This Week In Pool Reports

The holidays and the primaries have given us a backlog of pool reports, but there are some gems in here, including holiday plans, the royal treatment of the presidential pups, and the “biggest bling” the Secret Service has ever seen.

“President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice lighted candles and stood silently in the grotto, believed to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ, down steep stone steps beneath the altar of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. A guide named below explained the setting but neither Bush nor Rice said anything there audible to your pool.” — Mark Silva, Chicago Tribune

Peres made some highly complimentary comments to POTUS, saying that POTUS has ‘introduced character into politics,’ and then discussed the peace process. Transcript coming. POTUS joked back to Mr. Peres that he was ‘following your example,’ prompting Mr. Peres to remark, ‘Be careful.’ POTUS then said, ‘I come as an optimistic person and as a realistic person. I come with high hopes.’” — Jon Ward, Washington Times

“No news, except this bipartisan shocker: Rahm Emanuel will be with POTUS all day today. (No, he didn’t fly in on the plane.) Your pool will refrain from smart aleck remarks.” — Sheryl Stolberg, New York Times

“Your bleary eyed pool reported at 7:15 a.m. for a Saturday morning of vicarious exercise. We loaded into the 13-vehicle motorcade at 7:25 for some quality van time. POTUS, wearing a bright blue biking jacket, climbed into his SUV at 8:23. Two bicycles, emblazoned with ‘United States of America,’ were mounted on a backup vehicle. The trip to the Secret Service training facility in Beltsville was uneventful. The exerciser in chief and his entourage entered the Beltsville complex at 8:48 while his journalistic camp followers trooped into the visitor’s center and sampled its culinary delights.” — Dave Cook, The Christian Science Monitor

“At Camp David with the president and first lady, according to the White House, are their twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna; the first lady’s mother, Jenna Welch; the president’s sister, Doro Bush Koch, and her family; and the
president’s brother, Marvin, and his family. ‘Like most Americans,’ Perino said, the president was ‘enjoying time with his family.’” — Bob Hillman, Politico

“Earlier, your pool arrived on the plane to find the presidential pooches, Barney and Miss Beazley, scampering about the press cabin. The door to the guest cabin was open and, in a new spirit for the new year, White House staff accomodated your pool’s request for a tour. The president’s housekeeper sat the dogs in the comfy cabin chairs: Beazley
scampered onto the table to sniff the array of candies and M and Ms.
Those dogs ride in style.” — Stolberg

“Ed spent the weekend at the ranch and was initiated in the protocol of presidential brush-clearing to make a path for the biker-in-chief. ‘I did not get to use the chain saw,’ says the counselor. ‘I was relegated to the raking. New guy.’ The Bushes spent New Year’s eve with two other couples, friends from Texas. The girls and Jenna Welch had already gone. They did not stay up to watch the motorcycle dude fly across the football field, as did your pooler (and as did Gillespie himself, in the staff trailer on the ranch, after grilling some steaks with other staffers.)” — Stolberg

“Some color now on the enormous bling given to POTUS at the palace, after the receiving line and before the meeting. It is a large encrusted necklace with a medallion at the bottom — the medallion was handcrafted by skilled artisans with 18K gold, and it has a handpainted enamel American flag. The necklace is set with hundreds of natural, precious rubies, emeralds and diamonds. Secret Service called it the biggest bling they’ve ever seen–photogs came up with official bling of the highest order.” — Ward

“At 7:33 POTUS came through a door across the room from us, and an officer said, ‘Attention on deck.’ All the sailors stood, and the officer said, ‘At ease.’ The sailors broke into loud and enthusiastic applause as POTUS walked into the room and waved to them. POTUS then walked to the chow line and joined in with a few sailors — he grabbed a plate and deposited pancakes and bacon on the plate, adding a generous dose of syrup to the flapjacks. He stood in chow line next to Seaman Kevin Key, an intel specialist from Wisconsin, and said, ‘Smile, your mother may be watching,’ prompting laughter from press and some sailors who heard. POTUS also joked with photographer Pablo Monsivais of the AP, seeing him and saying, ‘Pablooo.’ He also spoke to Matt Spetalnick of Reuters, saying ‘thank you for all the suggestions, I can figure out what to eat,’ after Matt and another reporter suggested he scoop up some eggs or fruit.
POTUS then sat down at a table in the middle of the room, and the pool was ushered out.” — Ward

