Scarborough Skips Politico For WaPo?

Everyone knows the relationship between Politico and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” crew is tight. Like really tight. Like Washington Times budget tight.

Politico Executive Editor Jim VandeHei and Chief Political Correspondent Mike Allen are regular guests on the program. They mention Politico stories incessantly. And show host Joe Scarborough has even had his own loosely-updated blog on Politico since the start of 2012. Occasionally, he also writes longer form opinion pieces posted to the front page.

Friday morning, however, Scarborough hopped over to Politico‘s main competitor in D.C: WaPo. At the same time, Allen playfully demeaned WaPo in Politico Playbook for being fashionably late on a story. ”WASH POST ON IT!,” his headline blared. “Front page TODAY (also leads homepage, in case ya missed everyone else’s stories the past couple days)” Allen linked to a WaPo story that took a deeper look at the dinner President Obama had with Senate Republicans.

For the last two months Scarborough and NYT columnist Paul Krugman have been fighting over whether the national debt really matters, via Scarborough’s show and their respective blogs at Politico and NYT. The two battled it out most recently on more neutral territory, Charlie Rose‘s show on PBS.

Krugman has gone back to his column and blog at NYT; Scarborough back to MSNBC and… WaPo.

In a Friday WaPo op-ed, Scarborough and Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of the Earth Institute, continued arguing that “deficits do matter.” Why not continue the argument on his tried and true platform at Politico? continued…

Bloomberg to Host First Debate – Charlie Rose Style

On Tuesday, October 11, Bloomberg and WaPo are hosting their first presidential debate of the 2012 campaign live at Dartmouth College. This is Bloomberg’s first presidential debate.

The focus: the economy. The format will be different than the others with candidates seated side-by-side at a round table facing the hosts and surrounded by audience members. Bloomberg organizers, in a release, say the format “will facilitate serious and substantive debate on issues of vital importance to the country.”

Debate moderators include Charlie Rose, WaPo political correspondent Karen Tumulty and Bloomberg TV White House correspondent Julianna Goldman. The background will not be silhouetted against a black background like a typical Rose program.

Participating candidates include Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, businessman Herman Cain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Details: The 8p.m. ET debate, which will be broadcast live on Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio and WBIN-TV in New Hampshire, will be available to viewers across multiple digital platforms including livestream on Bloomberg.com, washingtonpost.com/debate and Bloomberg Mobile.

FishbowlDC Interview: NBC’s Antoine Sanfuentes

It was no shocker when NBC News announced that Antoine Sanfuentes would replace Mark Whitaker as their Washington Bureau Chief. After all, Sanfuentes was already second in command. Perhaps the most astonishing part of the press release was found in the obligatory biographical information included in all HR announcements. Surprisingly, Antoine’s career began as an intern for the same newsroom he now leads. In 1990 he landed a desk assistant gig and within five years made his way to the White House as a senior producer. Now 21 years after his humble beginnings as a D.A., Sanfuentes has become one of the network’s top executives.

“Everyone respects him because he rose up through the ranks, paid his dues, and understands this bureau and this network instinctively,” explained NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. “For him to become bureau chief made perfect sense – he’s one of us.”

Guthrie describes Antoine as a leader with “razor-sharp competitive instincts” – a view shared by most everyone at the bureau.

“Antoine brings a no-nonsense, ‘make it work’ mentality to the newsroom. He is incredibly knowledgeable, clever and resourceful – the benefit of decades of experience,” said Guthrie.

But it’s more than the network’s on-air talent that feels the love for Sanfuentes. It’s not unusual to find a D.A. hanging out in his office and he’s been known to keep in touch and offer career advice to former interns, long after they’ve completed their internships.

“Antoine is loyal, passionate and somebody who cares greatly about the future of NBC News in Washington and also the bureau’s employees – from the top talent to the midnight-shift maintenance worker,” said Luke Russert.

Besides the full, professional drum kit that resides in his office, Sanfuentes is the epitome of Washington newsman.

“Antoine’s heart is in the news business but his soul belongs to music. He’s an accomplished rock n’ roll and jazz drummer who may even show you his latest drum solo after a meeting about Capitol Hill coverage plans,” added Russert.

With such glowing endorsements, we couldn’t resist asking Antoine to do the FishbowlDC interview. Read it after the jump.

Major Garrett Recalls Oblivion Moment With Elizabeth Edwards

In a series of messages on Twitter, NJ‘s Major Garrett recalls getting relentlessly cracked on by Elizabeth Edwards, who died Tuesday of cancer.

“In ’04, Super Tuesday a.m. I failed to introduce myself to Elizabeth at elevators of campaign hotel…She ribbed me mercilessly that night. And she ribbed mercilessly thereafter…saying i was clueless and self-absorbed. Yes. She had me pretty well pegged.”

Even though Garrett’s now a print journo, the TV guy in him is still vibrant. Now Major has the touching and funny retelling of the incident in much greater elaboration on video. The video places him in a noir Charlie Rose-esque background.

It’s worth a watch. See here.

It was a Dark and Stormy Morning…

Washington awoke to a dark morning today with an unusual amount of lightening.

“I feel like sort of ghosts of Congress past are weighing in on this conversation this morning,” said C-SPAN host and President Susan Swain, who sat before a black backdrop – otherwise known as the storm.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough also mentioned the stormy D.C. weather on “Morning Joe.” He told a guest, WaPo‘s Ezra Klein, that the storm was making him look like he was on another program.

