Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day – the Sausage Fest Edition

Question to Ponder: “If President actually creates a Secretary of Business post, will the acronym for it be: “SOB?” Bad jobs #’s? Blame that SOB!” — YG Action Fund’s Brad Dayspring, former flack to House Maj. Leader Eric Cantor.

More Karl Rove election night fallout

“Wow, Rove’s new line is that Obama suppressed the vote. #intervention #sympathy#mentalhealth” — TPM‘s Josh Marshall.

“This is some creative spin : Fox News: Karl Rove Argument Proves His ‘Value’ To Network.” — QGA and former Senate flack Jim Manley.

The scriptwriter

“If this were The West Wing, Obama would right now be arranging the secret meeting where he would offer Romney the Secretary of Business job.” — Logan Dobson, research analyst at The Tarrance Group, a Republican polling firm.

Cheech!

“No joke: I’m at the security line at JFK. Cheech just walked up behind me. I might turn around and say, “Denver?” — MSNBC’s “The Cycle” S.E. Cupp.

WTF: Can’t you people listen?

“People: To reiterate, I CAN’T reset my password for this acct b/c it is linked to an email acct that no longer exists.” — Liz Mair, GOPround advisory board member.

A lunch order to remember

“To the cute gay server at my lunch place: stop complimenting the lady customers on their hair and look at ME!” — The Guardian‘s Matthew Wells.

First World Problems?

“My eye doctor is out-of-network. THANKS OBAMA.” — HuffPost‘s Arthur Delaney.

Karl Rove is ‘Gross Egg That Has a Head Cold’

If you haven’t watched Karl Rove attempt to throw a giant rotten peach at Fox News’ election coverage Tuesday night, do yourself a favor and watch it here, thanks to Politico.

Rove had predicted that Mitt Romney would handily win the presidential election and threw a toddler-sized tantrum when it started to look like he was wrong. Fox News called Ohio for Barack Obama and instead of commenting on the win, Rove stabbed Fox News in the back by saying that they were calling it prematurely. It. Was. Awkward. It got so weird that Megyn Kelly got up, left the set, and went back into the bowels of Fox News to talk to the Decision Desk, a crew of smart white men navigating the numbers.

Naturally, Rove’s performance elicited reaction from journalists and here we give you the best offerings… continued…

Quotes of the Day

CNN Producer for Piers Morgan Tonight Brad Parks: “Passing time between live shots at the CNN Grill photo booth.”

Mrs. Ralph Reed to Convention Security: Lighten up!

“When I lived in Iran growing up & we were under martial law…security was not as bad as it is at the @GOPconvention!!! Geez…lighten up!!” — Jo Anne Reed, wife of Ralph Reed.

Taxicab Confessions: Tampa

“My cabbie in Tampa is singing along to ‘Do That To Me One More Time’ while we sit in traffic. Kinda awkward.” — The Hill‘s Howeesha Kurtz, a.k.a. Judy Kurtz.

Uh oh. Is HuffPost‘s Arthur Delaney okay? “I’m drunk and lonely.” — HuffPost‘s Arthur Delaney. Labor journo for InTheseTimes.com Mike Elk replied, “Call me maybe?” HuffPost‘s Amanda Terkel apparently borrowed <del>stole</del> Delaney’s gadget and tweeted the following: “At a wings place in a Ramada, next to a strip club. Take that, fancy parties.”

Journo gives lip to TODAY Show

“Shut up Today Show.” — The Hill‘s Alexandra Jaffe to the TODAY Show. On Monday, TODAY ran a segment on mirror fasts. This means, as they explain it, “foregoing looking at yourself in the mirror for a week, a month, even a year.”

Reporter Starstruck by NBC’s David Gregory

“Just walked by @davidgregory. #StarStruck Saw that dude on TV yesterday morning.#GOP2012” — D.C. Correspondent for MedPageToday.com David Pittman, who clearly needs to have his head examined. Psst….Pittman, Gregory is not a celebrity. MedPage Today provides medical news for clinician. Is there a clinician in the house?

Questions to Ponder: “When ratings show people tuning out of politics at record levels, why do cable channels think 24-7 convention coverage is a good idea?” — Salon‘s David Sirota. And from Columbia J School’s Emily Bell: “Given there are a lot of journalists covering the #RNC who is actually producing interesting coverage? (serious question)”

Convo Between Actor Rob Lowe and CNN’s Piers Morgan

Lowe: “What does it mean, if anything, that the Fox News crawl is so much slower than CNN?”

