U.S. News Writer Blasts CNN’s Cuomo for Creating ‘Adolescent Fantasy’

In a recent blog post, U.S. News & World Report‘s Susan Milligan blasts CNN’s Chris Cuomo for what she perceives was a cheap and tawdry interview with Amanda Knox. As Milligan observes, he comes across like he’s the deviant that she’s accused of being.

Sentence by sentence, she rips him to pieces, saying Cuomo refused to believe that Knox was not a “deviant, sex-crazed, freak.” Gawker‘s Caity Weaver also thought Cuomo harassed Knox in the interview. She parodies the interview, writing, “Were you doin’ some sex stuff? Some kinda freaky sex stuff? Some freaky sex stuff like everybody says you like? ‘Zat what gets you off? Sex? You like doing sex?” The Daily Caller‘s TV reporter Jeff Poor called Cuomo’s style “aggressive” and listed highlights of the sexual and drug-related questions he asked.

A particularly damning excerpt from Milligan:

“The irony here is overwhelming. Knox is accused of being a murderer motivated by sexual ‘deviancy’ (never mind who decides what is ‘deviant’). And yet it is Cuomo who seems to have created some adolescent fantasy about the slutty girl and her uptight, English friend. Is this journalism or the working script for a bad porn movie?”

It’s a ‘New Day’ at CNN

CNN filled the world in on new details about its morning show today. The show will be called “New Day” and, as already announced, it’ll be hosted by Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan with Michaela Pereira.

The program will launch June 10. It’ll broadcast live from CNN in New York City from 6 – 9 a.m.

Jim Murphy is the senior executive producer and Matt Frucci is the executive producer. CNN’s John Berman and Zoraida Sambolin will continue to anchor “Early Start” from 5-6 am ET.

In Wake of Tragedy, Journalists Bicker

No judgment here.

But last night Twitter was a curious place to be as we watched clusters of journalists needle one another and, in some cases, go for the throat without real just cause. Sharpened nerves. An inability to piece together what happened. Heightened tensions in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.

They were primed to fight. For example, since when do retweets really mean endorsements? Really never, except for last night when anything could spark a feud.

So much for the wise and largely unheeded advice from Ruth Graham, contributing writer to The Boston Globe‘s ideas section; freelancer for Slate and The Atlantic: “Guys, if you see a tweet that pisses you off today because it’s rude or dumb or political, maybe consider just ignoring it?”

What, and ignore the chance to take your frayed nerves out on someone else like a rabid dog? We’re vaguely reminded of Glenn Close in the bloody bathtub scene of “Fatal Attraction” and her chilling remark, “I mean, I’m not going to be ignored, Dan.”

Among the two big clusters of brawls was another “Glenn.” This one, Politico‘s Glenn Thrush, who attempted to school CNN’s Chris Cuomo on proper bomb coverage. Cuomo wrote, 1. “#Boston – latest. Two bombs exploded. A 3rd pkg was blown up by auth’s. As many as 3 other possible devices being investigated.” 2. “#Boston authorities still searching. Two crude bombs with ball bearings or shrapnel went off. Other pkgs found may have been non-explosive.” 3. “Being told at this point not ruling out one actor theory.”

Thrush lashed out. “Wait–so how did one guy plant the 8 bombs u told us about earlier? …Not being a wise ass — asking u to think before u press send,” Thrush wrote to Cuomo. The Atlantic‘s Jeffrey Goldberg promptly backed Thrush: “Now on Twitter, Glenn Thrush is teaching Chris Cuomo about journalism. …Just to be clear, I was complimenting Glenn Thrush for teaching Chris Cuomo about the dangers of spreading unconfirmed information.” Cuomo ignored his critics and didn’t respond to any of them.

The other snarl was Politico‘s Dylan Byers versus ClearChannel‘s Colby Hall and BuzzFeed‘s Andrew Kaczynski. Byers, who’s usually pretty mild-mannered on Twitter, and Kaczynski, who occasionally enjoys subtle antagonizing, eventually seemed to warm back up to each other, but not without a few blistering moments when BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief and Twitter father figure Ben Smith, who at different points hired them both, dove in to effectively say, ‘You’re both right.’ Come on Ben, in a good Twitter fight, opposing sides are never both right! But this morning he declared to some involved parties: “No haters.” But life on Twitter is not always so civilized.

Some more spiritual healing ignored by all: “A crisis depletes your emotions,” wrote megachurch pastor Rick Warren, whose popularly isn’t exactly soaring in the gay community. “You must intentionally replenish them. Make a list of what restores you and do those things.”