“We have gone from CNBC prime time to the Charlie Rose show,” Scarborough cracked. As everyone chuckled, Klein laughed and tried to look behind himself without turning around (an impossible task) and replied, “You guys are making me feel like I want to turn around!”

The FishbowlDC Interview With TWT’s Eli Lake

Say hello to TWT‘s National Security reporter Eli Lake. He’s also a contributing editor to TNR. When I asked him where he grew up, he writes, “I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the neighborhood of Germantown, where – as far as I know – there are no Germans.” Other Lake claims to fame: He has visited all three charter members of the Axis of Evil – Iraq, Iran and North Korea. He lived in Cairo between 2005 and 2006 where he served as the New York Sun‘s Middle East Bureau Chief. On a lighter note, he loves to Google himself.

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? Champagne. Obviously.

How often do you Google yourself? I get a daily alert. No, actually, I google myself constantly. It’s my home screen. I see my Google results when I close my eyes.

What’s the worst thing youÂ’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa) When I was just starting out, Paul Singer used to say, “O.K. finish up, and in English this time.”

Who is your favorite working journalist? Christopher Hitchens

Do you have a favorite word? Framework-Agreement.

Who would you rather have dinner with – First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? There are a lot of unanswered questions about both women.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? Alcove 1

When did you last cry and why? I was raised by leftists in Germantown, Philadelphia. So I listened to a double album growing up called, “Free to be You and Me,” which contained songs and skits on women’s lib and various forms of tolerance. One song on the album was titled, “It’s Alright to Cry.” Well, I went to John B. Kelly elementary school, which is a public school, and let me tell you, that song is a lie. It’s not alright cry.

What word do you routinely misspell? Journolist.

What swear word do you use most often? Birth Certificate.

What word or phrase do you overuse? “You know what old man, you will never understand our music.”

What TV show do you have to watch? Anything on Press TV.

Where do you shop most often for your clothes? I like to get the Maxx for the minimum.

How Lake makes cancer funny is a mystifying, but he does. Also: find out the best journalism advice we’ve heard in a long time after the jump…

Kitty Kelley’s “Oprah” Hits Tomorrow

Famed Washington author Kitty Kelley‘s “Oprah” hits bookshelves tomorrow. The unauthorized biography has been causing quite a stir even before its release, allegedly blackballed by Larry King, Barbara Walters, David Letterman and Charlie Rose to name a few? ‘Why?’ you might ask. Apparently, out of respect for the big O.

“Oprah” took four years and 850 interviews for Kelley, a Georgetown resident, to produce. FishbowlDC was lucky enough to get our hands on a copy and although we’re only a few chapters in, we’re fairly certain Kelley can add another “bestseller” title to her roster.

Kelley and her biography will be feted on Friday evening at the home of Marina and Daniel Ein. FishbowlDC will be there to catch up with Kelley after the big release.

A White House reporter used the made-for-SNL-word “strategery” in a question posed to press secretary Robert Gibbs at yesterday’s briefing. Funny man Gibbs, referring to the SNL newbie who dropped the F bomb this weekend, joked, “I’m going to curse in a minute.” (h/t HuffPost)

Where did the month of September go? What we know and what we’re reading this Wednesday morning…

Missing the Joe of “Morning Joe?” Joe Scarborough has apparently been recovering from sinus surgery this week.

Fortune‘s profile of Charlie Rose.

CNN’s John Roberts has an awkward moment with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

In “Hollywood” news… HBO’s “Big Love” has been filming in DC– Bill Paxton and Chloe Sevigny have been spotted shooting at Union Station, outside the White House and in Dupont Circle. Jon got the boot from TLC’s “Jon and Kate Plus Eight.” And the “Real Housewives” have no idea who Nancy Pelosi is.

Barbara Walters interviewed Arianna Huffington on her SIRIUS XM radio show. An excerpt from Arianna: “I’m fine to be called a liberal. My problem is that with the analysis that sees everything is divided as right versus left. When you have major alliances among people who are liberals, people are who are conservatives agreeing on things like reforming Wall Street, on things like not escalating in Afghanistan, on things like providing healthcare for the uninsured. Because many people in business know that they have to carry the cost, and it’s weighing down their businesses.”

ONLINE

TWT‘s Christina Bellantoni: A Facebook poll asking whether President Obama should be assassinated has sparked an Internet uproar – with new polls calling for the offending poll creator’s arrest and other social-networking sites questioning their policies amid an unprecedented level of online vitriol.

Daily Candy (which we LOVE) has unveiled a new look.

BOOKS

The e-book of Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue” has been delayed by the publisher to apparently stress hardcover sales.

John Dickerson: Sarah Palin took the name of her memoir from this (unflattering) Slate article.

And apparently, David Letterman has an advance copy of Palin’s memoir. (h/t Wake Up Call)

NEWS NOTES

NYT‘s executive editor Bill Keller on pay model in NYO: “In the end, I think it will come down to a gut call about what we think the audience will accept and how we think the market will evolve…Everybody wants it to be a well-informed, well-considered gut call, but it’s a gut call.”

Dan Rather‘s case against CBS has been dismissed.
