Sinclair’s New D.C. Face Raises Ire
Don Hammond, the new Washington bureau chief for Sinclair Broadcasting, is already stirring up trouble on Capitol Hill.
Roll Call reports that at a news conference yesterday, Hammond asked John Kerry about his war record and repeatedly referred to Maria Cantwell as “ma’am” rather than “Senator.” At a press conference about the environment, Cantwell’s press secretary finally grabbed Hammond’s arm and said, “The next time you refer to Senator Cantwell, it’s ‘Senator’ not ‘ma’am.’” Hammond then changed gears, and started to ask Kerry a non sequitor about his war record before he was quieted by boos from the crowd.
Post-press conference staffers confronted Hammond and demanded to see his congressional press pass (leading Hammond to tell Roll Call he thought was going to be arrested), and although he doesn’t have one currently, it appears there is an application pending as of this week.
Likening Hammond to another Jeff Gannon, Kerry’s spokesman told Roll Call, “You could almost hear the black helicopters buzzing overhead as he fumbled to fake a question.”
