Daily Caller’s Betsy Rothstein Gets Lit for Interview with Marijuana Consultant

admin-ajax.phpOver the weekend, former FishbowlDC editor turned editor of The Daily Caller’s ‘The Mirror’ Betsy Rothstein posted an interview she conducted – completely stoned – with marijuana industry strategist Aaron Houston.

Three puffs in, from an undisclosed patio within the confines of North America, Rothstein recalls in her piece, “It was all downhill from there. Or uphill. Or sideways. Or upside-down. I can’t quite piece it together, but I’ll try.” Sounds like “Inception.”

The interview accompanied Rothstein’s regular feature of “The Mirror Questionnaire,” a Q&A typically conducted over email on the interviewee’s career and thoughts on Washington along with some satire, and this time around, includes Rothestein’s internal thought process in italics.

I feel like I’m swimming.” “WE BOTH START LAUGHING UNCONTROLLABLY.” “Seeing four of him. WTF? HEEEELLLPPP. His words sound like they’re in a bubble. Trying to understand what the fuck he’s saying.Read more

MontelWMarine Corps veteran and long-time TV host Montel Williams went on Fox News yesterday to passionately discuss veteran’s issues.

Birdy Chatter: Meredith Shiner and Patrick Gavin Make Moves

FBDC alum and current Daily Caller gossip maven Betsy Rothstein has some interesting tidbits:

Roll Call‘s Meredith Shiner, who recently resigned from the publication, is in serious talks to go to work for Yahoo! News. The deal has not yet been finalized.

Also…per a tweet by Michael Calderone of HuffPost, Patrick Gavin has resigned from Politico. He is moving on to new ventures which he is not yet disclosing. He declined to comment.

We also hear from a little birdy that, after five years, P-Gav’s last day at The Politico will be May 1st. His next moves are’t finalized yet, but should be soon.

In Defense of Jake Tapper

jake_tapper_x200Embattled CNN anchor Jake Tapper took to Facebook last night to defend himself against the onslaught of criticism he has received over his Friday interview with former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell.

“We need to have open, honest, and yes uncomfortable conversations about this war,” Tapper wrote. “We can’t do that if any time someone sees things differently they’re accused of hating the troops. Questions HONOR the troops. And our freedom to ask them is what they fight and die for.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Indeed, in this humble blogger’s opinion, the witch hunt provoked by The Blaze‘s Oliver Darcy and Glenn Beck is appalling and the only truly offensive aspect of this whole Jake-Tapper-Hates-the-Troops affair. Tapper did nothing more than ask the kind of questions that many, if not most, Americans are thinking about the War in Afghanistan. Luttrell’s reaction was unwarranted, though perhaps understandable. The faux-controversy being ginned up after the fact is what is actually disrespectful to the memory of the soldiers who died in Afghanistan. Darcy and Beck should be ashamed of themselves for  intentionally obfuscating the story, purely for the sake of driving up page views. Betsy Rothstein at the Daily Caller has a great piece up which expounds in more detail on why this is true -we suggest you go read it.

But no one does a better job of defending Jake Tapper than Jake Tapper, so I’ll let the man speak for himself:

Regarding this controversy…

I’ve spent years reporting on troops and their families so it pains me that my use of the word “senseless” to describe the 19 SEALs and troops killed in Operation Red Wings has become the focus of this interview with an American hero and has been misinterpreted as a reflection of my thinking the deaths meant nothing and than somehow I’m not grateful.

I would hope that my reporting trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, my book about Combat Outpost Keating, my two CNN documentaries about Medal of Honor recipients, and my continued reporting on veterans and troops and their families would belie that accusation.

Apparently not.

Afternoon Reading List 11.18.13

Craig James defends ESPN commentator: Yesterday, Breitbart posted former sports broadcaster and football player Craig James‘ response to remarks made by ESPN commentator Kevin Blackistone regarding the national anthem. Blackistone believes the song is a “war anthem” and full of “military symbolism.” While James disagrees with Blackistone’s statements, he still defends the commentator’s right to say them.

Why you should read it: It was either Jon Bon Jovi or Voltaire who said: “I disagree strongly with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” First amendment, baby! Hell yeah! Read more here.

David Folkenflik body slams Roger Ailes (metaphorically speaking): PoliticoMagazine posted a piece yesterday by NPR’s David Folkenflik about all of the fun and quirky broadcasting tactics of Fox News’ chairman, Roger Ailes. Folkenflik calls Ailes “pugnacious,” meaning eager or quick to argue, quarrel, or fight, which this blogger accidentally read as “puglarious,” meaning bearing a strong resemblance or regard to a hilarious looking pug. Either definition would suffice, however.

Why you should read it: Besides the puglarious picture of Ailes at the top of the piece? You have to check out the ways Ailes will ruin your career in some bizarrely well conceived and specific manner, engineered to warp your psyche and destroy you professionally, emotionally, and psychologically if you ever cross him in the future.