“Having just experienced the joys myself of a dry state in Kuwait, I was also interested to learn that in Bahrain, Wednesday night is when things go wild. That’s because many Saudis drive across the causeway connecting the two countries to escape their countries’ alcohol ban.” — Ward

“After touching down at the Al Asyl Landing Zone, our caravan wends down a straight but hilly road thru desert, a few camels on the right, another incomg helo about to land. Tufts of grass among the sand. A group of four horses further along on the other side. Vast areas of nothing and noone except three riders on horseback along other side of fence-fences lining parts of roadway. The road changes from paved and becomes all wet sand. Rain is now dripping all over the van windshield, yet there is a hazy backlight illuminating the clouds.” — Jane Aaron, Chicago Jewish News

“The Crown Prince shows POTUS aprx six falcons which are perched on stands about a foot off the ground in the left center area. The Crown Prince picks one up and pets it and POTUS also admires and strokes the bird. The men spend time enjoying the creatures and then turn to a small tent perpindicular to the first one.” — Aaron

This Week In Pool Reports

Ummm… does Martin Sieff have a crush on Condi, or is it just us?

“President Bush and Salvadoran President Antonio Saca wore dark suits andblue ties as they made statements to the press pool in the Oval Office, although they took no questions. Mr. Bush, who also wore black cowboy boots, glanced occasionally at some Sharpie scrawlings on the back of a white cardon an end table. He seemed in high spirits. The fireplace behind the two leaders was festooned with pine roping, gold ornaments and pine cones the size of footballs. Elsewhere in the Oval, a Christmas tree was decorated with elaborately frosted cookies shaped like squirrels, bears and moose. In the shadow of the tree sat Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Press Secretary Dana Perino stood behind the president’s desk.” — Bill Sammon, Washington Examiner

“A radiant and beaming secretary of State Condoleezza Rice hosted the dinner, attended by a galaxy of Middle East diplomats, notables, and American experts.” — Martin Sieff, UPI

“Dana Perino took time away from her turkey to brief a few lucky poolersabout President Bush’s Thanksgiving plans. The President telephoned 12 U.S. servicemen and women from Camp David towish ‘happy thanks’ to them and their families, Perino said, telling them ‘how proud he is of them.’ She said he asked for God’s blessing on the
members of the military he called. Bush is spending the holiday with the First Lady, Barbara and Jenna, who celebrated a birthday this weekend, and Sec. Rice, plus Henry Hager and members of his family. ‘It’s a great sacrifice to be away from your children and if it wasn’t anoble cause he would not ask them to do it,’ she said. ‘He knows that it’s
tough work but it’s necessary work and he is proud of them.’ She said Bush told them: ‘When you tell your parents you’ve been talkingwith the president, half of them will think you’re fibbing, but you can tell them its true.’” — Geoff Earle, New York Post

“The motorcade snaked along Main Street, past gawkers and a furniture store with a sign out front that said, ‘Welcome President Bush — 10% Off Sale Today.’ Alas, bargain-hunter that he is, POTUS did not stop to peruse the credenzas.” — Peter Baker, The Washington Post

This Week In Pool Reports

Some leftover Aussie details, POTUS makes a new friend and say cheese!

