Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

“No White House photos from family meetings. But the family of Emilie Parker, who was 6, released this on their own.” — Paul Brandus of West Wing Reports.

TIPS FROM THE POOL, INTO THE DEEP END: “Deep female sobs were heard from several sections of the audience, as the president started to read the names of the teachers who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary school. …The president is speaking without a teleprompter and he carried his remarks in a dark folder. ” — A White House Pool Report by AFP’s Stephen Collinson on President Obama‘s speech in Newtown, Conn. last night.

Confessional: “I keep having this one horrible thought: I am lying when I tell my children there’s no such thing as monsters.” — ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Jake Tapper in starkly shifting roles over the weekend between reporter and private citizen. He received a lot of praise but some complaints.

Journo pushes gun control laws

“If we as a nation got serious about keeping guns away from the mentally disturbed, Louie Gohmert *would* have reason to be concerned.” — Mother Jones Engagement Editor and former Survivor: Baghdad contestant Adam Weinstein on Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), who went on Fox News Sunday this weekend and announced that more guns are the answer to mass killings such as the one at Sandy Hook.

A mayor, former White House COS changes his mind on guns

“President Clinton and I fought to pass the assault weapons ban. It’s time to renew and strengthen it. An easy vote.” — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. But wait, The New Yorker‘s Ryan Lizza points out the mayor’s incredible hypocrisy…Read here.

And an editor addresses what evil is not…

“Evil has nothing to do with Autism, Asperger’s, or being goth.” — CNN Contributor and Breitbart.com‘s Dana Loesch.

A moment of tweeting silence?

“I won’t be tweeting during President’s remarks. I think we should all listen carefully.” — Politico‘s Roger Simon.

Whoa, what?! “Friend of mine joined NRA this morning. Sleeper mole trying to change org from inside. Will they support more limitations and licensing?” — Washingtonian Publisher Cathy Merrill Williams.

A compliment for CNN: “CNN is doing a segment on comfort dogs being brought to Newtown to help people cope. It’s actually comforting just watching them on TV.” — HuffPost‘s Sam Stein.

Journalistic outrage

“Yesterday’s orgy of erroneous & at times repulsively awful reporting on #Newtown should be a wakeup call for journalists everywhere.” — Roll Call White House reporter Steven Dennis.

“You see journalists saying ‘this is so awful, why does this keep happening’ while rabidly posting links to the killer’s social media.” — Justin Green, editor of David Frum’s blog.

“Not the best day for my trade.” — TIME White House correspondent Michael Scherer with a link to a story on outlets that botched the Connecticut shooting story.

Congratulations to… FNC’s Greta Van Susteren and hubby John Coale on 33 years of marriage. They celebrated on Sunday.

TV journo planned to spend weekend in prayer… continued…

D.C. Journalists Get VIP Status With Santa

What’s better than Santa?

Well, not much apparently. Or getting put on the Very Nice list, which is what happened for about 50 VIPs and “children of” at Tysons Corner Center. On Saturday morning, Tysons hosted area VIPs for a party with Santa, complete with breakfast, balloon animals, facepainting, caricature artists and music (and of chats and photos with Mr. Claus). Attendees included Washingtonian publisher Cathy Merrill Williams, Washingtonian fashion editor Kate Bennett (pictured here), K St. Kate’s Kate Michael, freelance writer and author Cathy Alter, Urban Daddy Washington editor Jeff Dufour and Vocus VP Erin McCahill. (We hear Dufour had such a long list that Mr. Claus had to move him along. He then allegedly tried to remove Santa’s beard. We can’t fathom how he got himself a spot on Santa’s VIP list.)

“She’s sure this Santa is the real deal,” said Bennett of her daughter, Tess. “He had me pretty convinced, too.”

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day: Hurricane-Cyclone Sandy Edition

“DC, take it from Coco Pebbles Chanel: it never hurts to be prepared.” — The Hill’s Howlma Kurtz, a.k.a. Judy Kurtz with accompanying picture.

Mixed feelings: “TWIITTER, I HATE YOU…. OK, I LOVE YOU” — HuffPost‘s Sam Stein. NYT‘s Jonathan Weisman was less confused: “TV seems dull compared to Twitter. Reading my feed I eagerly turned on cable and … Meh.” And Assoc. Editor of The Atlantic Brian Fung slammed the medium: “Glad to know that even in the midst of a hurricane, the Internet is still capable of kicking up monstrously dumb debates. Whew.”

