POTUS and Jon Stewart: A Match Made in Heaven (Without Colbert)

Time.com’s Swampland blog, written by Michael Scherer, may be seriously gaming to get a Swampland mention on Colbert. Today Scherer reports that President Obama wants to do Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart but would rather not do “The Colbert Report.”

The reason?

The formidable Stephen Colbert. (Could that -nudge, nudge- be a challenge to Colbert to wage an invitation war with Obama?)

For now, forget about the economy, Dick Cheney, the underwear bomber, Jersey Shore, the Salahis or any of the other golden nuggets we write about here in Washington, Scherer walked into Spokesman Robert Gibbs’s office today to ask him a most pressing question. After bantering about the increased presence of Leno and Letterman in our political watching lives he went for it: Does POTUS wants to do “The Daily Show”?

Gibbs was up for the light-hearted query and told Scherer: “I think the President would love to, just maybe not Colbert.” He went on:”I have yet to see a politician best Stephen Colbert in an interview on his show,” Gibbs said, laughing. “I mean, he’s really, really good.”

Scherer considers himself a matchmaker. “So there you have it,” he wrote. “My role as matchmaker is now complete. Jon Stewart, you should make a phone call. Gibbs is on the record. The President of the United States wants to do your show.”