“POTUS and the other leaders emerged from the Sydney Opera House at about 1:15 p.m. in brown Drizabone (it’s a trade name — www.drizabone.com.au) coats, just above the knee, with different colored collars: pink, blue, green and yellow. POTUS had blue. The coats had APEC Austalia 2007, with the APEC star logo embroidered on the left side, near the lapel.” — Sheryl Stolberg, New York Times

“After a bit more rustling, a voice from the back of the press corps, which numbered about 200: ‘Okay, Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Matt, the house photographer. Let’s see a big smile.’ At which point POTUS smiled, but not a hearty smile, more a forced one. Someone shouted out and asked the leaders to wave, and they all did — all using their right hands, excpet for POTUS, who used his left. It was kind of a lame wave, about halfway up his body. One leader wore a matching hat: Stephen Harper of Canada. POTUS apparently knew better.” — Stolberg

“Just a photo op. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was already in the room admiring the view with Australian PM John Howard when POTUS arrived. Howard let out a robust, ‘Morning, George,’ to which Bush replied, ‘How are you?’ Howard then asked, ‘Did you sleep well?’ but your pool could not hear the president reply.” — Maura Reynolds, Los Angeles Times

“The rooftop executive lounge had a stunning view of Sydney harbor, with the bridge to the left and a more or less top-down view of the roof of the Opera House. A table was set up in the glassed-in corner with fruit plates already laid. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab entered after Bush to accompany him at the breakfast.” — Reynolds

“It took a South Korean president to make POTUS and Putin look best friends again. Lots of warm words, jokes and consensual language in brief press remarks after their meeting. POTUS looked relieved.” — Andrew Ward, The Financial Times

“Condoleezza Rice was caught in the press scrum leaving the room, commenting to no-one in particular that she was hurrying to catch a ride. But she was stopped in her tracks by Putin, who was lingering outside the room. ‘Condi! Condi!’ he called after her as she strode away. Rice turned back and the pair embraced warmly before going their separate ways.” — Ward

“US officials in the meeting: Rice, Jeffrey, Schwab, Price, Perino. Short, uneventful motorcades to and from the Marriot. We now have a lid, with POTUS back at the InterCon.” — Ward

This Week In Pool Reports

Tourists complicate a presidential car ride, POTUS speaks out on Libby, FLOTUS looks “hip” and Maine experiences a Russian invasion.

“POTUS’s little pre-4th afternoon jaunt to Beltsville was significantly complicated by holiday beachgoers and — we were told — a traffic accident. The trip to Beltsville ended up taking about an hour and 10 minutes, compared to 30-35 minutes on typical weekends. It was literally a crawl for the first half hour or so. For the return trip police held traffic off the parkway at least momentarily, significantly speeding our progress.” — John D. McKinnon, Wall Street Journal

“He took two questions, both on Libby. In response to the first, he declined to rule out a complete pardon for Libby at a later time. ‘As to the future I rule nothing in and nothing out,’ he said. But he also reiterated that he thought Libby’s non-prison punishments should stand. He described the commutation of prison sentence as a ‘very difficult decision.’ He reiterated that Libby’s punishment was ‘severe.’ He said he took into consideration Libby’s background and service to his country.” — McKinnon

“Fresh from his face-to-face with leader-for-life Hugo Chavez — in which the Russian president nodded grinningly as the Venezuelan president told him ‘the empire must understand that it cannot dominate the world’ — Vladimir Putin today came to the empire to visit its soon-to-depart, lame-duck president at dad’s place. And the former KGB man with the see-through soul was all smiles, presenting bouquets of flowers to first lady Laura Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush, double kissing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and heading out (without your pool) for a boat ride with the Most Powerful Man in the World — and his dad.” — Joseph Curl, Washington Times

“As the pool milled about near the flag pole (whipping in the wind, four flags: U.S., presidential seal, Texas, Maine), Barbara appeared at the door of the main residence, stepping out to chat with a few people gathered at the circular driveway, including Deputy Chief of Staff Joe Hagin. At about 5:30, Rice and FLOTUS came out another door, walked down a driveway, and
posed for pictures with Barbara (Hagin the shooter). FLOTUS was wearing a quite hip Hoodie, Condi, an orange sweater and white slacks.” — Curl