Dork in the Storm

“My wife just remembered we had a bunch of small airline-style bottles of booze squirreled away. #yesplease.” — MSNBC host Chris Hayes.

Morally outraged.

“Protip: Tweets that make political jokes about storm that’s killed at least five people are maybe not worth sending.” — Politico‘s Maggie Haberman.

“Twitter is great and all but it’s proving tonight why journalism with real reporting and sourcing is essential.” — The Hill‘s White House Correspondent and resident Michelle Obama Fan Club Prez Amie Parnes.

“My wife gave birth to our three children at NYU. Horrifying to think of what’s going on there now. Horrifying.” — Conservative writer and professional Twitter fighter John Podhoretz, affectionately known as PodWhore.

“Has the storm past DC and we are through the worst of it? Swear I can’t tell from the coverage.” — CNN Democratic Analyst Hilary Rosen.

“Sandy has taken down Buzzfeed AND Huffington Post! The horror!” — The Times of London‘s Matt Spence. Reacting to the news, Breitbart.com‘s John Nolte remarked sarcastically, “That’s a shame.”

Powerless.

“Lights out here in McLean, Virginia” — The Daily Mail’s Toby Harnden, who will join the UK Sunday Times in January. He posted the accompanying photo.

“NoVa storm update: Power out. Water in basement. Reading Cat in the Hat to 3-year-old by flashlight.” — The Atlantic‘s Molly Ball.

“Feeling stir crazy so went to neighborhood Izakaya place. Returned home to find cable + Internet down.” — The Atlantic‘s Garance Franke-Ruta.

“First electricity flicker. 4:32 p.m.” — HotAir‘s Mary Katharine Ham.

“Afraid for your power? Both the Gtown and West End Ritzs are offering $229 ‘Sandy’ rates for locals. Beats a night in the cold dark!” — Washingtonian Editor Garrett Graff, who likes to appreciate the finer things in life such as Scotch and beautiful hotels.

“And my power just went out here in North Bethesda Maryland. It was a good run folks.” — The Daily Caller‘s Matthew Boyle.

Journo upset about stew and other random complainers

“Sandy is whistling here in my neighborhood. Not as loud as a train coming through the alley or dump truck moving down the street. But loud!” — Democratic Strategist Donna Brazile.

“Afraid the storm-related low pressure is causing my stew to tenderize freakishly slowly.” — Slate economics reporter Matt Yglesias.

“Suddenly, insisting on having a top floor apartment seems like a bad idea. Sounds like debris is hitting my roof!” — The Daily Caller‘s Publicist Nicole Roeberg.

Storm Chasers

“The wind outside my window has very quickly gone from interesting to extremely troubling.” — MetroWeekly‘s Randy Shulman.

“Flying debris now showing like a fast-motion movie through my back window.” — WaPo‘s Erik Wemple.

Comic relief

“El Chucko de Schumer esta hoggingo el microphoño! Que learno to shareo!” — Miguel Bloombito, expressing the media whore tendencies of Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). If you’re not following him, you must: @ElBloombito.

“Anderson Cooper is doing a phoner on CNN so I have no idea how tight his shirt is. Therefore I have no idea how bad things are.” — NBC News’ Shawna Thomas, who later claimed to borrow a variation of a joke from SNL’s Seth Meyers.

“Sexual CNN Headlines.” — NYT comm asst. Jordan Cohen with accompanying picture.

“Oh thank God, David Corn is about to give us his perspective on Sandy on Hardball. Storm coverage is complete now.” — TownHall‘s Derek Hunter.

“Watching CNN coverage of Sandy giving me PTSD. Just put on my CNN windbreaker and started interviewing neighbors w/a plastic microphone.” — former CNN anchor Miles O’Brien.

See which blogger feared the storm might make her pregnant and what advice could MSNBC Contributor Meghan McCain possibly have?

In a recent interview with The Daily Download, Cathy Merrill Williams, publisher of Washingtonian, weighed in on the recent public debate about women and ambition, inspired by Anne-Marie Slaughter‘s controversial article in The Atlantic.

Williams said it helps to “have it all” by having a job that requires less travel and also “knowing what balls are gonna drop.” (Um, excuse me?) She continued, “certainly everyone I know drops a lot of balls.”

Williams also said she has two rules for herself to better balance home and work life:

“I don’t go out more than three nights a week.”

