Today is, of course, the anniversary of Sept. 11th. The networks will have special coverage- on ABC tonight, Jim Sciutto will have special reports on NYPD’s counter-terrorism unit on “World News” and on “Nightline,” Bob Woodruff will interview author Jon Krakauer about his upcoming Pat Tillman book. On CBS, Katie Couric will explore some remaining questions from the tragedy on the “Evening News.” And on NBC, “Nightly News” will have a special “Making a Difference” segment on national service along with their coverage of the day’s news.

On cable today- MSNBC began airing “9/11/01: The Today Show,” a three-hour program showing how the events unfolded live. In the evening, MSNBC will show a two-hour “9/11: As It Happened” special chronicling NBC’s coverage that day with limited editing. On CNN later today, Anderson Cooper will do a special edition of “AC360″ from Afghanistan, as he has all week. And on Fox News, at 10pmET, “Fox News Reporting, 9/11: Timeline of Terror” will air, which includes interviews with Ari Fleisher, Dick Cheney, and Condoleezza Rice. Jon Scott, who was anchoring for FNC on 9/11/01, will anchor “Happening Now” from Ground Zero. Bret Baier will host “Special Report” from Pentagon Memorial Park at 6pmET. (h/t TVNewser)

E&P: The Washington Post‘s foreign staff plans to boost Middle East coverage, while also focusing more on enterprise and in-depth stories over breaking news in coming months. The 14-person overseas staff is not expected to increase, but may see some transferring to increase the presence in the Middle East and Far East.

21.2 million total viewers watched President Obama’s address to congress on the networks Wednesday night, ranking NBC, ABC and CBS.

Another 9.5 million watched on the three cable news networks, ranking Fox, MSNBC, CNN.

Mark your calendars… Jenna Bush Hager will make her debut as an NBC “Today Show” correspondent one week from today. For her first piece to air Sept. 18th, the former first daughter will profile Dalton Sherman, an 11-year-old motivational speaker from Dallas who made headlines across the country last year after giving an inspiring speech at his school’s pep rally.

Is Fran Drescher heading to cable news? Washington Whispers hears that the actress, who was once speculated to run for office too, is in talks with Fox and MSNBC. There is that 11am hour open at MSNBC…

“We are delighted to announce that Glenn Kessler will take on a new role as player/coach for the national security staff and that John Pomfret will return to National, this time as a diplomatic correspondent concentrating on U.S. relations with China and the rest of Asia.”

Glenn has spent more than seven years as The Post’s main chronicler of the State Department and Secretaries of State from Colin Powell to Hillary Clinton. In his new role he will help oversee the coverage of U.S. foreign policy while continuing to cover U.S. relations with the Middle East. He will also occasionally fill in for Cameron Barr as editor.

Mr. Bush, who also wore black cowboy boots, glanced occasionally at some Sharpie scrawlings on the back of a white cardon an end table. He seemed in high spirits. The fireplace behind the two leaders was festooned with pine roping, gold ornaments and pine cones the size of footballs. Elsewhere in the Oval, a Christmas tree was decorated with elaborately frosted cookies shaped like squirrels, bears and moose. In the shadow of the tree sat Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates. The trip to Beltsville ended up taking about an hour and 10 minutes, compared to 30-35 minutes on typical weekends. It was literally a crawl for the first half hour or so. Tuesday night, Greta will host the show live from The Reagan Library, where she will interview Douglas Brinkley, the editor of “The Reagan Diaries.” On Wednesday, Greta will interview U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and will again host the show from LA that night.
