Atlantic’s New Health Channel Debuts Today

Today, TheAtlantic.com introduces the Health channel, a new section aimed at health and wellness. There will be six areas of coverage: mind, body, food, sex, family, and public health. Nicholas Jackson, who was named channel editor in September, will spearhead the section.

On the site this morning are stories about men and cancer (they don’t bother to get tested), dreams healing mental wounds, alcohol leads to unsafe sex (it happens) and more. In the alcohol/sex story, studies reveal that the more you drink (women, four drinks, men, five) the more likely you are to have sex without a condom.

Regular Health channel features will include:

  • Study of the Day: From surveys about teens and sexting to whether eating more fish improves your memory, the feature breaks down research studies and provides key takeaways about the findings.
  • Vital Signs: A compilation of data-driven, health-related figures culled from leading science and health journals, news reports, and the web.
  • The Cutting Edge: A daily feature dedicated to the latest advances in medical technology.

Programming notes…The Health channel replaces the Life channel, a section of the site that was devoted to health, as well as food, design, and sustainability. Health will include coverage of the food beat, with regular contributions from Corby Kummer, Atlantic senior editor and food critic; Marion Nestle, professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University; and Barry Estabrook, a former contributing editor at Gourmet magazine. Coverage of design will now live on the Entertainment channel, and coverage of green news and sustainability will be featured across the Technology and Business channels.

The Atlantic Launches ‘Life’ Channel

Just live moments ago, The Atlantic now has a Life channel. Think online magazine, not TV.

Think rapper Flavor Flav. He opened his new fried chicken restaurant in Clinton, Iowa on Monday and they were there to witness it. Watch out, there’s a KFC next door.

Subject matter includes Food, Health, Travel, Design and Green. The idea is to build on the magazine’s Food channel, which debuted two years ago under Corby Kummer. Associate Editor Daniel Fromson will edit “Life.” Kummer will assume an advisory role. “This might be the only place on the Web where, in the course of a single day, you could find writing from a butcher, a yogi, an architect, a green tech expert, and a renowned travel writer,” Fromson writes in his intro of the project today.

Today’s stories: Plums (stop eating them so you can save them); Flavor Fav Vs. KFC, the rise of women brewers, the next great cancer drug (runs twice because the kinks are still being worked out) and more.

Watch here.
