NPR: Now Hiring

If you’re looking for a job in media in Washington, it’s not too much of a stretch to say that NPR is one of the only games in town. At least, they’re one of the only ones expanding and hiring thanks to a $200 million gift from McDonalds heir Joan Kroc

“I wouldn’t call it a binge,” newly appointed VP for New Bill Marimow tells Harry Jaffe. “I would call it significant growth.”

Jaffe explains: The NPR news operation has added 50 journalists in the past three years, raising the total from 350 to 400. Ten years ago NPR had six foreign bureaus; it just opened its 16th, in Shanghai, putting it in the running with major national news organizations. The New York Times and CNN both have 26, the Los Angeles Times has 22, the Washington Post has 19.”

The network is becoming a place for “recovering newspapermen,” including, with Marimow’s new post, all of the senior management.
