CNN Renews ‘Parts Unknown’ and Two Others Shows

595e5a2f-c809-48bc-9441-bf1680134724_800

Now, I know that this isn’t a DC story, or even a political one. However, as a huge fan of the man and the show (as I am sure many of you are), I am thrilled to be the 3,823,159th person to announce that CNN has picked up its original program “Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown” for a fifth season.

From Russia to Iran, Bourdain has taken his audience to places some of us only dream, or fear, to go. His adventures have helped bridge gaps between cultures, and opened our eyes to a world much more complex than we often believe.

Good luck in your new adventures, Tony, we’ll be watching. Oh, and the more Zamir Gotta, the better.

“This is Life with Lisa Ling,” and “Somebody’s Gotta Do it with Mike Rowe were also picked up by the network, but I don’t watch those yet. Sue me.

Next episode: Jamaica. Sunday, November 16 at 9pm ET/PT

DC Bureau Spared In Latest Round of CNN Layoffs

cnnAfter a quiet culling at their Washington bureau back in June, CNN has made another round of layoffs -this time at it’s New York, LA, and Atlanta bureaus. The cuts come as new President Jeff Zucker is seeking to revamp CNN in his own vision. Key reforms Zucker has instituted so far include a revival of DC-based “Crossfire,” and bringing on non-traditional talent such as Anthony Bourdain and Morgan Spurlock. CNN Films has also made a splash under Zucker with the release of its documentary Blackfish about the atrocious living condition of captive killer whales, which has won widespread attention on the Internet and has even been credited with tanking SeaWorld’s stock value. It’s unclear if even more personnel changes are in the offing.

CNN Brings Stroumboulopoulos Into Fold

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos isn’t the only newsman who gets to have a distinctive surname. Now he has competition — at least in the surname department — as  CNN welcomes popular Canadian talk show host George Stroumboulopoulos to its Friday lineup.

“Stroumboulopoulos” will premiere on Sunday, June 9th at 10pm ET following the season finale of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown.” On June 14th the show will air in its regular time slot, which is Fridays at 11pm.

Stroumboulopoulos’ first guests will be rapper Wiz Khalifa, actress Ellen Page and Walking Dead comic book author Robert Kirkman. Viewers can also expect “compelling” interviews with Keanu Reeves, Martin Short, Betty White, Bill Maher, Sharon Stone, author Eckhardt Tolle, and filmmaker Werner Herzog.

The show will tape in front of a live audience in Los Angeles.

Anthony Bourdain to Hang at CNN’s D.C. Bureau

Things are looking up for CNN’s Anthony Bourdain, who hosts “Anthony Bordain Parts Unknown.” The network has picked up the show for another season. Tonight he’ll grace CNN’s Washington bureau for the first time to sign books and take pictures with the staff and the talent.

Then he’s off to DAR Constitution Hall, where he’ll host “Guts and Glory With Anthony Bourdain.” The evening will center on the host’s gastronomic escapades around the globe and what really goes on behind kitchen doors. As described by the Ticketmaster website, “Bourdain will cover current controversial issues in the gastronomic world and dish on hot topics as only he can.”

(A Sprinkling of Food Things we Think you Ought to Know…)

Can Bourdain Save CNN? – Amid the struggling ratings that CNN is facing, there may be a glimmer of hope and, perhaps, a move in an edgier direction for the news network. They have announced that Anthony Bourdain will join the network with his own weekend TV show starting in early 2013. Bourdain will also serve as a network contributor. This means that Bourdain’s current show, “No Reservations”, on the Travel Channel will be going away. Bourdain is expected to give Wolf Blitzer a run for his money in the annual CNN swearing competition.

Chris Wallace Continues Choking His Chicken – We have written before about the cookbook by Lorraine Wallace, wife of Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace. It’s a cookbook of chicken recipes since Chris will eat only chicken on the Saturday nights before his “Fox News Sunday” broadcast. Serious Eats has announced that they are doing a week-long “Cook the Book” series. They’ll be sharing recipes handpicked by Lorraine and they are giving away five copies of the book. So, if you were interested in some Chicken and Cashews in Lettuce Cups or Skewers of Sage Chicken with Sweet Italian Sausage, it’s your lucky day.

Eat Like a POTUS – We are finally able to buy a copy of the new cookbook by FLOTUS entitled “American Grown.” It looks at the White House garden and kitchen and gives several new, healthy recipes. (What? You thought she was going to have a recipe for T-Bone steaks smothered in deep fried Twinkies and butter?) In this piece from Yumsugar, we learn some of POTUS’s favorite dishes around the White House. They include broccoli soup, chili with bacon (!!!!), and fruit and oatmeal bars.

Schumer Wants to Keep Us From Eating Lead – To take advantage of one of the biggest grilling days of the year, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is asking the FDA to look into the dangers of grill brushes. The metal brushes used to clean off grill grates have led to a handful of incidents where the metal bristles come off the brush and into the throats of diners. Never one to over-dramaticize, Schumer went so far as to say, “”Metal bristles are one topping no one wants on their burger this holiday season.”
