Sunday Morning Show Quotes – 8.17.14

Gov. Jay Nixon (D-MO) on “This Week” on the situation in Ferguson: ”The overmilitarization, the IMRAPs rolling in, the guns pointed at kids in the street, all of that I think instead of ratcheting down, brought emotion up. And that’s why I made the unique decision to bring in our highway patrol, to have a local leader, Captain Johnson from that community in that community, which he has been, and to put a much different face on law enforcement there, and I think it has paid off while respecting and allowing the appropriate first amendment rights for people to grieve and to speak.”

Gov. Nixon on “Meet the Press” on surveillance video being released: “Yeah. Everyone can rest well assured that we’ve had very serious discussions about that action and how much we felt that it was not the right way to handle the victim’s family, which I had a chance to speak with. They were deeply troubled. And when you see your son gunned down in the street and then you see a police chief begin an attempt to attack his character…That’s just not the way to operate. And we’ve made that clear to everyone. And our hope and expectation is that now that our folks are in charge of security, and we have these dual investigations going on, that, that bump is behind us, hopefully.”

Gov. Nixon on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on the situation in Ferguson: ”So we’re hopeful that we’re making progress. I think it’s right for people to grieve; I think it’s right for people to speak. And it’s important that we get justice in this matter, and the dual investigations being done by the local prosecutor and Justice will come to their conclusion.”

The Huffington Post’s Ryan Reilly on his arrest and assault by officers in Ferguson on “Reliable Sources” : “Any journalist who was in that situation, any good journalist who was in that situation, the exact same thing would have happened to them. I’m 100 percent sure of that. I didn’t — we did nothing wrong in that circumstance. We were allowed to record. We were obeying officer’s commands and trying to get out of the restaurant as quickly as possible while still documenting the sort of extraordinary measures that they were taking and the attitude they had towards the customers in that McDonald’s.”
