NJ‘s top brass continually say that the mission leading up to the website roll out in October is to become a “digital first” news organization. Today the publication announced the hire of David Beard as Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Online Editor. Beard comes from Boston.com, which is now the 8th biggest newspaper site in the nation as of August (Nielsen), measured by unique users. Boston.com, the website of the Boston Globe, attracts between 180 million to 200 million page views a month.
Under his reign, Boston.com has received accolades such as a Webby for The Big Picture, a photography blog.

Prior to editing Boston.com: Beard was an assistant managing editor, regional editor and deputy foreign editor of the Globe and covered the Caribbean and Latin America for South Florida’s Sun-Sentinel and the AP. He also worked at the AP’s International Desk in New York, as well as in Mississippi and Argentina.
Backgrounder: Beard is a Pennsylvania native and graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He later earned an Inter American Press Association fellowship in Argentina. David and his wife, Gail Friedman, have two sons, Eric and Jordan.