Morgan: “Means we’re quicker, smarter.”

Ouch! “Hey @JoeNBC: Any time you want to man up and take control of your own show would be nice. #Coward” — Breitbart.com editor John Nolte, showing that it’s not just the MSM that gets whacked by the conservative media outlet.

HuffPost Howard Fineman‘s admission: “I rarely if ever get in shouting matches on TV but did on @hardball_chris just now with former GOP chm Steele about the Romney welfare ad.”

How to Win Friends and Influence People at the RNC: “Convention Coverage Rule #2115: Condescend to other reporters by not admitting to having read ‘their take’ from last night.” — Politico‘s Patrick Gavin.

How to irk Politico‘s Ben White: “Whiny Tweets complaining about too many journalists covering too little news in Tampa are not wrong, they are just boring.” He later added, “How do Floridians and other swing-staters tolerate all these political ads? I’d throw my TV out the window.”

Boybander Revelations…“Thing I learned today: Reince Priebus reads the sarcastic things you write about him.” — Slate‘s Dave Weigel. And from TPM‘s Brian Beutler: “I wish politicians really would speak in dog whistles so I’d be incapable of hearing their garbage.”

Public Admiration Society: “Great line from @RonBrownstein: ‘Very patriotic convention — the floor is red, the seats are blue, and the delegates are white.’” — The New Yorker‘s Ryan Lizza quoting National Journal‘s Ron Brownstein.

NYT’s Carl Hulse Rocks the House

Over the weekend, The Native Makers, the rock band featuring Carl Hulse on the drums, rocked Capitol Hill in an event labeled Rock and Roll Apocalypse. Hulse, the NYT Deputy Bureau Chief, ripped through a series of cover songs at the 18th Amendment on Capitol Hill. The playlist leaned heavily on the Rolling Stones and other classic rock favorites. In a bizarre stage setup, the band was forced to play directly beneath a giant TV playing a “Rocky” movie marathon. The howls of Grateful Dead cover songs provided a very unique soundtrack to Rocky Balboa’s defeat of Clubber Lang.

Jamming in the crowd were WSJ’s Neil King with his wife, Shalaigh Murray , who is now communications director for VPOTUS. Also spotted: HuffPost’s Arthur Delaney, WaPo’s Mike DeBonis and Susan G. Komen’s Kiki Ryan with Tim Burger. Quinn Gillespie & Associates was well repped with both John Feehery and Jim Manley in attendance in a marked sign of bipartisanship.

Arthur Delaney Scissorhands

As we told you this morning, there’s a reporter in town who cuts his own locks. It’s none other than HuffPost‘s Arthur Delaney.

Delaney tells me he has largely been his own stylist for the past decade. “It’s why I look like such an idiot,” he joked (though some of his colleagues insist otherwise…).

(Unfortunately, this is the largest photograph we could find, but you get the general idea of his hairdo.)

The Journolist Bloodbath Continues; HuffPost Strikes Out at Daily Caller

Dirt is flying over The Daily Caller’s revealing stories on the contents of the Journolist listserv. HuffPost, which has ex-Journolisters in its midst and has employees who have been staunch defenders of the list’s privacy (the harshest defenders have included Jason Linkins and Arthur Delaney who have never said they were members of the listserv), is striking back against The Daily Caller, saying it should have disclosed having one of its own on Journolist.

After WaPo‘s Ezra Klein outed former Daily Caller reporter Gautham Nagesh in a story this morning, Sam Stein, a political reporter for HuffPost, admits that he, too, was on Journolist. He describes Nagesh’s personality on the listserv as “wonkish.” Nagesh left The Daily Caller in April and now works at The Hill. The first wave of the Journolist story broke on FishbowlDC on June 24 and then on The Daily Caller on June 25.

Stein wrote, “What the Daily Caller never mentioned is that they were part of it too. At least for a short period of time.” (Note: Nagesh was on Journolist, not The Daily Caller as a publication.)

Nagesh told Stein: “I joined Journolist after [it was exposed in a Politico article] hoping to get an inside view of the left wing media conspiracy,” he told the Huffington Post. “And unfortunately all I found was a wonkish listserv of like-minded people discussing topics that interested them. I found it extremely useful for putting me in contact with sources and exposing me to a side of the blogosphere I wasn’t well connected with.” (Read the full post here.)

Nagesh spoke with FishbowlDC just moments ago and said he was surprised, but not upset that Klein outed him for being on the list.”I wouldn’t say upset,” he said. “It was an interesting way to start the morning. I don’t think it was out of bounds.”

