Caren Bohan Returns to Reuters

Caren Bohan is returning to Reuters from National Journal as a domestic policy correspondent. Bohan, a past president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, spent decades at Reuters before moving to National Journal over a year ago.

“National Journal’s loss is so Reuters’ win. Everyone loves Caren,” a media source told FishbowlDC.

At the end of 2012, NJ announced a “major reorganization” in which it was announced that Bohan would lead up the digital team’s policy channel.

See the internal memo sent out late Tuesday. continued…

Group Raises Holy Hell Against Fox News Getting Helen’s Seat – They Prefer NPR to Fox News

A progressive group called CREDO Action is trying to persuade the White House Correspondents’ Association that Fox News is not a legitimate news organization and should not get former White House scribe Helen Thomas‘s front row seat. The board meets Sunday to decide.

Becky Bond, the group’s political director, wrote a scathing letter to members of the WHCA board – they want NPR to get the seat. Bond says that 189,000 people have signed a position saying that “Fox News is a right-wing propaganda operation.”

But Washington Examiner‘s White House correspondent Julie Mason, a WHCA board member, wasn’t impressed. “Smearing our colleagues like this isn’t terribly persuasive,” Mason told FishbowlDC. “The reporters, producers and photographers from Fox News assigned to the White House are some of the best and well-respected in the business. Bloomberg, Fox and NPR made strong cases for moving up in the briefing room, I’m sure the board will have a good debate.”

FishbowlDC has reached out to Fox News PR on this matter. Should we get a response we’ll bring it to you.

Read the anti-Fox News letter after the jump…
(And find out more on CREDO Action – as in, what is it?)

Who Will Get Called On Tonight? A Look Back At Obama’s Pressers

Tonight is President Obama’s fourth prime-time press conference, fifth overall. Each presser has lasted about an hour and averages 13 reporters’ questions. Fox did not air Obama’s 100th day press conference, the third, on the network and will not tonight either.

In his first prime-time press conference Feb. 9th, the President called on, in this order: AP’s Jennifer Loven, Reuters’ Caren Bohan, CBS’ Chip Reid, NBC’s Chuck Todd, Bloomberg’s Julianna Goldman, ABC’s Jake Tapper, CNN’s Ed Henry, NYT‘s Helene Cooper, Fox’s Major Garrett, WaPo‘s Michael Fletcher, Helen Thomas, HuffPost’s Sam Stein and NPR’s Mara Liasson.

WHCA Election Results: Examiner‘s Mason, Newsweek‘s Bailey, NPR’s Gonyea and Reuter’s Bohan Win Seats

And the winner is…

The White House Correspondents Association election board results are in. Congratulations to 2011-2012 President Caren Bohan of Reuters. The at-large seat goes to the Examiner‘s Julie Mason, the radio seat to NPR’s Don Gonyea, the magazine seat to Newsweek‘s Holly Bailey and the wire seat is filled by Bohan.

Other contenders included McClatchy’s Steve Thomma, Politico‘s Mike Allen and American Urban Radio’s April Ryan.

We hear Mason’s victory was a landslide- 85 votes to Thomma’s 29 and Allen’s 27. Her “campaign manager” Bloomberg’s Karen Leigh say this win was a big deal for a someone from a smaller paper (and that the campaign-promised massages on the White House South Lawn will cost $20, with a special discount for anyone who works for a daily).

The ever-gracious Allen offered his congratulations in today’s Playbook.

More, including comments from the winners, to come today…

Obama Calls On Helen & HuffPost In First Primetime Press Conference

President Obama‘s first primetime press conference ran about an hour long and he took 13 questions from reporters.

Who got questions? In order: AP’s Jennifer Loven, Reuters’ Caren Bohan, CBS’ Chip Reid, NBC’s Chuck Todd, Bloomberg’s Julianna Goldman, ABC’s Jake Tapper, CNN’s Ed Henry, NYTimes’ Helene Cooper, Fox News’ Major Garrett, WaPo’s Michael Fletcher, Hearst’s Helen Thomas, Huffington Post’s Sam Stein and NPR’s Mara Liasson.

“All right, Helen. This is my inaugural moment here. I’m really excited,” President Obama said, calling on Thomas, who, as always, was seated in the first row.

After the jump, check out what they asked and vote on the question of the night…

Did You Make Obama’s Cut?

There are so many journalists eager to join Sen. Barack Obama on his European trip that the campaign simply can’t accommodate all of them on the plane.

Lynn Sweet blogged a few days back:

The Obama campaign plane, a 757, will have only about 40 journalists on the manifest. More reporters wanted to travel with the Obama campaign; some have been told not to pack their bags, one notified to be on standby. I’m told hundreds of news outlets were interested in making the trip with Obama, very popular in Europe. There are fewer seats available for reporters than usual because the campaign is taking on more staff than routinely flies with Obama. Secret Service agents also travel on the campaign plane.

Two U.S. based reporters for foreign newspapers who I talked to today said they were told no foreign journalists–even from the countries Obama is visiting–will be on the plane.

We hear that there are some upset journos, because some regular reporters have been kicked off the plane for this trip, with the campaign citing space reasons. The Washington Times wasn’t given a seat. Neither was The New Yorker (pissed about the recent cover?). Or the Sunday Times of London. Of course, space is especially tight because of all the superstar reporters interested in this trip.

As a result, some reporters are doing portions of the trip on their own, not in the campaign bubble.

Among the outlets on the plane: ABC, New York Times, Washington Post, Bloomberg, AP, USA Today, Fox News, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, McClatchy, Sun-Times, Politico, Time, Newsweek (and various network embeds).

Who you might see on the plane: Candy Crowley, Jake Tapper, Major Garrett, Karen Tumulty, Margaret Talev, Jeff Zeleny, Lynn Sweet, Mike Dorning, Dan Balz, Caren Bohan, Julianna Goldman, Carrie Budoff Brown, Richard Wolffe, Sunlen Miller, Don Gonyea, Chris Welch, Maria Govrolic, Bonney Kapp, Athena Jones, David Espo, Lee Cowan, Mark Hudspeth, David Wright, Glen Johnson.

Playbook says that over 200 requests were made by reporters to the campaign.

In a Washington Post op-ed Sunday, Der Tagesspiegel D.C. bureau chief Christoph von Marschall says “he has almost completely refused to answer questions from foreign journalists. When the press plane leaves tonight for his trip, there will be, as far as I know, no foreign media aboard. The Obama campaign has refused multiple requests from international reporters to travel with the candidate.”

On the trip, Carrie Budoff Brown talks about the new dress code issue by the Obama campaign.

Newsweek’s Holly Bailey also looks at media coverage of Obama/McCain trips abroad.

Rachel Sklar: “Anchors Away! (On Obama’s Overseas Adventure)”

AP’s David Bauder asks: “Is media playing fair in campaign coverage?”

After the jump, the first pool report from the trip (from Chicago Tribune’s John McCormick)…
