BuzzFeed Brews: ‘It’s Like a First Date’

Asked to describe the idea behind “BuzzFeed Brews,” John Stanton says, “It’s like a first date. Get them a little drunk and relaxed so they can talk about things people don’t normally hear them talk about.”

Stanton is the Washington Bureau Chief for BuzzFeed and last night was the launch of the website’s new series wherein newsmakers are invited to sit before an audience and answer questions. And there’s free beer.

It’s essentially the same thing as Politico‘s Playbook Breakfast, “minus the stale bagels, plus the beer,” cracked BuzzFeed‘s Politics Editor McKay Coppins to FishbowlDC. (The site’s publicist Ashley McCollum boasts that she came up with that description.)

The first guest: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). For roughly 45 minutes Rubio answered questions from BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith about immigration, gay marriage and the future of the Republican Party. Of course, lengthy segments here and there were spent on why Rubio prefers Tupac over Biggie Smalls (“His lyrics are more insightful in my opinion.”) and whether he had to “think long and hard” before letting his son play recreational football. Stanton said that’s another thing distinguishing the Brews series from Playbook Breakfast, whose audience may not be interested in those things. continued…

“Only an hour until WH ‘women’s forum’ and I still haven’t rec’d invite yet! How dehumanizing. Ahh…the Obama glass ceiling 4conserv women.” — Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.

FNC reporter going on a cruise. Bad luck?

“Really – did they have to re-release Titanic just as I’m leaving on a cruise? Ha! #BadTiming” — Fox News Supreme Court reporter Shannon Bream.

Classy quote of the day…“All best to Matt Lauer.
TV reporter short on Zzzzz’s, long on jitters

“After four hours of sleep, caffeine is my friend this morning. But now I’ve got the too-much-coffee jitters. Eeeek!” — WJLA’s Mike Conneen.

Workplace no-no’s

“No one lets me say ‘quiet day’ where I work. #jinx” — Prince George’s PD Media Relations Director Julie Parker, a former reporter for ABC7.

Noteworthy: ABC “This Week” will be hosted by White House Correspondent Jake Tapper this week for Easter. He writes on Twitter, “Easter exclusive with @RickWarren! Hope you’ll tune in.”

Fresh Weigel, a delicacy in Washington: “7 am, waking up in the morning. Gotta be fresh. Gotta go downstairs.” – Slate‘s Dave Weigel on being fresh.

Clarification and correction: Brian Darling was not “terminated” from Human Events, as was reported yesterday. Darling is Senior Fellow for Government Studies at the Heritage Foundation and has been for more than seven years. He writes a weekly column that Human Events ran until management recently dropped it. He is currently in talks it to move it to The Daily Caller and/or Townhall.com. While his “Legislative Lowdown” column won’t be in Human Events anymore, Darling hasn’t missed a paycheck because he wasn’t paid by them. He was paid by his employer.

Human Events‘ Mattera Gets the Axe

Jason Mattera, editor-at-large for Human Events, was terminated last week. He has been replaced by conservative columnist David Harsanyi.

Mattera released a new book in mid-March. FBDC hears there was an agreement between he and Human Events‘ publisher Joe Guerriero to remain employed with the conservative weekly until the publicity tour for the book was complete. Evidently, the tour has ended.

Mattera’s dismissal comes on the heels of two other Human Events writers who no longer write for the publication. While Tony Lee was terminated, Brian Darling‘s column was discontinued. Darling is employed with the Heritage Foundation.
