Jonathan Allen: Superstar and Founding Father

Washington D.C. is aglow in Jonathan Allen, ex-Politico writer turned aide to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), who appeared happy as usual last night at the Capitol Lounge for The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza‘s trivia night.

Members of the media and Capitol Hill aides were spotted swarming the new aide, who was chatting with the likes of GOP pundit Doug Heye, Politico‘s Dan Reilly, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) Spokesman Brad Dayspring, NRSC’s Ken Spain, Roll Call‘s Shira Toeplitz, WaPo‘s Paul Kane, and NRSC Spokesman Brian Walsh .

“He always seems happy,” said a Capitol Hill journalist who ran into Allen last night and chatted with him briefly.

Allen, who signed on to Politico for three months only, this week switched over to the other side of the tracks to work for Schultz.

“I think that he’s a great contribution to the team,” said Schultz’s spokesman Jonathan Beeton, already sounding the perfect spokesman for Allen and nearly casting him like a Founding Father.

“He’s obviously, you know, insightful and intelligent and has a great historical perspective on the institution. That was what the congresswoman was looking for. Jonathan Allen fits that to a T.”

Beeton said he had no concerns about Allen switching teams from the journalism to politics and neither does Schultz. “George Stephanopoulos is only one I successfully know of going the other way,” he added.

NEWSPAPERS

Is NYT keeping the Boston Globe after all?

The Ann Arbor News has printed its final edition.

TV

VF is torturing its intern with cable news.

Final numbers are in for Wednesday’s Obama news conference (via TVNewser). 24.68M Total Viewers watched on 11 networks. That’s down 14% percent from the 28.81 million who watched Obama’s last newser in April, off 39% from Obama’s second news conference in March, and down 50% from his first primetime newser in February

More numbers for you- there are now more TV sets than people in the US, according to a new Nielsen study.

Politico‘s executive editor Jim VandeHei, publisher Robert Allbritton, editor-in-chief John Harris and senior political correspondent Ben Smith made an appearance on Charlie Rose Tuesday (where was Mike Allen- it could have been a VF reunion).

Tonight, Charlie Gibson hosts a special edition of “20/20″ on ABC- “Over a Barrel: The Truth About Oil.”

Who’s watching Willie Geist‘s 5:30amET MSNBC show? “Drug dealers, hookers, drunks coming home from bars…” Nice.

ONLINE

WebNewser: AP added its name to the list of media companies aggressively seeking to protect their content. The AP board of directors Thursday tasked AP with creating a news registry that will tag and track all AP online content in order to ensure compliance with terms of use.

NEW NOTES

Eekk… NRO asks “Is Nico Pitney Huffington Post’s Jayson Blair?”

WEST WING REPORTAGE

What was the headline from President Obama’s Wednesday prime-time presser? Probably Obama’s answer to the Chicago Sun-TimesLynn Sweet‘s question on the arrest of Harvard Prof. Henry Louis Gates.

Jon Stewart had a field day with President Obama’s pitching skills on the Daily Show. Now Major League Baseball has pulled the video, which it owns, so it can’t be seen in re-runs or online clips.

IN MEMORIAM

AP: Walter Cronkite was remembered as a great journalist, sailor, friend and father during services yesterday. “I just feel so terrible about Walter’s death that I can hardly say anything,” said longtime CBS newsman and 60 Minutes commentator Andy Rooney.

NYT: Walter Cronkite told his children from time to time that he was “just” a reporter, one who had “just ended up reporting bigger and bigger stories.”

And Howard Kurtz‘s write-up (who we noted yesterday was there with a notepad) of the funeral at WaPo.

Birthday Shenanigans

Politico‘s Anne Schroeder Mullins celebrated her birthday with style, grace and a few chums of note last night. Husband Luke Mullins, Paul Kane, Michael Steel, Antonia Ferrier, Jack Deschauer, Brent Colburn, Brody Mullins, Lauren Mullins, Doug Heye, Carrie Foster, Scott Mulhauser, Sam Dealey, Katie Lindsey, Patrick O’Connor, Ron Bonjean, Sara Bonjean, Julie Bosman, Dan Reilly, Tim Wolfmeyer and Liz Wolgemuth commandeered the patio of a downtown watering hole to toast Ms. Shenanigans.

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten would have been there, but he had a prior engagement. However, he did send a copy of his new book with a birthday inscription over as gift for notable foodie Schroeder-Mullins. This was Anne’s second annual 29th birthday.

Speaking of birthdays… today is Media Future Now founder Andy Mirsky‘s birthday and WaPo‘s Paul Kane will celebrate his 30-something-ith birthday tomorrow.

Marquardt Joins ABC, Jets Off To Moscow

Alexander Marquardt joins ABC from CNN today as a digital reporter based in Moscow. He’ll be reporting on all ABC News platforms, including “World News,” “Nightline,” and “Good Morning America.” At CNN, Marquardt was an embed reporter covering the Obama, Clinton and Biden campaigns, and before that, he was an anchor and correspondent at Channel One News.

Appropriately enough, Marquardt’s friends and colleagues gathered at Russia House this weekend to bid him “dasvidaniya!” Erin McPike, Mike Memoli, Sunlen Miller, Carrie Dann, Mark Murray, Jeff Zeleny, Bonnie Kapp, Matt Jaffe, Dan Reilly and Meg Reilly were among those who came out for some vodka shots in Marquardt’s honor.

Hacks & Flaks Happy Hour

Last night at Union Pub, hacks and flaks gathered for some drinks and basketball (and tips and info sharing, of course).

And who was there? Sasha Issenberg, Erin McPike and Meredith Stencil, Jessica Brady and Elizabeth Brotherton.

From the Hill (the poor journos were greatly outnumbered): Scott Mulhauser from Lautenberg’s office, Joe Shoemaker, Max Gleischman and Christina Mulka from Durbin’s office, Mike Spahn from Murray’s, Alex Reese from Shaheen’s, Cassie Harvey from Mikulski’s, Jennifer Kohl from Rep. Elijah Cummings’s, NRDC’s Erin Allweiss, Jamie Smith from Rockefeller’s office, Jena Longo with Commerce Committee, Rachel Racusen with the House Ed. Committee, Alexis Marks from Matsui’s office, SEUI’s Mark McCullough, Adrianne Marsh from McCaskill’s, Doug Thornell from Van Hollen’s and former Politico Dan Reilly, now from Markey’s office.
