How Reuters Handles Profanity

Media outlets have different ways of handling profanity in stories. Some use dashes. Others stars. Reuters? They put it all out there right up front in large bold letters. And then they use the actual swear word — fuck, as in “fuck you” –  in the story.

In the story, they write about ABC’s Jim Avila having a heated exchange with an agriculture food safety consultant, David Theno, in which Avila says something many reporters have in the course of interviews. The line in paragraph 41: ‘”He said, ‘fuck you’ and hung up on me again,’ Theno said.”
