The Kalorama manse of lobbyist Juleanna Glover played host to The Week‘s first annual Academy Awards party last night.  Complete with Oscar-shaped cookies, popcorn and tuxedo-clad servers passing trays of Junior Mints, Milk Duds and Redvines, the event was a perfect balance of festive glitz and a casual night at the movies.

Despite the all-star lineup of party hosts (Ron Bonjean, Tammy Haddad, Juleanna Glover and Karen Finney), the fete was not over-attended, offering around 100 guests a relaxed atmosphere to mix, mingle and eat their weight in miniature grilled cheese sandwiches* (see: me).  Spotted taking in the festivities were FD’s Mary Kathryn Covert and Michael Steel, CNN’s Brianna Keilar, Sam Dealey of Qorvis, Sarah Bonjean, Janet Donovan, NRSC’s Brian Walsh,  Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times, soon-to-be USA Today‘s Jackie Kucinich, Doug Heye, The Hill‘s Emily Goodin, Mark Paustenbach, Glenn Ballard, Pepper Watkins, Jay Newton-Small, Jeremy Bash of the CIA, Barbara Martin, Becca Glover Watkins, Kimball Stroud, Washington Life‘s Kevin Chaffee, WaPo‘s Jonathan Capehart, Daily Caller’s Megan Mulligan,  UrbanDaddy’s Jeff Dufour and an uber-preggers Jayne Sandman.

Just after BBC News correspondent Lyse Doucet was awarded the prestigious David Bloom Award, Doucet, Katy Kay and the rest of the BBC team held court at the Historical Society of Washington DC, following last night’s annual Radio Television Correspondents Association (RTCA) dinner. Celebs, politicos and hoards of journos packed the glam fete.

Members of the media and Capitol Hill aides were spotted swarming the new aide, who was chatting with the likes of GOP pundit Doug Heye, Politico‘s Dan Reilly, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) Spokesman Brad Dayspring, NRSC’s Ken Spain, Roll Call‘s Shira Toeplitz, WaPo‘s Paul Kane, and NRSC Spokesman Brian Walsh .

“He always seems happy,” said a Capitol Hill journalist who ran into Allen last night and chatted with him briefly.

Allen, who signed on to Politico for three months only, this week switched over to the other side of the tracks to work for Schultz.

“I think that he’s a great contribution to the team,” said Schultz’s spokesman Jonathan Beeton, already sounding the perfect spokesman for Allen and nearly casting him like a Founding Father.

“He’s obviously, you know, insightful and intelligent and has a great historical perspective on the institution. That was what the congresswoman was looking for. Jonathan Allen fits that to a T.”

Beeton said he had no concerns about Allen switching teams from the journalism to politics and neither does Schultz. “George Stephanopoulos is only one I successfully know of going the other way,” he added.

Suspicious Package- WaPo‘s Tom Toles, Christina Sevilla of the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, Bloomberg’s Tim Burger, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Bryan Greene and LAT‘s Josh Meyer- performed at the Danish Embassy Friday night, across the street from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s house (she no-showed). The event was in advance of the UN’s Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December and the band dedicated one of its last songs The Beatles’ “Come Together” to its cause.

Adoring fans included Dick Keil, Anu Rangappa, Juleanna Glover, Kiki Ryan, Brian Walsh, Doug Heye, Mark Paustenbach, Sasha Issenberg, Wendy Gordon, Jill Collins, Lauren Vicary, Kenny Day, Adam Zagorin and Allan Lengel, among others. The after-party continued at the Darlington House on Dupont Circle… there we were joined by Matthew Cooper, Polson Kanneth and Amy Holmes, to name a few.

Last night, the National Journal Group celebrated the official launch of 3121, a social network of sorts for congressional staff and members. The invite-only fete was held in the rotunda of the Ronald Reagan Center and after a slew of strange obstacles and a run-in with Jill Biden (more on that after the jump), my excellent adventure ended there.

The event featured a log-in bar where staffers could claim their profiles, a photo booth for snapping profile pics and plenty of booze. FishbowlDC was lucky enough to get a full demo of 3121; which to my surprise seemed quite useful and user-friendly.

We’re told the collaboration tool/directory houses roughly 9,000 profiles – 4,500 were released and 500 were claimed by the end of day one (yesterday). The remaining 4,500 will be rolled out today; offering all members and hill staffers access to network.

The Hacks will be coached by WSJ‘s Brody Mullins and WaPo‘s Paul Kane. Team Flack will be led by OB-C Group principal (and flack chairman emeritus) Bob Stevenson and senior advisor to Senator Barbara Boxer, Natalie Ravitz.

Flack practices will begin next week at the H Street Country Club and will feature a mix of the best and brightest spin peeps past and present. Ravitz, Stevenson, Mike Reynard (Bunning), John Feehery (former House Majority Leader Hastert), Christina Mulka (Durbin), Kyle Downey (Thune), Brian Walsh (NRSC), Drew Cantor (former GOP Conference), Bette Phelan (Carper), Antonia Ferrier (Boehner), David Wade (former Kerry), Kevin McGrann (Boehner), Rhonda Bentz (Navigators Global, California girl and flack extraordinaire) and a apparently a few interns named “Jeter, Ortiz, Pujols, and Papelbon.”

Kane and Mullins are mum on their surprise lineup, but announcements of big bold-faced journo all-star names will be made in the coming days. Stay tuned. Anyone wishing to suit up for The Hacks should email Brody.Mullins@wsj.com.

The Rules of Battle: The Hacks are required to “blog the game while they are playing – while fielding, while hitting”. Only the Flacks are allowed to “spin” the ball. The losing team must pay for health care reform. (Which is roughly the cost of a post-game celebration at Kelly’s Irish Times).

“The hacks are on a long winning streak. Maybe five years in a row. We’ve pretty much destroyed them every year”, says Mullins. What’s the secret, you wonder? “I rack it up to recruiting”, he adds.
A challenge from Stevenson: “If the Flacks win, Paul Kane has to wear a Boston Red Sox hat to the next Phillies game. If the Hacks win, Stevenson has to wear a Phillies hat in the privacy of his office.” We await Kane’s volley.

Slate’s Jack Shafer on life after newspapers: What would life without newspapers be like? When I consider the dead and dying newspapers of our time, and the post-newspaper world everybody is predicting, I can’t help but think of the 114-day New York newspaper strike of 1962-63.

PBS’ The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, is getting a makeover, according to NYT, “designed to bring it more fully into the digital era, give it a livelier look and nudge it, however slowly, toward the day when its longtime anchor decides to retire.”

LAT reports viewers are doing a 180 on 360: Anderson Cooper‘s ratings have been in a sharp decline all year, and so far the month of May is no exception. According to Nielsen, the audience for the 10-11 p.m. hour of his show so far this month is 933,000 viewers. This is the first time he’s fallen below the one-million mark since last August.

CBS’ Sunday Morning is going hi-def this weekend.

Bloomberg TV anchor Betty Liu joined the Morning Media Menu today and you can listen in here.

NBC’s David Gregory is a Caps fan and NYT caught up with the “Meet the Press” anchor to ask about parallels between sports and politics? “You know, in politics and in sports, we tend to be drawn to personalities, drawn to the people. That’s what we find most animating. And you have these outsize personalities that sort of transcend the teams.”

Slate launched an online magazine directed at women, Double X, a “provocative, irreverent analysis of politics, culture, family, fashion and more,” according to the release. We’re intrigued. ABCNews.com will also be collaborating with Double X for content.