“I also don’t accept invitations on weekend days that don’t accept my kids.”

With those rules come three exceptions: The last week in September, the first week in December and the first week in May, all of which are Williams says are very busy for the magazine.

Noteworthy– Williams said the average Washingtonian reader is very affluent with a net income above $1.8 million and 99 percent of the magazine’s readership has a college education. She also said Washingtonian is tied with Politico for “most-read for D.C. insiders.”

Washingtonian Goes MIA During Storm Coverage

A scan of local Washington pubs finds that some were more helpful than others during and after this weekend’s deadly storm.

That would be an understatement where Washingtonian was concerned. The magazine went AWOL over the weekend and didn’t cover the storm at all. Editor Garrett Graff (a.k.a. Thurston Howell) did not so much as utter a tweet on it.

WCP barely covered it, but at least Managing Editor Mike Madden posted something on Pepco at the top of the site. Even TBD, while operating with a bare bones staff ever since its Titanic type demise, seriously stepped up to the plate. A sample TBD tweet: “If you need to report an outage in your area, here are the numbers you need to call.” TWT, Politico, WaPo — most everyone relentlessly covered the storm.

“Washingtonian dropped the ball on this one,” said one local reporter. “Their monthly magazine is typically a bit behind the times, but to have no helpful information on the website to help local citizens navigate this weekend reminds that they’re not a top local destination to turn to. Cathy should reassess the publication’s leadership.” (Cathy Merrill Williams is Washingtonian‘s Publisher.)

So just what was on Washingtonian‘s website over the weekend? Popsicles, baby animals, napping, vodka-infused melon for July 4th and more.

‘The Real Housewives’ Love D.C. Pubs (and the Feeling is Mutual)

All kinds of publications benefit from the upcoming Bravo’s “Real Housewives of D.C.” Bravo’s Andy Cohen has blogged about the show on HuffPost. Catherine Ommanney, a British housewife, is married to a Newsweek photographer. Mary Amons, another housewife, says Washingtonian magazine hooked her up by picking her husband to be a “style setter”. The publisher, she says, is a a “close” friend. That would be Cathy Merrill Williams.

Mary Amons, is described by WaPo as the “super-mom who lives in a McMansion in McLean.” In Wednesday’s take on the show by WaPo’s Lisa de Moraes, she reveals a relationship between Amons and Washingtonian that sounds cozy:

“Mary’s husband, meanwhile, has been chosen one of D.C.’s style setters by Washingtonian magazine because the publisher is “one of my best friends and she’s really hooking me up,” Mary explains as she winks at the camera.”

FishbowlDC sought comment from Washingtonian this morning. A request for comment was not yet returned. Should the publication have a response later in the day we will bring it to you.

Journos Get “Social” at Safeway

L: Tim Burger, Kiki Ryan, Christine Delargy and Glenn Ballard hit the red carpet with their swag bags full of goodies. R: Kiki Ryan gets acquainted with the fruit.

Cocktails flowed to live music while waiters carried flutes of Cristal and Dom through the crowd. Politicos and media types, dressed in cocktail attire nibbled on shrimp, creme puffs and other culinary delicacies…

While this might sound like an exclusive cocktail on Embassy Row, it was actually the scene at the new Georgetown Social Safeway last night. Media types such as WaPo Publisher Katharine Weymouth and Washingtonian Publisher Cathy Merrill Williams joined WaPo’s Amy Argetsinger, Carol Joynt, Politico’s Kiki Ryan, CBS’ Christine Delargy, Tammy Haddad, 9 News’ Angie Goff, Janet Donovan, Politics Daily’s Annie Groer, Georgetown Dish’s Judith Beermann, Tim Burger, Wendy Gordon, Marlene Hall and Linda Roth for free run of the uber-chic grocery megastore.

The fete, planned by event guru Philip Dufour (the mastermind behind MSNBC’s WHCD & RTCA parties) was actually a blast. Who knew grocery stores could be so much fun?

Partygoer to Obama: ‘Show us Your Tits!’

It was a Mardi Gras-themed party to be sure. Partygoers at The Daily Caller’s second big soiree got a bit raucous last night during the new publication’s SOTU watch party held at George in Georgetown.

Most of the publication’s journos were on hand wearing beads around their necks. Big star Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson arrived after 9 p.m. due to a previous speaking engagement at the Metropolitan Club. Co-creator and publisher Neil Patel was there mingling along with opinion editor Moira Bagley and spokeswoman and booker Becca Glover Watkins.

