Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

Whose got the ugliest, most loathsome facial/neck/seeping into chest hair in America? Meet America’s non-journalist Ian Murphy, the Buffalo Beast’s prank caller who appeared on MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Wednesday night. Please, Murphy, buy a razor, this is terrifying.

Number of days since @DCJourno has tweeted: 9 (His/her last utterance was on FishbowlDC with this interview by intern Alec Jacobs. We don’t think Alec’s interview caused the disappearance, but we hope the anonymous D.C. tweeter will return soon.)

Tapper Block Watch

“This is spamming and if u keep doing it i will block you.” — ABC News White House Correspondent Jake Tapper to a follower named @Chani_11 Wednesday. Tapper is known for his no nonsense Twitter personality.

Prank on a prank

“Just got a call from David Koch. What does he want at this hour?:-)” — Syndicated columnist and Strategic Communications Strategist for Bullfight Strategies Karl Frisch in a Wednesday tweet.

Reporter wins the morning, noon & night

“Politico‘s @mollyesque wins the morning/noon/night with Vanity Fair shout-out for her lede about Reid and hookers.” — Politico Deputy Congressional Editor Martin Kady goes all out in a Wednesday tweet “Win the BLANK” analogy about reporter Molly Ball, linking to this.

“Man” panel

“Im the least manly person alive, but what the hell/RT@LetsTalkLiveDC We’re gearing up for a “Man Panel”w/Adrian Loving @Bkownacki & @PWGavin” — Politico‘s Patrick Gavin in a Wednesday tweet. Fellow man panel members are Brendan Kownacki (“media adviser, strategist, producer, commentator and self-proclaimed futurist”) and Adrian Loving (self-proclaimed DJ, “social stylist” and graphic design professor. In 2009 he told Washingtonian that he dances in front of the mirror daily.)

TBD fallout

“And, the next shoe drops at @tbd: major layoff.” — Former TBD GM Jim Brady in a Wednesday tweet.

“TBD has not failed. A venture has to be given a chance to succeed before it can fail.” — Robert Frost? Not really. These are the words of TBD‘s Community Engagement Director Steve Buttry.

“Really disgusted by some Tweeps gloating over what happened @TBD. We all work in the media. Any one of us could get laid off any day #awful” — The Washington Examiner‘s Nikki Schwab in a Wednesday tweet.

Jim Brady reveals true feelings about Mark Judge

“So let me get this right…Your biggest failing is not being the New York Press?” — Community Journalist Jen Connic in a Wednesday tweet to Jim Brady in reference to Mark Judge, who writes opinion pieces for The Daily Caller. Judge trashed TBD in a story Wednesday in which he wrote about applying to TBD for a job. Brady’s response to Connic: “Apparently. And that I didn’t hire him. He’s lucky I don’t publish the e-mails he sent me before I blew him off.” Another line from Brady: “Best is the “he’s an idiot” part followed by his desire for a job under said idiot. I think that technically makes him an idiot.” And this: “Damn, now I see my mistake. I didn’t listen to a guy who wanted a job at TBD despite my apparent hackery: Silly me.”

A scribe’s dishwasher nightmare

“All-day, Kafkaesque nightmare buying a Sears dishwasher today. And still not done installing it.” — Congressional Quarterly‘s John Donnelly in a Wednesday Facebook update.

Bret Baier: hooked on golf

“Watching the replay of the golf. Was trying to go to bed early but I am hooked. Can’t wait for good weather and green fairways.” — FNC anchor Bret Baier in a Wednesday night tweet. (Baier is more than a decent golfer. He lettered on four teams at DePauw University and is a member at Congressional Country Club.)

Necessary Tweet of the Day

“For the record, everything I type after 10 p.m. should be tagged #latenighttweet and considered accordingly.” — Metro Weekly Co-Publisher Sean Bugg in a vital Wednesday night tweet at 11 p.m. (This item was in direct defiance to Metro Weekly writer Chris Geidner‘s request.)

Media assoc. at war with her clothes

“Tried on seven different outfits this am. Bad way to start off the day.” — Rachel Slobodien, senior media associate at Heritage Foundation in a Thursday morning tweet.

The week in birthday wishes…

The Hill‘s Molly Hooper and TWT‘s Ben Birnbaum. Happy Birthday!

