The Harrisburg Patriot-News’ Washington Reporter, Brett Lieberman, was one of those victims of the “Closing DC Bureaus Is The New Black” trend. FishbowlDC has obtained the following email, sent by Lieberman to friends and colleagues:
After more than 13 1/2 years covering politics and government in Washington for the Harrisburg Patriot-News (15 if you count the time at States News Service), where I’ve had some great opportunities to cover the Iraq war in Iraq, presidential candidates, irritate Democrats and Republicans alike, and be accused of being a leftist and rightwing nut — sometimes for the same story or column — I am moving along, effective today.
As many of you know, Newhouse News Service will be closing its doors on Nov. 7th. I was offered the opportunity to continue writing for the Patriot-News in Harrisburg. But after much thought and many sleepless nights, my family and I have decided that it’s best for me to decline this offer and look for other opportunities.
One such opportunity has already presented itself. The Forward newspaper, a highly respected New York-based publication that somebody recently described to me as “The Wall Street Journal of Jewish newspapers,” has offered me a really exciting position as the political correspondent to cover the presidential election. I’ve got the right last name for the job and my mother would be so proud! Oy, vey.
I will be working under new editor Jane Eisner, a former top editor and columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer. She most recently served as vice president of the National Constitution Center.
It’s an exciting opportunity, but short-term arrangement, that will allow me to cover the presidential election through the end of November with a possibility for an extension. That means that I will still be looking for a permanent position, so please keep your eyes and ears out.