“Last: The little squire of Kennebunkport has gone Cyrillic — everywhere, signs are written in Russian (including the Clam Shack, with it’s 1-lb. ‘cahabny 43 onapa’ (lobster 43 roll) at $15.50 — a bargain for Russians with phonies Franklins). Stuck in the roll: A U.S. and Russian flag on toothpicks. On Saturday, a trio of Russian press poolers (wearing their official badges) shot everything — a pair of black bikers parked by Dock Square (‘Look, Boris, black people! In Maine!); the village’s lone horse-and-buggy carriage (‘Well, the last superpower is still horse-powered, hmm?’) and even took a picture of your pooler eating a cahabny roll, which
he expects landed well in the motherland.” — Curl

“As the press walked out, the pool passed a sign that said: ‘CAUTION: PRESIDENT ON SEGWAY — SLOW DOWN.’” — Curl

Morning Reading List, 05.17.07

Good morning Washington.

In your opinion, the Fox debate had much better format and questions than the MSNBC/Politico debate.

TNR opines that Rupert Murdoch’s “intention to purchase a crown jewel of U.S. journalism, The Wall Street Journal … should be a pivotal moment for liberals — a time to dial back their relentless hostility to newspapers and start crusading for them.”

From a reader, “Re: the poll. Fox sent a message last night with the debate — Dems, listen up — we are fair and will ask more interesting questions. We won’t just go down the line, we will actually tailor each question to each candidate, and oh by the way we will ask followups. This from a CNN viewer who usually think Fox sucks. I was at the Dem MSNBC debate and that one was much better than the GOP one in Ca. Food for thought.”

Tom Glocer writes “the most important letter I have ever written as chief executive of Reuters.”

Variety reports, Calendar editor Lennie LaGuire is “one of those who is leaving the Los Angeles Times as part of a corporate cost-cutting move to eliminate 100-150 jobs at the paper.”

Gilbert Cranberg notes that with newspapers moving full speed ahead online, print readers, including him, “not only do we miss out on what’s put online, we’re shortchanged on what’s in print.”

Public Eye’s Matthew Feeling reports, “truth is that the ‘Daily Show’ is actually just a nice dessert or digestif, after a meal of Real News Roughage.”

A ton of you agree with Christopher Hitchens and some readers weighed in:

“I agree with the Hitch — with this caveat. I may be getting old, but I find the practice of public grave dancing unbelieveably distasteful. Yes, it’s news, and yes, it’s valid to judge someone on their merits. But what’s with the glee to piss on the body before it’s even cold?”

“It is a shame how it only took 12 hours for Hitchens to dance on the grave of Jerry Falwell in an effort to sell more books.”

Bloomberg reports, “James Ottaway Jr., whose family controls 5.2 percent of the voting rights at Dow Jones & Co., predicted the company won’t be sold to Rupert Murdoch.”

New York Observer reports, “At Forbes.com, the online arm of the 90-year-old Steve Forbes — run publication — which now famously includes rock star Bono as an investor — nine editorial staffers have recently fled, according to a former staffer.” One staffer, Lisa Lerer joined Politico earlier this week.

“Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of NBC Universal parent General Electric, reiterated Tuesday that he has no current plans to sell the entertainment unit and also said GE has no interest in acquiring Dow Jones & Co.,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

AMNY reports, “XM announced Tuesday that it has suspended Long Island shock jocks Gregg ‘Opie’ Hughes and Anthony Cumia and ceased broadcast of their show for 30 days, effective immediately. The duo had issued an apology last week after airing a segment in which a guest expressed desire to have sex with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as well as First Lady Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.”

Reuters reports, “Time Warner Inc.’s AOL Internet unit said on Wednesday it purchased a controlling stake in Adtech AG, a German online advertising management company, to expand the volume of ads it delivers to big Web sites in Europe.”