The Daily Caller Party: Even a Caveman Can Attend

The cast of characters at Monday night’s Daily Caller second official keg party was nothing short of colorful. For one thing, this wild-haired intern from Reason Magazine, Armin Rosen, showed up and life as we know it will never be the same. For another, even without the original guest of honor, GOP consultant Roger Stone, the celebration of new hire Mary Katharine Ham, turned out a jammed hallway full of journalists and guests and a keg sponsored by Miller-Coors. Stone had to be in New York to coach gubernatorial hopeful Carl Paladino. “This is how it should be,” remarked Daily Caller V.P. of Sales Alex Treadway, raving that Ham is sure to be a publication star.

The Wild Haired intern, meanwhile, was opening up. “Please don’t ruin my career,” Rosen repeatedly begged FishbowlDC throughout an evening that felt like something between a summer camp outing, a blog convention and a trip to the circus. Before fleeing the party, the intern’s boss, Matt Welch, Reason‘s Editor-in-Chief, asked me to babysit Wild Hair and make sure he didn’t do anything stupid. (Note to Editors: We’ll be glad to babysit your reporters, but a) really? b) it’s questionable FBDC policy, and c) we wouldn’t dream of stopping a journalist from partaking in any form of stupid activity he or she so desires.)

Soon enough, the intern’s clear Doppelganger emerged: the Geico caveman. He explained the simplicity of his hair upkeep. “It’s easy, I don’t comb it – ever,” he said. “All you have to do is get into a sublime state of not caring and you get this hair.”

Party banter ranged from Washington’s uptight nature and the Brett Favre sexting scandal to House GOP leaders and Twitter follower counts. “People in Washington are boring as f—k,” remarked Daily Caller’s Mike Riggs. And yet, those here could hardly be considered boring – Less Government’s Seton Motley, when Wild Hair was pointed out, pulled out a shirtless picture of himself (perhaps from the 80s) with wavy blondish hair cascading to his waist.

Riggs swore he wasn’t “on anything” Monday night except beer. We believed him (mostly) until he knelt down on one knee and bestowed solemn praise to another partygoer, The Exiled’s Mark Ames, while chanting, “Oh my f—king God. Oh my f—king God.” Washington City Paper’s Moe Tkacik, who came to the party with Ames, suggested that some in Washington might have Asperberger’s Syndrome. She’s a recent transplant to Washington and hire to WCP. (If you haven’t seen her work, it’s a must).

Others in the crowd: Daily Caller spokeswoman Becca Glover Watkins, Publisher Neil Patel, Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson, the Washington Examiner’s J.P. Freire, The Hill’s Christina Wilkie and Wonkette’s Elizabeth Glover. Also from Wonkette was the newly hired Morning Editor, Riley Waggaman, who looks like something out of a Harry Potter movie with blond hair, glasses and a bright turquoise button-down. Already partied and gone were The Weekly Standard’s John McCormack and TWT’s Eli Lake. McCormack, referring to Riggs’s recent shrooming escapade, tweeted about the party, saying he “felt a little funny after eating some Halloween candy but a purple monkey just flew in the room and told me candy is not laced.”

Many Daily Caller reporters were on hand to kick the keg. The included Alex Pappas, Jeff Winkler, Jonathan Strong, Chris Moody, Matthew Boyle, a part-timer, and a mystery staffer from a Democratic lawmaker’s office who didn’t want to be identified. (An office rule forbids office staffers from being Google-able alongside the boss’s name.) More in the crowd: TWT’s Ben Birnbaum, CNS’s Nicholas Ballasy, The Atlantic’s Chris Good and Daily Caller’s new blog consultant Klaus Marre.

It’s time to check on Wild Hair…

Two Reporters Join TWT

Two new scribes begin at TWT today. They are Shaun Waterman, a University of Cambridge graduate and freelance national security reporter formerly with UPI, and Ben Birnbaum, formerly with TNR.

TWT‘s Editor Sam Dealey told FishbowlDC: “We’re delighted to have Shaun and Ben join our reporting team. Shaun’s a top-notch pro with one of the best rolodexes in the business, and Ben is a beautiful writer with more natural talent in his little finger than many of the industry’s veterans. Both will play a big role in TWT‘s future.”
