NYT Reshuffles in D.C.
The New York Times Washington bureau, which has had a rough go of it in the last six weeks, is reshuffling in the wake of the “departure” of Washington editor Kate Phillips.
Instead of one, there shall be three:
“I’m pleased to announce–or knowing the reporting standards you set for yourselves, to confirm–the appointment of three deputy bureau chiefs: Rebecca Corbett for enterprise, Doug Jehl for national security coverage and Dick Stevenson for domestic and economic affairs and politics,”
bureau chief Philip Taubman wrote today.
Of course, if recent news is any indication, what he means by “given the reporting standards you set for yourself” is that the New York Times internally made the appointments in late 2004, then sat on them for nearly a year until some forthcoming staff-written book project may or may not have revealed the new appointments. Thus, today’s formal last-minute announcement before the news had a chance to break elsewhere.
That seems to be today’s Times.