Restore? How about a brawl on what the real meaning of “retweet” is. Is it a ringing endorsement or sharing facts or innocently presenting a contrasting viewpoint? If you’re Politico‘s Byers, it’s the latter as he shared a diary piece from the conservative RedState; if you’re ClearChannel‘s Hall it’s the former and it appeared to seriously piss him off. And then Byers used profanity and the whole thing got U.G.L.Y.

Colby Hall: “Why promote some random wacko consipiracy [sic] theory?”

Dylan Byers: “Because it’s indicative of what some on far-right are thinking. will matter later.”

Colby Hall: “Or you are just promoting the acceptance of a half-baked theory that is better left ignored.”

Dylan Byers: “Or you are full of shit.”

Colby Hall: “Whoa!”

Dylan Byers: “I’m not promoting anything. I’m showing parameters of conversation.”

Colby Hall: “Now who’s full of shit?”

Dylan Byers: “You think I’m endorsing fringe speculation because I take note of it? I doubt that.”

Colby Hall: But you didn’t just “take note of it”…you brought attention to it by linking to it. so yeah, you promoted it.

Dylan Byers: “Providing link to an article you don’t necessarily agree with is not promoting it. It’s referencing it.”

Colby Hall: “But editorial judgment isn’t just what you link — it’s what you chose not to link to.”

Zucker’s Bold Morning Show Announcement: Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan

CNN President Jeff Zucker sent a quick note to staff this morning, filling them in on news of the new upcoming morning program that will replace Soledad O’Brien‘s “Starting Point.”

He wrote: “I wanted to be the first to share with you all a very exciting announcement we are about to make about our new morning show. We welcomed Chris Cuomo to the CNN family last month, and we are now rounding out the team with our own Kate Bolduan, and welcoming Michaela Pereira from KTLA in Los Angeles. There will be much more news about this exciting new show in the weeks to come, but today’s announcement gives us a very strong start. Please join me in congratulating Chris and Kate, and welcoming Michaela to CNN.”

Per a press release, CNN announced today that Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan will co-host the network’s new morning show, which will premiere this spring. Michaela Pereira will join CNN from KTLA Morning News in Los Angeles, as the program’s news anchor. News executive Jim Murphy will oversee the program as senior executive producer, and Matt Frucci will serve as executive producer. The show will be broadcast from CNN’s New York City studios.

“I’ve been looking forward to this announcement since I first joined CNN,” said Zucker.

CNN’s Zucker to Meet With NABJ to Discuss Network’s State of Black Journalists

CNN President Jeff Zucker is scheduled to meet today in Atlanta with the leadership of the National Association of Black Journalists to discuss the state of black journalists at the network, FishbowlDC has learned.

Bob Butler, Vice President of Broadcast for NABJ, posted a note on the group’s Yahoo list serve last night saying that he, President Greg Lee and Executive Director Maurice Foster, will sit down with Zucker today.

The meeting comes on the heels of an announcement last week that morning show anchor and NABJ member Soledad O’Brien is transitioning to a new and less visible role at the network producing documentaries.

ABC’s Chris Cuomo to CNN

CNN is abuzz with changes this morning.

Award-winning anchor and investigative reporter Chris Cuomo is joining the network. He will have “a major role in a new CNN morning show” and across the network, says a release, anchoring and reporting on major events.

The news was announced today by Jeff Zucker, President of CNN Worldwide.

“Chris is an accomplished anchor who is already an established name in morning television, as well as a widely respected investigative journalist,” said Zucker. “What I love about Chris is that he is passionate about every story he tells, never forgets about the viewer, and represents the type of journalism that makes CNN great.”

From Cuomo: “This is a fantastic opportunity to do what I value the most and hopefully to do the work that I do best. While it’s very difficult to leave ABC News, a place filled with people I have loved working with for many years, I am excited about my future with CNN.”

Some see her as Rielle the man-hunter, Rielle the marriage destroyer or Rielle, the woman who brought down former presidential candidate John Edwards. But Hunter, who in 2008 gave birth to Edwards’ daughter Quinn, told “20/20′s” Chris Cuomo that she is something very different. “First and foremost, I’m a mom,” she said in an exclusive interview Cuomo which will air this Friday. “Reille Hunter is a mom. And I’m also a woman who fell in love with a married man. I’m not the first woman who has done that and I’m not going to be the last.”

ABC News Announces Steph as “GMA” Host

George Stephanopoulos has been named the new anchor of “Good Morning America,” ABC News President David Westin announced today.