On Klein: “He mentioned that I was on Journolist while working for The Daily Caller,” he said. “I knew Sam was going to write an article. Ezra did not write me. I have since spoken to him. He basically said that none of us has any privacy at this point and to be honest, that’s probably correct.”

Nagesh says he keeps his politics private. “Most of the time I was on Journolist I was covering technology — it’s not exactly a partisan issue,” he said. “I don’t associate myself with any political interest…I consider myself one of those old fashioned reporters.”

When asked for his opinion on whether The Daily Caller should have informed its readers that he was on the listerv while working there, he had none. “I honestly don’t know,” he said. “I don’t talk to anyone there about the work that they are doing.”

FishbowlDC asked Nagesh if he was the original leaker of Journolist’s e-mails. He said, “No, I did not give the e-mails to FishbowlDC or The Daily Caller.”

Note: Comment from Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson has been requested on this matter. The Daily Caller’s Publisher Neil Patel has declined to comment.

A Response to Weigel Resignation Aftermath

By now, you know that Dave Weigel and the WaPo have parted ways. And by now, you may or may not be aware of the heavy criticism (and more privately, praise) that FishbowlDC has received for first publishing e-mails from Weigel to the private email listserv, Journolist.

MSNBC Keith Olbermann has named me among his “Worst Persons in the World.” I was called “Fishbowl F-ck” and a “scumbag” (HuffPost’s Jason Linkins). I was called “sleazy” and “skuzzy” and to DIAF (that would be die in a fire (HuffPost’s Arthur Delaney). I’ve been called a “hack” journalist. I’ve been told I’m the one who should be fired, not Weigel.

The criticisms are missing the mark, but like any journalist, I’m not above rebuke, so allow me here to address the critics:

1.) I have something against Weigel personally.

This is untrue. I had never met Weigel in person until Thursday night at a HuffPost party. We had exchanged a couple of e-mails in the past. He was icy. But I wasn’t surprised, hurt, or offended. A little background: Journalists have always had a love/hate relationship with FishbowlDC: Reporters love its inside-baseball, occasionally catty, sometimes serious look at the reporting world in D.C. But they hate it when they’re the ones getting covered unless it’s glowing. “Fishbowl is not supposed to be writing about [fill in the blank]” is a frequent defense when a reporter is asked for a response to something involving them. But it’s not that they don’t understand — they do — it’s just that they’re uncomfortable that our beat is them. Business reporters cover Wall Street. Military reporters cover Iraq and Afghanistan. FishbowlDC covers journalists.

So, Weigel is a journalist and it’s my job to cover him and hundreds of others in Washington. It’s understandable that Friends of Weigel (FOW’s) are defensive on the topic of his departure from WaPo. While the motives of the Journolist leaker are fair game for critique, my decision to publish them is me doing my beat dutifully. It’s business, not personal. That said…

2.) We shouldn’t have published the emails.

Yes, we should have (see above, it’s my job and my beat). Anyone who
thinks otherwise may not understand this: It’s not a reporter’s job to worry about the outcome of a genuine news story in that it may upset some people.

What’s noteworthy here is that the anger to publishing the e-mails is a selective anger. For instance: We’re not the only ones who have published private emails from Journolist. So, too, have respected journalists such as Salon’s Glenn Greenwald and Yahoo! News’s Michael Calderone, who wrote about Journolist while at Politico. In fact, they did it long before FishbowlDC did. Find out how TIME’s Joe Klein felt about having his listserv emails disclosed by Greenwald in 2009. Read Greenwald’s post. But what’s alarming here is they haven’t come under the same squall of ethical scrutiny as FishbowlDC has because, well, they’re all in the same protective bubble of friends (talk about a real life Fishbowl…). So, when HuffPost’s Linkins — displaying an apparent deep-thinking maturity — says of me and my co-editor Matt Dornic that we’re “Fishbowl F-cks” for our work and that “this is how scumbags launder their karma,” one has to wonder: Did he write about Greenwald and Calderone with a similar scathing bitterness? Of course not – they’re friends. He wrote that those not on #TeamWeigel are “sellouts, scumbags and bitchasses.” With such selective outrage, spare me lectures on journalistic integrity.

3.) I cost Weigel his job.

No, I didn’t. I didn’t write those messages to some 400 people on Journolist. I wasn’t in management meetings at WaPo when what to do with Weigel was discussed. My take on Weigel’s behavior as a journalist covering media: I don’t believe a reporter can hate those he or she covers and do it carefully or fairly. There are some who blame WaPo for Weigel’s behavior, but in the end, it’s Weigel who is responsible. But I’m not in charge of him. I wasn’t in charge of him. The aftermath? Out of my hands.

