Sunday Morning Panels: Only Males Need Apply

Hide the toddlers. We’re counting up the number of trouser snakes on the Sunday morning political talk show panels again this week and the picture is actually significantly hopeful. Program note: CNN’s “State of the Union” with Candy Crowley is pre-empting Howie’s “Reliable Sources” so that program will not be included in our weekly roundup. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews has a panel that’s 50 percent female as usual. Enjoy!

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: 1

This week NBC’s “MTP” is broken into three segments. The First is Herman Cain, then Gov.’s Bobby Jindal and Tim Pawlenty and finally NBC’s Chuck Todd and BBC’s Katty Kay. We’re considering the last panel as the one to most comparably count.

ABC’s “This Week”: 2

ABC’s Jonathan Karl, Ruth Marcus, WaPo, GOP pundit Mary Matalin, WaPo‘s George Will

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: 2

Norah O’Donnell, CBS News Chief White House Correspondent
John Dickerson, CBS News Political Analyst
Julianna Goldman, White House Correspondent, Bloomberg Television

(Also significant to note that Sharyl Attkisson, CBS News Investigative Correspondent, will be a guest.)

FNC’s “Fox News Sunday”: Proudly blacklisted by Fox News PR since June 2010. We’ll update this when we hunt it down.

WETA’s “Washington Week With Gwen Ifill and NJ” (Airs on Friday, repeats on Saturday): 2

Karen Tumulty, WaPo, Michael Duffy, TIME
Alexis Simendinger, RCP
James Kitfield, NJ

NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show”: 2

Joe Klein, TIME
Major Garrett, NJ
Katty Kay, BBC
Nia-Malika Henderson, WaPo

Quotes of the Day

Goff admits to major coffee drinking

“DC ranks 6th city that drinks the most #coffee accord to Bundle.com. I alone prob acct for half the city #fillherup.” — NBC Washington anchor Angie Goff.

Is Real Clear Politics Taking Washington by storm?

“Real Clear Politics…which is the vastly escalating website of political writing that is really taking over Washington. Everybody seems to read it.” — WETA “White House Chronicle Host” and syndicated columnist Llewellyn King while introducing White House Correspondent Alexis Simendinger to the program this weekend.

Baratunde breaks down over overhead bin mishap

“Been 10 mins since we were booted from our flight because jackass broke the overhead. Amazingly, he’s still alive #GateCheckGate #mobrage” — Director of Digital for The Onion Barantunde Thurston, who was stuck in the Louisville airport over the weekend. “Jackass forced his bag into overhead, breaking the unit and forcing a delay on our flight. #selfish #finishhim!” See the busted overhead bin here.

D. Shuster’s fan club (of sorts)

“David Shuster looked yummy on CNN today… even more delicious given how he ripped Fox News debate moderators for their stupidity.  Me likey!” — Anonymous reader to FishbowlDC.

Ezzy offers lunch. Down with Herman Cain!

“If Herman Cain ends this primary with more than 10 percent of the vote, I will buy everyone on this panel lunch. It will not happen.” — WaPo‘s Ezra Klein on fellow Boybander Chris Hayes‘s “Up with Hayes” on Sunday morning on MSNBC. This was in reaction to Cain winning the Florida Straw Poll. Seems pizza would be a good choice here. Hazy replied, “We’re going to pick the nicest four-star restaurant.”

Hair cut alert…“Nooooo!” — The Daily Caller‘s Mary Katharine Ham to colleague Laura Donovan, who wrote: “OMG @cjciaramella cut his hair and beard!” So who is sending us a picture?? CJ Ciaramella is a relatively new hire. This picture is obviously pre-haircut.

Most insightful line of WaPo Date Lab. Josh: “We definitely hugged, I felt much closer to her after the date than before.” Josh, who will no doubt make a brilliant lawyer one day, and Natalie were strangers before the date.

Atlantic Media Event : Journos & Politicos Reflect on SOTU

atlantic klobuchar.jpg

This morning at Union Station, The Atlantic and National Journal hosted a panel discussion about the impact of the President’s SOTU address last night. Atlantic Media’s Political Director Ron Brownstein was joined by a journalists panel including John Harwood, Alexis Simendinger, and Eugene Robinson.

atlantic dan.jpg

Political guests included Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA), WH Dir. of Comm. Dan Pfeiffer and one lone Republican – Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).

While Klobuchar and Cornyn kept it cool, Rep. Becerra spent much of his stage time finger-pointing at the Senate for the health care bottleneck, claiming “the House has a plan that will work but we need a little help from our friends in the Senate.” Becerra was also quick to criticize Republicans for not standing to applaud President Obama’s mention of tax cuts for small business.

Pfeiffer, who closed the series said the Address was not meant to signal a “reset” rather, “it was a robust explanation of where we are and where we need to be.” On Senator-elect Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts? Pfeiffer sees it as a very anti-Washington sentiment, not as affirmation of the Republican brand.

State of the Union Debriefed
