How it progressed…

New York magazine reported on the incident the day after SOTU last week, calling Cohen’s tweets “flirty.” And reasonably so. The whole thing was like a replay of the Anthony Weiner scandal, minus boner shots. “Happy Valentines beautiful girl. [I love you]” was among the tweets sent to Brink by Cohen.

Feeding into the weirdness was Cohen’s flack, Michael Pagan, who told New York that Brink is “the daughter of a longtime friend” of Cohen’s and that Cohen has “known her pretty much her whole life.”

Judy Kurtz and Alexandra Jaffe at The Hill double bylined a story that ran a little more than an hour later with very similar content to New York‘s, with additional details on Brink being a college student and aspiring model. Kurtz and Jaffe got a link from the Drudge Report.

The Free Beacon wrote up the story, calling Brink a “groupie” that “hollered” at Cohen.

Later that evening, RedState asked if Cohen was “schtupping his buddy’s daughter?”

It wasn’t until NBC’s Luke Russert swooped in on a white horse (a very large horse) to make the big reveal: “Cohen (D-Tenn.) tells me woman he tweeted during SOTU is in fact his daughter, he only learned of her 3 yrs ago,” Russert wrote on Twitter.

The next day, WaPo‘s Reliable Source column reported on the entire matter linking to nothing but other WaPo stories. (Why not make it look like you rolled in late as usual or that you didn’t actually break the story?)

Tough to say. But Abdul left last night’s V magazine party in the bowels of Washington’s Kalorama neighborhood just 10 minutes after the party started. A petite woman dressed in black from head to toe, Abdul came, barely looked up and left so fast that even the sparse early crowd barely noticed she was there. That is, until she was gone.

In her defense, Abdul was on fairly vigorous party schedule. Before the V party, she attended The Creative Coalition’s “Night Before Dinner” at Mari Vanna DC.

Sponsored by Veuve Clicquot and Belvedere Vodka, guests at the V party enjoyed the alcohol and fare as well as peering into the indoor swimming pool inside the quirky home of D.C. Architect Arthur Keyes. Some partygoers thought it resembled “Brady Bunch” house. Later in the evening singer John Legend showed up with an attractive woman in a long red dress.

Throughout the evening a procession of important looking people walked in. “Who is that woman in the red dress?” a male partygoer asked about a different woman in a different red dress. An extremely thin woman in black lace was also the subject of many side conversations.

The Hill‘s Alexandra Jaffe broke the news yesterday that Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) was distancing himself from remarks made by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. “As someone who grew up in tough circumstances, I know that being on public assistance is not a spot that anyone wants to be in,” Brown told The Hill. He was referring to Romney’s recently surfaced comments that labeled “47 percent” of Americans as people who feel “entitled” to government benefits.

Jaffe’s story was picked up by HuffPost, Political Wire and Politico, all of which attributed The Hill for breaking it.

The AP also picked it up.

Shortly after Jaffe’s story broke, AP reporter Steve LeBlanc wrote the same story, correctly paraphrasing Brown’s quotes. What was missing, however, was any attribution to The Hill.

LeBlanc’s story was updated later with actual quotes from Brown, the same quotes from Jaffe’s story. But LeBlanc’s article attributed them to a statement from Brown’s office. The first version of his story did not attribute to any statement.

The Boston Herald‘s Hillary Chabot wrote the same story, attributing the same quotes to a statement. NYT did the same.

We requested comment from the AP media relations, LeBlanc and Chabot. A publicist is looking into it.

We’ve also sought comment from Brown’s campaign office to clarify if they sent out a statement with the same quotes after The Hill‘s story was published. But even if that is the case, the paraphrased version of LeBlanc’s story still did not cite The Hill for breaking the news.
