CNN Shutting Down Martin’s ‘Funk’ in Final Days?

The TV world can be so cold. When you’re out, you’re out. And sometimes sooner than you might expect.

There are 17 days left on Roland Martin‘s CNN contract. But the powers that be appear to be shutting it down early. With his contract ending April 6, some producers have been informed not to book him, FishbowlDC has learned. We knew something was awry when we noticed Martin hadn’t tweeted his usual #bringthefunk alert on Twitter that he’d be appearing on Erin Burnette’s “Out Front,” which he hasn’t done in a month. On Wednesday he tweeted that he did Canadian TV. The Canadians can find time to bring Martin’s funk, but not CNN?

Let’s get this straight. That semi-usual appearance he had on Thursdays during Carol Costello‘s slot? Gone. It’s been three weeks since he appeared on her program and months since he appeared on “The Situation Room.” He was also non-existent during CNN Inauguration coverage in January. A final appearance on his close friend, Soledad O’Brien‘s program, which ends next week? That appears to be a dead end proposition, too.

Martin’s fierce Twittering following is not pleased. “I’m certainly going to miss you on CNN,” wrote Pasadena, Calif. resident Carolee Reed. “I cant believe that the two people who always kept it real are leaving.” (Person number two being O’Brien, she explains.) Ebony Shamberger, a UNC J-School student, was dumfounded. “Leaving CNN on April 6 — what?” she wrote in response to Reed.

CNN’s Costello to Atlanta

Having just revamped their mornings with Soledad O’Brien and “Starting Point”, CNN is now adding Washington-based Carol Costello to their morning lineup, FishbowlDC has learned. Costello will move from DC to Atlanta to begin anchoring CNN Newsroom from 9-11am.

Kyra Phillips will move to 11am, followed by Suzanne Malveaux from noon to 2pm. The changes are taking place as Randi Kaye, who was filling in temporarily on CNN Newsroom, becomes the permanent anchor for CNN Weekend mornings. Kaye will also do investigative reporting for AC 360 weeknights.

Anderson Cooper to Spice Up Tuesday’s Debate

CNN anchor and daytime’s new heartthrob Anderson Cooper will moderate the Tuesday, Oct. 18 debate presented by CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference.

The debate, which will air live from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (ET), will broadcast from The Venetian Resort in Vegas. Voters from the 16 states and territories that make up the Western region of the U.S. will be in audience to pose questions directly to the candidates. Let’s hope Newt Gingrich doesn’t give them the Chris Wallace treatment.

Eight presidential contenders will participate in the debate: Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, businessman Herman Cain, former House Speaker Gingrich, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

CNN’s live and on-location coverage surrounding the debate will begin with CNN Newsroom on Saturday, Oct. 15 and continue through American Morning on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Programming from Sin City along with Cooper will include Wolf Blitzer, Erin Burnett, John King, T.J. Holmes, and Carol Costello. CNN political contributors and analysts also on hand will include Gloria Borger, Ron Brownstein, Alex Castellanos, Ari Fleischer, David Gergen and Mary Matalin. CNN en Español’s Washington anchor Juan Carlos López will host live analysis on that network before the debate starting at 7:45 p.m. (ET). At 8 p.m., CNN en Español will take the debate live with simultaneous interpretation followed by more analysis with CNN en Español’s team of political contributors. The debate will also be carried live on CNN International.

Business Week reports, “This could go down as the year the newspaper brokeâ€”the year that the melting icebergs finally fragmented; the year that the old ways were definitively unmasked as unsustainable amid steepening revenue declines and a steady procession of buyouts and layoffs. The story is substantially different for Pearson’s London-based Financial Times. Like other major British upmarket newspapers, it winced its way through staggering losses earlier this decade, losing $60 million-plus in 2003 and more than $17 million in 2004. Unlike others, it has staged a remarkable turnaround.”

WebProNews reports, “AOL has launched the AOL Technology Network, which includes the blogs Engadget, Switched, TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog), and the DownloadSquad. AOL says its Technology Network will give users a resource to compile information about technology news and products. For advertisers it will allow them to integrate ad campaigns across the network of sites.”

Crain’s New York reports, “Thursday morning, Dow Jones ripped the veil off its new glossy weekend magazine WSJ., from The Wall Street Journal. At a presentation for advertisers the publisher laid out the latest page in its strategy to capture more consumer luxury advertising. The unit of News Corp. also introduced the title’s editor, Tina Gaudoin, who last fall launched the Times of London’s luxury magazine, Luxx.”