Things got dicey when Carlson arrived with his wife, Susie. Carlson told FishbowlDC that Susie initially couldn’t get in because she didn’t have ID to prove her age – which is 41. So how’d she get in? “I finally said, come on guys, knock it off,” Carlson said.

By that point, the party was in full swing and packed with a decisively beer-drinking crowd. All five TV’s were turned to Fox News. Partygoers booed Obama on several occasions, with one male yelling out, “Show us your tits!” Daily Caller journos shuddered in response to the remark. Another shouted, “Boring!” When FNC contributor Sarah Palin came on to speak, the crowd whooped with joy. “Thishh ishh a right-leaning crowd,” said one attendee who’d obviously had more than a few beers.

Nevertheless, Patel said he has received no complaints that the Daily Caller sways right. Instead, he said, people remark on the “breadth” of stories they have.

Jim Treacher, the Daily Caller’s blogger, more often known as “Treach”, live-blogged the evening, which was a sight to see. “I’m blogging like a mother f-ker,” he said.

The emcee for the evening was Mark Stern (aka “Nigel” of the Tony Kornheiser show), who happens to be Carlson’s old high school roommate at the boarding school, St. George’s. “I remember the first time he wore a bow tie,” Stern told the crowd. “It was at Chippendales. No one can shake their ass like Tucker Carlson.” Later Stern asked rhetorically, “Who said Washington has no balls? Give it up for Daily Caller!”

Sadly, advice columnist Matt Labash was unable to make it – he’s in Haiti. “No parties for me,” he wrote by e-mail. “Just dead people and malaria.”

Guests in attendance: Politics Daily’s Helena Andrews, GOP commentator Doug Heye (who was interviewed there by a German TV station), GOP lobbyist Juleanna Glover, Politico’s Kiki Ryan, Washingtonian publisher Cathy Merrill Williams, Pundit Amy Holmes, Reason magazine editor Michael Moynihan, TNR’s James Kirchick, The Atlantic’s Chris Bodenner, The Weekly Standard’s John McCormack, The Hill’s Christina Wilkie, former Bush speechwriter John McConnell, and Roll Call’s Elizabeth Brotherton. Neshan Naltchayan, a freelance photographer who worked as a photographer in the Bush White House, was there to snap pictures.

Graff to Replace Limpert as Editor of Washingtonian

Jack Limpert has decided to step down as Editor of Washingtonian after editing the magazine for more than 40 years.
Washingtonian‘s Cathy Merrill Williams Defends WaPo‘s Weymouth

On her Facebook profile, Washingtonian President and Publisher Cathy Merrill Williams has posted a letter applauding WaPo‘s Weymouth for her attempt to find new revenue streams and for trying something new re: the “salon” scandals. Her post below or visit it on Facebook here.

New Washington Post Publisher Katharine Weymouth has been taking a lot of flak from journalists and press junkies. Weymouth and her team at the Washington Post proposed to host off-the-record dinners at her home paid for by a sponsor. These “salon” events were ridiculed in the press as selling access for power and damaging the reputation of the venerable Washington Post.

For all of the bad press she and her editor Marcus Brauchli are getting, I see great hope. I for one am betting on the 43-year-old publisher to reinvent an institution in an industry that is crumbling.

She tried something new. Was it a well thought-out and properly executed plan? No, not even close. But she tried something new. All businesses make mistakes especially when searching for a new business model. RH Macy’s went bankrupt 5 times before it succeeded. Hershey and Disney also initially failed spectacularly, leaving debtors out in the cold.

Weymouth has to keep trying new things because the newspaper lost $25 million last year. As Atlantic owner David Bradley and his own salons were pulled into the debate, he had it right: “As the whole of our enterprise surely knows, the economic foundation beneath journalism is falling away. The imperative…is to rebuild journalism on different financial pillars.” So she is going to likely have to fail a few more times to succeed.

There has been a lot of sanctimony from journalists inside and outside the Washington Post. I suspect it is easier to be sanctimonious if you are not the one that has to pay the rent (or your own pay check). The Post’s Ombudsman Andrew Alexander wrote a 2788 word piece this past Sunday ripping apart the entire management team at the Post all while noting that only 2 readers have canceled subscriptions because of it. This is naval gazing at its worst.

The rest after the jump…