Stephanopoulos will anchor the broadcast with Robin Roberts and replaces Diane Sawyer, who will become the new anchor of “World News” beginning Dec. 21. Juju Chang has been named the news anchor for “Good Morning America” and Chris Cuomo has been promoted to co-anchor of “20/20″ alongside Elizabeth Vargas. Cuomo has also been named ABC News’ chief law and justice correspondent, reporting for all broadcasts and platforms across the news division. Sam Champion will remain the weather anchor on the morning show.

George will take on the role of chief political correspondent and continue to anchor “This Week” until a replacement is named.

President Obama travels to Saudi Arabia today and the State Department issued these instructions to members of the traveling WH press corps yesterday (via Swampland): The Saudi government is permitting journalists accompanying President Obama entry into the country without a visa or the usual customs procedures. While in Saudi Arabia, therefore, journalists are expressly prohibited from leaving the hotel or engaging in any journalistic activities outside of coverage of the POTUS visit. Those who do so risk arrest and detention by Saudi authorities.

A correction from the State Department this morning: “Correction: U.S. Embassy Guidance for Journalists – The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh Saudi Arabia would like to recall the inaccurate guidance issued to the White House press corps on June 1.”

And this message from Saudi Ambassador Adel-Al-Jubeir (via Politico): “Journalists are free to go wherever and report on whatever they want,” emails Karen Hanretty of Qorvis Communications, which represents the Kingdom. “As evidence, [Qorvis's] Michael [Petruzzello] is going to help facilitate media inquiries and requests.”

In a letter submitted to Citizens United, lawyers for Sen. Barack Obama demanded that Citizens United remove “all audio and video footage of Senator Obama” from its new political documentary, Hillary: The Movie. The film includes a clip of Senator Obama’s Nov. 26, 2007, interview with ABC’s Nightline, in which he criticized Sen. Hillary Clinton for “claiming basically the entire eight years of the Clinton presidency as her own.”

TVNewser reports, “CourtTVNews.com Shutting Down”

Bloomberg reports, “Comedy Central’s ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’ and ‘The Colbert Report’ will return to production next month without writers. Both shows will resume on Jan. 7, Comedy Central, a unit of Viacom Inc., said today in an e-mailed statement.”

Biz Report reports, “A recent survey by Harris Interactive found an increase in the number of television viewers that are turning to the Internet instead of their plasmas for their visual entertainment. The survey of 2,455 U.S. adults showed that overall online viewership has risen from 74 percent last year to 81 percent this year.”

ars technica reports, “It’s not every day that a senator takes to the floor to defend “Internet blogs and other Web-based forms of media,” but Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) has done just that in his recent push to pass a Freedom of Information Act reform bill he has coauthored with two Republicans.”

blingboing reports, “Five years ago, Dave Winer made a ‘long bet’ with New York Times executive Martin Nisenholtz: ‘In a Google search of five keywords or phrases representing the top five news stories of 2007, weblogs will rank higher than the New York Times’ Web site.’”

CBROnline reports, “AOL announced it was acquiring New York-based Quigo on November 7 to expand its contextual advertising prowess, which basically matches text adverts to relevant Web pages. Quigo’s two main offerings are: AdSonar, which allows advertisers to buy ads on Websites based on specific pages, sections, topics or keywords; and FeedPoint, a search engine marketing business that helps retail advertisers manage their marketing relationships with search and comparison shopping engines.”

Mr. Strauss, who died Dec. 18 of pancreatic cancer at his home in McLean, recalled the breakthrough in a phone interview shortly before his death at age 60.”

Now it has been reborn as some kind of uber-hip political blog. And word on the street is they’ve been phoning up reporters and inviting them to come and start work…resume, clips and references sight unseen. The site boasts 10 years of tradition (doesn’t mention that 9.5 of them are as a porn site)…and check out the ‘benefits’ page! 25 cent soft drinks and occasional Pizza Fridays!”

Poynter Online’s Steve Klein writes, “How can I say this nicely? Oh, what the heck. If Ted Leonsis is going to be candid and bash mainstream media, then why can’t I? It’s not like I need a job. At this point in my career, I’d only be bought out at best or downsized in a restructuring at worst.”

A release announced, “Alive in Baghdad, a web news program reported and filmed by local Iraqis and distributed by independent US news agency Small World News lost correspondent Ali Shafeya Al-Moussawi after he was killed over the weekend in Sadr City. The correspondent was found dead by a family member after being shot 31 times. Details as to motive and circumstances about the killing are undetermined.”
