Plame Blame Game: Week in Review

Today marks the fifth day the White House will face some tough questions on Karl Rove‘s involvement in the Valerie Plame leak investigation, and with William Rehnquist’s announcement last night that he’s sticking around at least one potential subject-changer won’t hit. The big news today is the NYT’s story on Rove’s phone call with Robert Novak.

There won’t be a White House gaggle or a briefing today because the President is on the road, but spokesperson Trent Duffy will face some questions aboard Air Force One today anyhow.

Here’s a recap of the week:

Monday: Michael Isikoff blows the story wide-open and Scott McClellan faces his toughest day of questions ever.

Tuesday: The press corps sensed “blood in the water” as the questioning went into its second day.

Wednesday: By the third day, the story was getting almost Aruba-like coverage from some of the networks, and as it seeped into newsroom theatrics it was clear the story was sticking around. As Matt Cooper faced the grand jury, McClellan got battered again.

Thursday: As he got hit again on Air Force One, a quick examination of how McClellan escapes questions and the big question hanging over McClellan: Will he survive this? You can also learn some of the broader history and speculation in Fishbowl’s Washingtonpost.com chat yesterday.

Then, of course hanging over everything, there’s the pesky little question of whether there’s a crime here at all.
