newsroom as our new CQ Transcripts editor. Dayo comes to us from Morningside Partners, where he edited financial transcripts. Prior to that, Dayo did some entertainment writing for The Post’s Express, handled some research and reports for a marketing company and did some editing for Georgetown’s Research News. Dayo has worked as a music reviewer, and he recently completed his first novel.

It’s worth pointing out that CQ’s hiring editors (with the help of training director Jodi Schneider) have been on a roll, with high-profile hires that include:

Sarah Thibodeaux, who joined the editorial product development team in March. In the past 12 years, Sarah has worked on the editorial and technology sides of online news organizations. She played a leadership role at Advance.com (the Internet side of the Newhouse newspaper chain). She also was a manager at CondeNet, the web side of CondeNast publications. From 2002-07, she was production manager of Nola.com in New Orleans. As one of three key Nola.com managers who did heroic work during and after Hurricane Katrina, she earned a piece of two Pulitzer Prizes.

Jane Norman, who became the new associate editor of CQ HealthBeat in March. Jane covered the Iowa congressional delegation from 1998 to 2008 as a Washington correspondent for the Des Moines Register. For 20 years, she wrote a weekly column analyzing news events in Washington from an Iowa perspective, first for the Register and most recently for Iowapolitics.com.

Leslie Hoffecker, who joins us as news editor for CQ Today on April 15th. Leslie’s most recent work experience was in the Washington Bureau of the Los Angeles Times, where she spent seven years as an assistant national editor, assigning and editing late-breaking Washington news. Her journalism background includes a stint as Kansas City stringer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and 10 years in a variety of editing roles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Serdar Tumgoren, who joins us April 27th as the new database editor for CQ MoneyLine. Serdar has been a reporter for the Bergen Record in New Jersey, and at a newspaper in California prior to that, specializing in data-driven investigative reporting projects. He’s been active in NICAR, the computer-assisted reporting branch of the Investigative Reporters and Editors organization.

Sarah Vanderbilt, who joins us May 1st as our new graphics reporter. Sarah has a B.A. in history from Yale University, where she graduated cum laude last May and where she was managing editor of the Yale Herald. She also was the winner of the Block Fellowship at Yale, which funded her position as a staff writer at the New Haven Independent last summer. Since then, Sarah has worked as a press intern in a couple of Senate offices.