4.) FishbowlDC focused on this story for the traffic.

The reality is most websites worry about traffic. Like how you worry about earning a paycheck to pay bills. Or how you eat enough to sustain energy. Or that you breath enough so that you might not pass out. These are basics. But Wonkette claimed we are “trying to get some traffic for the long-ignored mediabistro blog by posting some banal crap from that ‘JournoList’ email group.” Salon’s Alex Pareene thinks the aim was to score a Drudge link. Traffic did, in fact, come our way because it was a genuine story. Traffic did, in fact, go Weigel’s way for it, too. Some may not have liked that someone leaked Weigel’s e-mails. Others may not have liked that WaPo parted ways with Weigel. But the notion that a reporter’s biases on his own beat are not grounds for a legitimate discussion here on FishbowlDC or anywhere else is short-sighted at best.

> Update: Apparently I’m not alone in my views. Read WaPo’s Ombudsman report by Andrew Alexander on the Weigel matter here. In addition, read Greenwald’s explanation of why he printed Klein’s e-mails back in 2009 here.

Secondly, a correction: HuffPost‘s Delaney didn’t say I should DIAF (die in a fire). That was another gem from his colleague, Linkins. What Delaney did say was this: “FishbowlDC takes a break from sucking up to DC media types to cost a guy his job.” He also called our posts “jackass sanctimony.” A little over an hour later, he apparently felt badly and said over Twitter, “I should say FishbowldDC didn’t cost @daveweigel his job, since they’re reporting what they’re getting from whoever’s got it in for him.”

Say Hello to Evening With ‘HuffPost Hill’

The Huffington Post introduces a brand new feature today. It’s “HuffPost Hill”, a daily newsletter which aims to whisk readers into evening with a free, modern, e-mail version of an evening newspaper. It harkens back to an era that publication editors believe still ought to exist.

In the works for about a year, HuffPost unveils “HuffPost Hill” this evening, between 5p.m. and 6 p.m. daily, encapsulating the day’s missed events and the day ahead in a 2,000-word feature sent to your e-mail doorstep. It won’t be fancy graphically – no pictures, no graphics – the writing is meant to be lively and conversational with the promise of catchy headlines. Nora McAlvanah, former editor of NJ’s Wake-Up Call and Last Call, helped create it.

Content will be geared toward the Capitol Hill staffer, White House aide and anyone interested in that world. There will be news of unusually-themed fundraisers, embassy parties, free parties, Hill birthday celebrations, and who’s dating whom (as long as it’s someone we all care about).

HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington won’t say the feature is a take off Politico Mike Allen‘s “Playbook,” but she won’t run from the possibility. “I personally love reading Mike Allen in the morning,” Huffington told FishbowlDC last Friday, referring specifically to Allen’s “Playbook” feature that lands the publication a daily spot on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” She isn’t thinking too long-term about the feature, but she believe it’s important: “We used to have an afternoon newspaper,” she said of the newspaper industry.

Huffington said the writing needs to “lively and breezy”, and the “kind of stuff you talk about at dinner.” She said it won’t be just like Allen’s “Playbook” but will fill what they consider to be the afternoon gap.

National Editor Nico Pitney came up with the idea. At the helm of the operation is chief congressional correspondent Ryan Grim, who will edit the feature. “It’ll be like an evening newspaper [for people to] read on their way home,” said Grim.

Pitney will contribute to the project as will a variety of HuffPost scribes such as White House correspondent Sam Stein , K Street reporter Arthur Delaney, senior Washington correspondent Dan Froomkin and media editor Jason Linkins.

In Grim’s charges will be the newly hired Eliot Nelson, 23. Nelson has experience in satirical writing – which is what HuffPost appears to be looking for in this feature.

Pitney and Grim tested Nelson rigorously, giving him little guidance. They were pleased with the results, said Grim.

Nelson has worked for unknown online venues such as Yankee Pot Roast and McSweeny’s. He has interned at ABC News and Bloomberg and most recently, in the Whip office of South Carolina Democratic leader, James Clyburn.

Be My Friend Howie

At first, Howie Kurtz was itching to get friends on Facebook. Now, he’s upsetting some folks because he’s not accepting friends.

The Hill’s Arthur Delaney tells us that “Kurtz refuses to confirm facebook friendship” with him and this blogger also seems upset at the rejection.
